Source text - English
Translation - Arabic
When the soldiers leave,
I'll come out to buy you a few millimeters of air
I'll try - if I could - to sing you to sleep
You are not my daughter, I know
But I can be your father
except, the soldiers prevent it.

When the soldiers leave,
Do not mind all those burnt trees
All those burnt lifetimes
All those burnt wishes
Lean on my shoulder
And try, with your only foot
To walk the twenty steps
Between home and the candy vendor.

When the soldiers leave,
Tell me what fear stopped you from saying
Show your warm tears, coloured with a bit of eyeliner
No one will blame you
They all, before coming to ensure you’re alive,
Cried a little, and then held back.

When the soldiers leave,
Do not change how you see things
The picture with bullet holes
Is still the same picture
The mirror broken by a rifle butt
Is the one you checked your hair braids in,
And annoyed me while I waited
To get you to school
And your little fat cat
-The one who is dead now
After a soldier kicked it with his military shoe-
Is the same cat
All that is there, sweetie,
Is that soldiers were here.

When the soldiers leave,
We will laugh at the soldiers who fell asleep
And shot the fridge
After the commander yelled at him to wake up
Soldiers are human, like us
The only difference
Is that we carry disaster on our shoulders
And they carry guns in their eyes
And Torah in their souls.

When the soldiers leave,
Do not mess with the stories they left
They know that they only know what they’ve been taught
That bag that fell from the last soldier’s pocket
Is not necessarily a bag of sweets
Soldiers often drop
Bags of military con
And jubilate when the trick
Fools the peaceful

When the soldiers leave,
You and I will stand
And laugh and laugh
At the mistakes in the letters they wrote
Because they don’t know our language
Who taught it to them
Does not know it, either.
