The UN held a discussion Friday in relation to a bill on national security which Beijing plans to impose in Hong Kong. Also, U.S. President Donald Trump held a press conference regarding the measures towards China that his administration will put in place. These two steps come in the context of mounting international pressure on Beijing about the controversial bill as Western countries accuse Chinese authorities of trying to restrict the freedoms of the island’s inhabitants.

Pressure on China intensified from the international community Friday over its desire to impose the Hong Kong national security bill. This pressure was evident during the press conference held with American President Donald Trump, in a statement from Western countries, as well as during the UN discussion regarding the file.

The United States, the UK, Canada, and Australia are leading the campaign against the bill which punishes "terrorist" separatist activities, the rebellion against state power, and international interference in the semi-autonomous Chinese territory. These countries consider the bill to be a masked approach to silencing the opposition in Hong Kong and to restrict freedoms. The Chinese authorities strongly deny any such thing.

These surveys could help explain why this advocacy group is receiving positive feedback from numerous candidates. Some no longer hesitate to pledge their support for the campaign. During the televised debate on September 9, 2019, Mehdi Jomaa, Abdelkarim Zbidi, and Said Aidi openly considered the decriminalization of cannabis and agreed to respond to questions from Hezb el Warka (In English: Rolling Paper Party)on the subject.

Thanks to polling institutes, these candidates know that such a public claim could help them gain a new segment of the electoral pool. Throughout the campaign period, pollsters are forbidden from releasing any survey results; nonetheless, requests for surveys continue to increase. Those who have the means do not hesitate to spend tens of thousands of dinars in order to better inform their communication strategies.

Bio

I provide reliable translations and subtitling from French or Arabic to English. I also edit texts written in or translated to English.

I began learning French as an adolescent who felt naturally drawn to the richness of French and Francophone culture. As a college student, I began to study Arabic as a personal challenge. I honed my linguistic skills while completing my master’s thesis by conducting extensive field research in Arabic and French to investigate state-sanctioned secularism in religious education curricula through the lens of the anthropology of religion.

I have spent extensive time living abroad and traveling throughout the Mediterranean, which has allowed me to use French and Arabic daily in both my personal and professional life. Before taking up translation full-time, I spent two years as a communications consultant in the international non-profit sector. I have experience translating in the following domains:

Journalism (televised interviews, interview transcripts, questionnaires, op-ed articles)
Academia (sociology, political science, anthropology, international relations)
Marketing communications (promotional videos, press releases, website content, product descriptions)
Art/Culture (music/song lyrics, artist bios, exhibition catalogues, comic book scripts, screenplays)
Business (general legal contracts, emails, Terms and Conditions)
General documentation (Birth certificates, CVs, marriage certificates)

I hold a BA in French with honors from Western Michigan University and an MA in Modern Middle Eastern and North African Studies from the University of Michigan. Between 2014-2016, I completed intensive language courses in France (Besançon), Jordan (Madaba), and Tunisia (Tunis)

_____________________________________________________________________

Journalisme (interviews télévisées, transcriptions d'interviews, questionnaires, articles d'opinion)
