Nakahara Chuuya figures that a lot of things will change. That seasons may pass but they're never quite the same. Returning to find that he might have grown older but so often that he's not all the wiser.
In tandem he sometimes thinks of himself like stone, whereupon scathing history leaves its mark before it's gone. Yet, he finds no sign burnt or trace left behind; splinters of excruciating nothingness at his side.
Hurt more than insult to injury did.
And he used to think he meant to say he wanted a war. But he has come to learn that one can't wage a war alone. The shadow of an echo for all the things that went, and could it be that nothing ever mattered at all in the end?
At age twenty two, as he stands across Dazai, he comes to find that for so many things that change, as many stay the same. And he's still unable to hold his gaze while agonizing to breathe – because it feels like void and tastes like emptiness.
And with all thoughts of war and destruction gone, and the charred remains of bridges, that were only ever half built, in his hands, he knows helplessness.
Because he finds that it still tastes bitter, yet he can no longer feel the sharp pang of separation burning on his tongue. The unsettling paperweight in the pit of his stomach replaced by the familiar vagueness of time gone that will not return.
Frozen, with nothing left to give.
He asks himself what if they were to lie together one night and sleep, heedless pride and nothingness given away to peaceful slumber. He asks himself, would that make it so that he is in any way closer?
And when the answer is no, he turns his back because the machine that is called heart has no future, and his mind is already betraying him. Unable to recall how things have changed. Yet knowing them to be in that manner all the same.
Nakahara Chuuya figures that he will never quite forgive that man. But this, he can learn to live with. Years will pass and they will never come to amount to anything. Growing older with time passing but being none the wiser.
The weight of presence turned regret.
Πόλεμο ήθελε, αυτό σκεφτόταν πως τα λόγια του σήμαιναν. Μα το μάθημα είναι πως μόνος σου πόλεμο δεν μπορείς να κάνεις. Η σκιά μιας ηχούς για όλα αυτά που φύγαν, μα ποιο μπορεί, ποιο τελικά, να ‘ταν το νόημα που είχαν;
Κι αναρωτιέται πώς θα ‘ταν να ξάπλωναν μαζί ένα βράδυ και να κοιμόνταν, κι ο ήρεμος ύπνος να έδιωχνε την απρόσεχτη περηφάνεια και το κενό. Κι αναρωτιέται, μήπως αυτό να τον έφερνε πιο κοντά του;

Source text - English Words. Always so many, but so little. A perversion of expression, chopped, mutilated, then neatly lined. As if a couple dozen syllables put in a row can ever explain anything. Think about it, at the end of the day if that statement were not true, would words lose their meaning if you repeated them enough times? It cannot be, it doesn't add up, and yet, when he tries to do the same, at his hour of need, with his whole being rejecting reality, the same words refuse to shed their meaningful existence in order to sink back to the void from where they came.
The cigarette burns his fingertips, staining them black with soot. He drops it, startled out of his reverie and unwittingly he finds himself glancing at the clock still counting minutes across the room. He could fling something at it, because time is a flat circle and it doesn't mean much, same as anything man has invented to make sense of the world, but he doesn't. Because doing so will accomplish nothing.
Not everything is, or should be, defined. In the last two years he's changed apartments thrice. Always standing on doorways with larger than life smiles, big, blue eyes in which a pallid light still dances like the rays of the sun filtering through leaves; a faded echo of a promise dreamt long ago. (Make sure to close the door before your shoulders slump.)
He dyes a rainbow colored scarf only to give it away. The clouds over Tokyo are really quite bleary after all. There is no one to know his story; he is friendly to everyone, but friends with no one, after all. Well liked, and easy to lend an ear, to lend an opinion, lend a hand, lend some salt, lend some company, lend his bed. And he comes from nowhere and stays somewhere, until he doesn't. His commitments are to higher powers.
It's hard to keep the colorful autumn crowd at Shibuya from spinning tales about him. Spin them like a spider spins its silk, or how the leaves spin with the wind, brown and crinkly when you step on them, (or fiery red like the sunset on the branches).
"Hey, you wanna die?" an outstretched hand, on a cold, rainy morning of March. And something, a strange, fleeting, sneaky something, the likes of which take pleasure in dancing just on the edge of your peripheral vision, just out of sight.
"Maybe," he replies. He meant to add something but he's not sure what. A head tilted on one side with feigned innocence, notes stained with red, words stale, acted out a thousand times before and a dreary weariness, sat like a demon at the place where his shoulders dip, tiredly.
He was smiling when the heart that wasn't his own stopped beating; offering a present, giftwrapped neatly and shining in its golden foil.
It is as easy to give these gifts as it is to receive them. And once indoctrinated in these ways it is simple to figure out how simple minded most of humanity is; how easy it is to deceive, how easy to bribe. Yet another way in which words are a horrible perversion, they carry meaning even if its not the meaning intended. This is how lies are born. And him? He's the most beautiful lie of all.
