Source text - Spanish Aun cuando la traducción literaria tiene la larga tradición que se ha descrito en este artículo, es indudable que desde mediados del siglo XX la internacionalización de la cultura y la comunicación y la expansión de la industria editorial han propiciado e impulsado un aumento de la producción y la calidad de la traducción literaria; se ha desarrollado una mayor comprensión y conciencia del papel del traductor literario y los traductores cuentan con la formación y los instrumentos para hacer versiones íntegras y rigurosas. La figura se ha consolidado y su vinculación con las editoriales se ha reforzado (si bien existen todavía desencuentros y diferencias, como las reclamaciones por la insuficiente remuneración del trabajo de traducción).
Translation - English While literary translation possesses the longstanding tradition described in this article, there’s no doubt that in the middle of the 20th century the internationalization of culture and communication, and the expansion of the publishing industry have facilitated and fueled an increase in the production and quality of literary translation; a better understanding and awareness of the role of the literary translator was developed, and, translators have the necessary training and resources to produce translations that are complete and precise. The role has become established and its connections with publishing houses strengthened (last but not least, disagreements and discrepancies, such as complaints about inadequate pay for translation work, still exist).

Source text - Spanish Se sabe que es el comienzo del año escolar porque las cigüeñas blancas que habitan Novi Sad han dejado sus nidos y están en camino al África. Cada año, a principios de septiembre, el edificio que alberga la escuela primaria abre sus puertas a los niños de la zona. Han pasado décadas desde que crucé su umbral, pero los recuerdos que en esa escuela se forjaron durante el tiempo dedicado al aprendizaje siguen vivos. Mis compañeros y yo, si hubiéramos sabido en aquel entonces cómo la escuela no animaría a nuestros espíritus a volar, habríamos deseado partir junto con las cigüeñas. En primer lugar, no se nos permitía entrar en la escuela si no llevábamos, de pies a cabeza, el uniforme completo. Durante los seis días escolares llevábamos vestidos de pequeños cuadros blancos y azules, con un cuello blanco que se podía sacar, delantales azules y medias blancas. Además, el pelo tenía que estar recogido en tallos trenzados y recortado en blanco, la diadema de algodón blanco que rodeaba la cabeza tenía que llevarse siempre. Pronto descubriría que los uniformes no eran las únicas cosas que nos limitaban.
Translation - English It’s known that it is the beginning of the school year because the white storks inhabiting Novi Sad have left their nests and are on their way to Africa. Every year, at the beginning of September, the building housing the elementary school opens its doors to the children of the area. Several decades have passed since I crossed its threshold, but the memories forged in that school during time dedicated to learning are still vivid. My classmates and I, if we had known at that time the school wouldn’t inspire our spirits to fly, would have yearned to depart with the storks. First of all, we weren’t allowed to enter the school building if we weren’t wearing the full uniform, from head to toe. During the six school days we wore dresses with tiny blue and white squares and a removable white collar, blue aprons, and white stockings. Furthermore, the hair had to be worn in braids trimmed in white, the white cotton headband had to be on at all times. I would soon discover the uniforms were not the only items confining us.
A translator by trade, I am a poet at heart. Hence, I enjoy artistic/creative translations most of all.
