Source text - English Two weeks ago, I recommended that you should be careful buying stocks nowadays because of correction and economic situations. You are probably sitting on your couch, wondering: “Am I missing an opportunity here while many of my friends are making thousands of dollars from the stock market? How can I make money while limiting myself to the downside exposure to the market?” There are a few ways, but these methods will definitely lower your potential returns even though they will give you more safeguard.
The first method is to avoid investing in major tech stocks, such as FAANG (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, and Google). These companies offer great products and services as well as continue to invent revolutionary technology that disrupts the market. As a result, the prices of these tech stocks have been skyrocketing. Netflix’s share price has more than doubled. Apple’s, Amazon’s, Google’s, and Facebook’s stocks have reached new high. Thus, the achievements of these companies have already been calculated into the share prices, and the share prices of these companies are probably overpriced. Besides, these companies will not be able to expand rapidly in a short-term. Apple just launched its revolutionary iPhone 10, and it will not reveal any new product until after June 2018. Netflix just flexed its muscles internationally; while it will get new customers abroad, it will face challenge from Disney and Hulu in the domestic market. Amazon and Google just broke a record after reaching over $1,000 per share in 2017. In short, there is a greater probability that these tech companies may face headwinds in their share price sooner or later.
The second way to secure your investment is to put your money in underappreciated companies that sell everyday products/ services. Kraft Heinz Company (NASDAQ: KHC) for example, falls under this category. Share price of KHC has not improved much compared to its competitors, such as Hershey. Despite internal efforts to increase efficiency, which results in lower production costs, shareholders and investors still undermine the earning potential of KHC due to the shift in consumer preferences. It is true that today’ consumers favor localized, organic products over processed food, but such preferences may not hold forever, especially if economic downturn/ slowdown takes place. People may choose to save money by purchasing processed food because processed food, in general, is cheaper than organic products produced by local farmers (mass production pushes the costs down). Mondelez International (NASDAQ:MDLZ) and AT&T (NYSE:T) are another examples. They are still underappreciated, and their products/ services are widely used. The potential downside for MDLZ and T are consumer preferences and lawsuit from the DOJ, respectively.
During economic peak time, it is better to put your investment at the safer end of the spectrum. Volatile investments such as tech stocks, cryptocurrencies, etc. are extremely susceptible to market panic during the economic downturn/ correction, which happens after the economy reaches its peak. Underappreciated companies that offer daily consumer products or services will not be affected as much as consumers will typically buy their products regardless of the economic cycle.
