A regeneration method which depends on the sprouting of cut trees. Most hardwoods, the coast redwood, and certain pines naturally sprout from stumps and can be managed through coppicing. Coppicing is generally used to produce fuelwood, pulpwood, and other products dependent on small trees. A close relative of coppicing is pollarding. Three systems of coppice woodland management are generally recognized: simple coppice, coppice with standards, and the coppice selection system.
Shelterwood
In general terms, the shelterwood system is a series of partial cuts that removes the trees of an existing stand over several years and eventually culminates in a final cut that creates a new even-aged stand. It is an even-aged regeneration method that removes trees in a series of three harvests: 1) Preparatory cut; 2) Establishment cut; and 3) Removal cut. The success of practising a shelterwood system is closely related to: 1. the length of the regeneration period, i.e. the time from the shelterwood cutting to the date when a new generation of trees has been established; 2.the quality of the new tree stand with respect to stand density and growth; and 3.the value increment of the shelter trees.
Seed viability
A fluorescein diacetate (FDA) biochemical viability test for several species of conifer seed, including white spruce, estimates the proportion of live seed (viability) in a seedlot, and hence the percentage germination of a seedlot. The accuracy of predicting percentage germination was within +/- 5 for most seedlots. White spruce seed can be tested for viability by an indirect method, such as the fluorescein diacetate (FDA) test or ‘Ultra-sound' or by the direct growth method of ‘germination'. Samples of white spruce seed inspected in 1928 varied in viability from 50% to 100%, but averaged 93%. A 1915 inspection reported 97% viability for white spruce seed.

Tagli successivi
In linea generale, il trattamento a tagli successivi consiste in una serie progressiva di interventi che rimuove gli alberi di un soprassuolo nel corso di un periodo di tempo di diversi anni e si conclude con il taglio finale che da’ vita ad un nuovo soprassuolo coetaneo. E’ un metodo di rinnovazione di fustaie coetanee che la rimozione degli alberi attraverso tre tagli in serie: 1) Taglio di preparazione; 2) Taglio di sementazione; e 3) Taglio di sgombero. Il successo dell’applicazione di tagli successivi e’ strettamente collegato a: 1. La lunghezza del periodo di rinnovazione, vale a dire il tempo che intercorre tra il taglio di sementazione e il periodo in cui la rinnovazione si e’ affermata; 2. la qualità del nuovo soprassuolo in termini di densità e crescita; e 3. l’incremento annuo degli alberi della fustaia rilasciati.
