7 Secrets of Shiva
Author’s Note On Context and Structure
Imagine a Western scholar. He, or she, is typically from Europe or America. All his life, he has been exposed to Judaism, Christianity or Islam, religions that frown upon any overt display of sexuality. To him, sexuality is almost always an act of rebellion, an expression of defiance against the establishment. It is seen as being modern.
So imagine his surprise when he comes to India and encounters temples embellished with images of men and women in erotic embrace. Imagine his bewilderment when he finds Hindus worshipping an image shaped like a phallus called Shiva-linga. This is what his ancestors, a hundred years ago, also encountered, and condemned as pre-modern, licentious and savage. The scholar finds them vicariously liberating. Keen to study and understand these images, he hunts for a suitable academy. He finds none in India. So he enrols in a Western institution, where he is guided by Western academicians and is expected to follow methodologies developed and approved in the West. He starts reading texts as he would read the Bible, not realising that texts do not serve the same purpose in Hinduism. He decodes scriptures and images using his own cultural frameworks as the template. His conclusions are published in respected academic papers that win him accolades from Western academia, but they discomfort, even horrify, the average Hindu devotee.
Most Hindus become defensive and, like their 19th-century ancestors, go out of their way to strip Hinduism of its sexual heritage. A few, especially those with political leanings, react violently, outraged by the conclusions. Accused of cultural insensitivity, Western scholars strike back saying that Hindus do not know their own heritage and are still viewing Hinduism through the archaic Victorian lens. Battle lines are drawn. They are still drawn. Who is right, the arrogant academician or the stubborn devotee? It is in this context that I write this book.
I have noticed that the divide between Western academicians and Hindu devotees exists in their relative attention to form and thought. Form is tangible and objective, thought is intangible and subjective. Western scholars have been spellbound by the sexual form but pay scant regard to the metaphysical thought. In other words, they prefer the literal to the symbolic. Hindu devotees, in contrast, are so focused on the metaphysical thought that they ignore, or simply deny, the sexual form. The Western preference for form over thought stems from their cultural preference for the objective over the subjective. Hindus, on the other hand, are very comfortable with the subjective, hence can easily overlook form and focus on thought. This book seeks to bridge this wide gap between academics and practice.
• The first chapter looks at the meaning of the Shiva-linga beyond the conventional titillation offered by a phallic symbol
• The second chapter focuses on Shiva’s violent disdain for territorial behaviour amongst humans
• The third and fourth chapters deal with how the Goddess gets Shiva to engage with the world out of compassion
• The next two chapters revolve around Shiva’s two sons, Ganesha and Murugan, through whom he connects with the world
• The final chapter presents Shiva as the wise teacher who expresses wisdom through dance

Уявіть собі західного науковця-гуманітарія. Імовірно, він (або вона) походить із Європи або США. Все своє життя ця людина перебувала під впливом іудаїзму, християнства або ісламу — релігій, які вельми несхвально ставляться до будь-яких публічних проявів сексуальності. Для такого науковця сексуальність майже завжди дорівнює заколоту. Це відкритий виклик істеблішменту як вияв його сучасності.
А тепер уявіть здивування такої людини, коли вона приїздить до Індії і бачить храми, вкриті барельєфами із зображенням еротичних ігор між чоловіками та жінками. Уявіть собі його розгубленість, коли він дізнається, що індуїсти вклоняються об’єктам, які мають форму фалоса, — так званими шива-лінгамами. Це ті самі культурні реалії, з якими стикався і його предок років сто тому — і суворо засуджував, вважаючи їх варварськими, розпусними, дикими. Проте наш сучасний дослідник думає, що вони несуть людям благо і визволення. Воліючи їх дослідити і зрозуміти, він шукає відповідну спільноту науковців. Але саме в Індії не знаходить жодної. Тоді він приєднується до якоїсь західної групи вчених, де навчається у західних авторитетів, які очікують, що він спиратиметься на методологічні засади, що були сформовані і схвалені на Заході. Він починає читати індуські писання так само, як він досліджував би Біблію, не усвідомлюючи, що в індуїзмі тексти переслідують геть інші цілі. Він розшифровує сюжети й образи, спираючись на свою власну культурну систему координат, а далі публікує свої висновки в поважних академічних виданнях, отримуючи схвальні відгуки в західних академічних колах. Однак пересічного реального послідовника індуїзму ці ж його праці засмучують, ба навіть обурюють.
Більшість індуїстів займають оборонну позицію і, так само, як їхні предки з XIX сторіччя, намагаються відмежувати індуїзм від його ж сексуальної спадщини. Є також нечисельна група індійців — це здебільшого політично активні особи, — які реагують максимально жорстко і вголос обурюються висновками іноземних дослідників. Стикаючись зі звинуваченнями в культурній обмеженості, західні вчені огризаються: мовляв, індуси самі не знають власної спадщини і досі сприймають індуїзм через архаїчні окуляри вікторіанської епохи. Лінію фронту визначено, шанці споруджено. Ця битва триває і досі. Тож хто тут правий — пихаті науковці, чи то вперті віряни? От саме в такому культурному контексті я і взявся за написання цієї книги.
Я помітив, що межа, яка відокремлює західних вчених від індуських вірян полягає в тому, що вони принципово різну увагу приділяють формі й думці. Форма є відчутною й об’єктивною, думка — невідчутною й суб’єктивною. Західних дослідників зачаровують сексуальні форми, і через це вони майже не звертають уваги на метафізичну думку. Інакше кажучи, вони віддають перевагу буквальному змісту над символічним. Індуські віряни, навпаки, настільки зосереджені на метафізичній думці, що ігнорують, ба навіть просто заперечують сексуальні форми. Західна схильність віддавати перевагу формі над думкою походить від культурної орієнтації радше на об’єктивні явища, ніж на суб’єктивні. Індуси, з іншого боку, дуже комфортно почувають себе в суб’єктивному світі і через це дуже легко нехтують формою, зосереджуючись на думці. Я ж в своїй книжці намагаюся збудувати моста над цією прірвою між науковцями і вірянами.
• Перша глава присвячена значенню шива-лінгама за межами звичного вузького трактування цього об’єкту як «фалічного символу».
• Друга глава розповість про категоричне несприйняття Шивою будь-яких територіальних претензій, які притаманні людям.
• В третій і четвертій главах я розповім про те, яким чином Богиня спромоглася залучити Шиву до активної участі в житті світу, пробудивши в ньому співчуття.
• Наступні дві глави присвячені двом синам Шиви — Ганеші та Муругану, через посередництво яких він підтримує зв’язки зі світом.
• Остання глава розповість про Шиву як мудрого вчителя, який виражає глибоку мудрість через танок.
В цій книжці я намагаюся наочно представити читачеві деякі моделі, які у прихованому вигляді присутні в міфічних історіях, символах та ритуалах, присвячених Шиві. При цьому я щиро вірю в те, що
