The majority of these merchants were imprisoned by the Santo Ofício [literally ‘Holy Office; refers to the Inquisition courts] in the first half of the 17th century. Once free, the majority fled to France, Hamburg, Antwerp, Italy, and later Amsterdam. They were mostly Crypto-Jews, and it is clear from their Inquisition cases from Lisbon that their comercial network had given them contact with and knowledge of the Judaism practiced in Europe. They knew the dates of traditional celebrations, such as Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Passover; they knew prayers in Hebrew; they were all literate; they could all read and write in Latin and Portuguese, and some in Hebrew; they would perform Judaic fasting; they remained Kosher; and they would gather together to celebrate shabbat. They passed this knowledge on to the New Christians that lived in the colony, Brazil, where the memory and knowledge of Judaism was becoming more and more distant with each passing year.
This commercial contact through familial networks helped to maintain Judaism - or Crypto-Judaism - in Portugal and in the colony throughout the 17th century. We can find various examples of familial commercial networks like the Milão family mentioned above through which we can clearly trace the transmission of Judaism to Brazil.

Bio

As a language and writing enthusiast, I always made an effort to immerse myself in the world of foreign languages. Through my B.A. in Spanish and Portuguese, as well as the time I spent studying at the Universitat de Barcelona, I was constantly studying classic and contemporary literature, fully engaged with the academic traditions of each language. Academic study wasn't enough, however; I wanted real hands on experience, which was exactly what I got when I interned as a legal assistant in a Spanish-speaking law office. It was there that I was first exposed to translation as I prepared immigration documents and translated foreign documents. I later moved to Brazil to work full time for an educational consultancy. This firsthand office experience showed me how the languages are used in practice, especially in a business setting. As one of only two foreign employees working for a company doing business in several countries, I had ample chance to continue honing my translation craft for work. I also saw plenty of bad translations that lacked clarity and nuance, which, while frustrating, further demonstrated to me the importance of faithful translations.

After a year of living and working abroad, I decided to supplement my income by taking on additional translation work, primarily academic papers originally in Portuguese. Half a year later, I decided to make translation my full time profession.

As a strong writer with both academic and real world experience in Spanish and Portuguese, I understand the nuances and peculiarities of each language and can transform even difficult or idiomatic texts into beautifully-wrought, concise English. I hope you will consider reaching out to me about your next project!
