Source text - French Comme beaucoup, j'ai d'abord appris à aimer Chopin pour la beauté pure de ses mélodies et le lyrisme si fragile et si puissant qui s'en dégage. Chopin a certainement été pour beaucoup dans le développement d'un certain amour pour la musique.
Pourtant, avec le temps, en grandissant, l'entendant jouer à "toutes les sauces", et pas toujours des plus digestes, ni des plus variées, j'ai fini par associer ce compositeur à une forme de pianisme conventionnel et mièvre que je commençais alors á exécrer, toute comme la façon épaisse et pas moins conventionnelle de jouer à l'orchestre les oeuvres symphoniques.
Ce n'est que bien plus tard, l'entendant notamment sous les doigts de Maurizio Pollini, que j'ai été fasciné, au delà du lyrisme, par la subtilité formelle, la précision et l'équilibre de l'écriture de Chopin, constituée bien plus qu'une basse avec une ligne de chant, une perfection de composition qui ne tolère que peu l'approximation, en tout cas pas l'approximation du pianiste qui hypnotisé par la profondeur de son Steinway moderne et se laisser aller à son narcissisme au lieu de faire vivre l'oeuvre et la subtilité de son écriture.
C'est peut-être pour cette raison que je suis particulièrement attaché au Chopin de Garrick Ohlsson, qui lui, ne confond pas Chopin avec Rachmaninov et semble en avoir compris toute la subtilité, ses battements, la nécessité de faire vivre ces vagues de fond, de faire claquer les notes, la façon dont la ligne de basse doit nourrir la ligne de chant et vice versa dans un mouvement ondulent et non indigent, la nécessité de la clarté, du silence, de la fermeté du rythme, celle de faire jaillir les mots musicaux, de surprendre, d'utiliser toutes les ressources du piano, mais sans excès, toujours dans l'esprit du texte... et surtout sans jamais sombrer dans le narcissisme de l'abandon vide de sens ou á l'inverse de l'excès spectaculaire plus ou moins gratuit.
C'est donc aussi peut-être la raison pour laquelle je suis assez attaché à cette intégrale, au sein de laquelle Garrick Ohlsson tient un rôle central, et qui ne contient certes aucune des versions majeures de la discographie (Garrick Ohlsson fera encore mieux pour sa propre intégrale chez Hypérion) mais dont la cohérence esthétique, l'intégrité stylistique, le soin apporté au détail et au texte et le niveau de technicité sont remarquables. Ce qui unit aussi tous ces intervenants, c'est peut-être avant tout le souci de la clarté et la capacité à jouer avec les silences et la mise au jour de la structure et la logique internes des oeuvres (cette 10eme nocturne de Ohlsson en est peut-être une des manifestations les plus remarquables).
Translation - English Like many, I first learned to love Chopin for the sheer beauty of his melodies and their fragile yet striking lyricism. Chopin was certainly instrumental in the development of a certain passion for music.
However, as I grew older, hearing him play "all kinds of music", and not always the most digestible and varied, I came to associate this composer with a conventional and meek form of piano playing that I began to loathe, as did the thick and no less conventional way of playing symphonic works in the orchestra.
It was only much later, hearing him notably under the fingers of Maurizio Pollini, that I was fascinated, beyond the lyricism, by the formal subtlety, precision and balance of Chopin's writing, which consists of much more than a bass with a vocal line, a perfection of composition that tolerates little approximation, at least not the approximation of the pianist who is hypnotized by the depth of his modern Steinway and indulges in his narcissism instead of bringing the work and the subtlety of his writing to life.
Perhaps this is why I am particularly attached to Garrick Ohlsson's Chopin, who does not confuse Chopin with Rachmaninov and seems to have understood all its subtlety, its beats, the need to bring to life these bottom waves, to make the notes click, the way in which the bass line must nourish the vocal line and vice versa in an undulating and not indigent movement, the need for clarity, silence, firmness of rhythm, the need to make the musical words spring forth, to surprise, to use all the resources of the piano, but without excess, always in the spirit of the text. ... and above all without ever sinking into the narcissism of meaningless abandonment or, conversely, spectacular excess, more or less gratuitous.
This is perhaps also the reason why I am quite attached to this integral, in which Garrick Ohlsson plays a central role, and which certainly does not contain any of the major versions of the discography (Garrick Ohlsson will do even better for his own integral at Hyperion) but whose aesthetic coherence, stylistic integrity, attention to detail and to the text, and level of technicality are remarkable. What also unites all these contributors is perhaps above all the concern for clarity and the ability to play with the silences and the revelation of the internal structure and logic of the works (the nocturne no. 10 by Ohlsson is perhaps one of the most remarkable interpretations of this opus).
