英語の世紀に入ったとは何を意味するのか。

それは、〈国語〉というものが出現する以前、地球のあちこちを覆っていた、〈普遍語/現地語〉という言葉の二重構造が、ふたたび蘇ってきたのを意味する。近年、伝達手段の発達によって地球はいよいよ小さくなり、それにつれて英語という今回の〈普遍語〉は、その小さくなった地球全体を覆う大規模のものとなりつつあった。そこへ、ほかならぬ、インターネットという技術が最後の仕上げをするように追いうちをかけたのである。
Translation - English
What does it mean to say that we have entered the English century?

It means that we are returning to the old structure of “universal language / regional language” which previously existed in different parts of the globe, in the time prior to the emergence of “national languages.” Recently the world has become smaller and smaller, and alongside this development the “universal language” that is English has grown to the scale that it can now cover the whole of the shrunken earth. Here, it is the technology of the internet which has been the like final nail.

これには色々な理由があろう。しかしその一つが日本の学者の多くは自分の国の言葉を愛しないというところにあるのは確かなように見える。言葉を愛することを知らない者に好い文章の書ける筈がない。悪文、拙文は我々の間では学者にとって当然なことであると思われている。あの人は学者にしては文章がうまい。などと平気で語られているのである。然るに若し言葉と思想とが離すことのできぬ内面的関係をもっているとすれば、このような事実は、少なくとも一面に於いては我が国の学者に自分自身の思想を求め、形作ろうとする衝動と熱意とが欠けているということの証左でなければならぬ。ひとは自分自身の思想を求め、形作るとき、自分自身の言葉を求め、形作る。
Translation - English
There are probably various reasons for this state of affairs. Yet one of them certainly appears to be that many Japanese scholars do not love the language of their own country. Someone who does not love [their own] language can hardly be expected to write good prose. Among us there is an understanding that it is natural for scholars to write poorly. People will casually remark, for example, that a ‘person is good at writing for a scholar.’ And yet, if it is the case that language and thought have an inseparable, internal relationship, then a state of affairs such as this must be evidence that, in some aspects at least, the scholars of our nation are lacking the drive and enthusiasm for pursuing, and giving shape to, their own thought. When somebody seeks to [develop] their own thinking, and give it shape, they also seek to [develop] their own words, and give them shape.

真理のための真理といふは真に安んじ美を楽しむといふ意味であるが、我々は何でも多く知るほど価値を増すと考へ、或は人生を益する害するなどと顧慮するは、真理の知恵を方便視する俗見であると考へるのではない。真理自身は有益でも有害でもない、ただ真理である。実學とも謂ふべき東洋の學は、人生の実地から、人生を全くするに益すべき真理の知識を得ようとするものである。そこで教といふものが立てられるのである。教に対してこれを學び習ふといふことがすなわち學である。真理は無限の大海の如くであるとニュートンは言った。これを究め盡すことは出来ず、またその必要はない。ただこの大海に如何様に航出して、如何様に航海して、目指す所の岸に到達して、この人生を全くするかの問題がある。
Translation - English
Truth for the sake of truth means to be content with the merely ‘correct’, enjoying its beauty. We, however, do not think that it is valuable to know as much as possible about anything at all. Nor do we think that considering what is beneficial or harmful to human life is to treat insight into truth in a vulgar, expedient manner. Truth itself is neither beneficial nor harmful. It is merely what is true. Eastern learning, which we may also refer to as real learning, is oriented towards the practical living of human life, and the seeking of knowledge which may help us accomplish our lives. This is why we set up a ‘teaching’. To learn-and-receive-instruction from ‘teaching’ is precisely what constitutes ‘learning’. Newton once compared the truth to a great ocean. It is impossible to conquer such an ocean. Nor is it necessary. There is only the problem of how we are to set sail upon it, how we are to voyage across it, and how we are to arrive safely at our chosen shore, thereby accomplishing our lives.

Bio

I am a Japanese to English translator who specializes in the humanities and social sciences.

I have previously lived in Japan for over six years, where I completed a master’s degree at Kyoto University’s school of letters. My specialty is the history of Japanese philosophy, a subject which I continue to engage with academically.

At the current moment I am primarily employed as a freelance translator in Australia. As a native English speaker who has studied in the humanities at a Japanese graduate school, I am quite uniquely situated when it comes to understanding some of the nuance behind even quite obscure philosophical concepts. I am committed to ensuring that my client’s work is faithfully rendered into professional, clear English of an academic standard.

I am also comfortable translating for gaming and animation companies, with over a years experience as an in-house translator and interpretor at an animation company in Tokyo.
