“El diablo está fuera de aquí. Nos despedimos y le decimos hasta nunca”. Corría el año 2003 cuando Rhonda Faught, entonces secretaria de transporte del estado de Nuevo México, en Estados Unidos, ponía fin a una carretera maldita con estas palabras. Así lo recogen las crónicas del momento en el Albuquerque Journal. Faught se mostraba triunfal en el acto en el que la Ruta 666, conocida durante décadas como la ruta del diablo, pasaba a llamarse Ruta 491.
Nunca un cambio de nombre había significado tanto. El número de accidentes se desplomó claramente. Dejaron de llegar informes de sucesos extraños. De golpe y plumazo, esta carretera, construida siguiendo el trazado de un antiguo sendero entre México y Estados Unidos, había cambiado su destino. La historia no es ficción. Pero sí tiene una explicación mucho más racional.
Translation - English An Old Footpath, the Devil's Highway, and How Engineering Ended Half a Century of Damnation
"The devil's out of here. We say goodbye and good riddance." It was in 2003 when Rhonda Faught, then the Transportation Secretary of the U.S. state of New Mexico, put an end to a damned highway with these words. This is how the columns of the Albuquerque Journal tell it. Faught was triumphant at the ceremony where Route 666, known for decades as the devil's highway, was renamed Route 491.
A name change never meant so much. The number of accidents has notably decreased. Reports of strange events stopped coming in. All of a sudden, the fate of this highway, which was built along an old footpath between Mexico and the United States, had changed. History isn’t just a story. But there is a much more rational explanation.
