Population and Immigration
Introduction
Immigration is one of the three factors that are responsible for population change in a society, these factors are fertility, mortality, and migration. Although, migration differs from the other two elements in several aspects, including:
Firstly, data collection for fertility and death is easier to collect and measure accurately. On the contrary, migration is difficult to measure with the same degree of accuracy because the flow of migrants is not stable over time. Therefore, there is less information on migration when compared to fertility and mortality.
Secondly, it is common that immigration is subject to strong government controls comparing to fertility and mortality. Finally, migration is one of the population phenomena that can change the population structure of any society very quickly comparing to the effects of both fertility and mortality on the population structure.
Immigration is one of the population issues that has been subjected to a great deal of study. Usually, migration analyses focus on movement from underdeveloped countries to developed countries, or within the country's borders (internal migration).
The concept of migration
Migration means the movement of individuals from one region to another. If this movement within the borders of the country it is called internal migration. The other movement is outside the borders of the country and it is called external migration. These types of immigration can take place legally, or it can occur illegally such as claiming entry into the intended country for the purpose of visiting then remaining within the country with the intention to work.
Internal migration occurs primarily from areas where there is low demand for work to areas with employment opportunities, or where there are better opportunities for living. Therefore, the predominant pattern of internal migration is from rural areas to cities. furthermore, it is noted that the motive for internal migration is primarily economic.
Regarding external migration, the motives are either economic or political. Examples include cases of refugees, fugitives, and those chased by the government of their home country.
The motivation may also be educational, through the individual seeking better educational opportunities or prospects to conduct research that are better than those available to them in their home country. The migration of this last kind is often called the " Skilled Migration “.
Immigration takes place temporarily when the migrant intends to reside in the destination country for a fixed period and then return to their homeland. Alternatively, migration is permanent when the migrant does not intend to return to their country of origin.
The categories of migration patterns differ in their benefit to the mother country. As previously mentioned, temporary immigration is mainly driven by economic motives, therefore migrants will return home with their savings resulting in economic benefits for their country of origin.
It is often the migrant acquires experiences as a result of residing in the host country, and these experiences add to the balance of experience available in the home country when the migrant returns. Therefore, temporary migration results in the flow of benefits from the host country to the home country.
In the case of permanent external migration, they are often on a selective basis, that is, the host countries are vetting who they will grant the right to permanent residence. Therefore, most of those who migrate through this method are highly skilled and educated. Based on their permanent residence abroad, unlike the temporary immigrant, they do not transfer their savings to the home country, but rather keep these funds at the host country. For this reason, the flow of benefits from permanent immigration is from the home country to the host country.
In this case, the mother country experiences significant deficits, as the country completely loses its human capital that is represented by scientific and technical competencies.
From a statistics perspective, there is great difficulty in defining the meaning of the migrant.
Consequently, demographers have agreed that the migrant is the person who has been continuously residing in another country. This also includes those who upon entering the border announce their intention to stay more than a year.

Asian shares resume descent, oil prices up on Saudi tensions
Hideyuki Sano
TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares slipped on Monday as worries over Sino-U.S. trade disputes, a possible slowdown in the Chinese economy and higher U.S. borrowing costs tempered optimism despite a rebound in global equities late last week.
Not helping the mood, oil prices jumped and Saudi Arabian shares tumbled on rising diplomatic tensions between Riyadh and the West after the monarchy warned against threats to punish it over disappearance of a journalist critical of its policies.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS fell 0.8 percent while Shanghai shares .SSEC were down 0.4 percent in early trade.
Japan's Nikkei .N225 dropped 1.4 percent, with carmaker shares .ITEQP.T hitting 13-month lows after Washington said it would seek a provision about currency manipulation in future trade deals with Japan.
MSCI’s broadest gauge of the world’s stock markets. MIWD00000PUS was off 0.2 percent after a sizable 3.87 percent decline last week - its biggest since March - to a one-year nadir.
The market shakeout has been blamed on a series of factors, including worries about the impact of a U.S.-China trade war, a spike in U.S. bond yields this week and caution ahead of earnings season.
Although selling appeared to have abated on Friday, partly after Chinese trade data showed strong growth in September, many investors remained cautious.
“Some people say markets drew comfort from China’s exports data. But to me it seems so obvious the numbers were inflated by front-loading ahead of the introduction of tariffs,” said Norihiro Fujito, chief investment analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities.
Fujito said the trade war is starting to take a toll on growth in China, noting that data released later on Friday showed Chinese auto sales posted the biggest drop in seven years.

Master's degree - Western Sydney University
Experience
Years of experience: 4. Registered at ProZ.com: Apr 2019.
Academically, I hold a Master’s Degree in Statistical Science, specialising in Bio Statistical Science Analysis from Lebanese International University, Graduate Diploma in Management from Sydney University and a Graduate Certificate in Health Services from Box Hill Institute of Health in Melbourne.
Previously, I worked with the United Nations and the International Red Cross as a refugee support worker in Lebanon and Jordan. Also, worked at the Department of Nutrition (long stay patients) at Melbourne Hospital and St Vincent Hospital, Melbourne. I have also worked with several major medical and pharmaceutical companies in Australia while functioning as Coordinator and, currently, Part time Assistant Manager of International Logistic Services with Boston Scientific.
I am currently a student at the University of Western Sydney, undertaking my final year of studies.Upon completion of my course, I will receive my degree in Translation and Interpreting and will then be a NAATI accredited Interpreter / Translator. I specialise in English – Arabic and Arabic -English Languages.
So, why Translation ?
You may be surprised to hear that the reason is ‘the bad gene’, the one I inherited from my family which makes me a voracious reader, driven to discover the answer to every question that crosses my mind - by reading.
Born in Iraq, I lived in Kuwait for several years as my father worked there. With the Gulf War on the horizon, my family and I moved to Jordan and shortly afterwards we settled down in Lebanon. After less than two years graduating from the university, I moved to the United Arab Emirates for work and in 2008 to Australia. These experiences helped me to acquire a broader understanding of cultural differences, as well as understanding a range of accents and dialects including Iraqi, Lebanese, Jordanian, Kuwaiti, Emirati, local idioms and different ways of communicating.
My extensive experiences working in various jobs and my exposure to a myriad of cultures including Arabic and Western has greatly broadened my linguistic and cultural knowledge.
These experiences, together with my academic achievements, has exposed me to terminologies, abbreviations and idiomatic expressions, in several languages, pertaining to Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Biology, Medical equipment, Medicinal Substance (general) and Community Services.
Hold on, is that all that you need to be a good translator?
Indeed not. With confirmed knowledge of two languages Arabic and English and an absolute attention to detail, there is still more that elevates a great translator above the ordinary.
I strongly believe that a so-called ’good translation’ should have original or its own value as a work of art and so the translator becomes the author’s accomplice.
The extras I possess include an inquisitive mind which drives me to learn more, to search and to dig deeper, to dig out the origin of the words, discovering differences and similarities between languages and patterns. I analyse a client’s work to carefully comprehend (or interrogate) each word of the text. Also, I ask, who are the readers? What is the intended message? Is there some pragmatic but hidden meaning the author or client intends to send?
Without exaggeration, I go even further to request clarification from my clients on any ambiguity I may come across, so as to avoid making assumptions.
My translations are works of art and professionalism, and their secret lies in blood and sweat, not mere facility of language. It is this love, passion and professionalism that have driven me to creating my own brand in the translation industry, and I want my clients to always feel confident that their message is completely and carefully conveyed to their reader.
