Russian to English: ADAPTIVE WORKING TECHNOLOGY OF TECHNOGENIC METAL DEPOSITS AT THE PLACE OF THEIR BEDDING General field: Tech/Engineering Detailed field: Mining & Minerals / Gems
Translation - English The extraction of gold, uranium, and rare materials from old dumps has been under way since the early 1960s. Dumps serve as a source of additional production of copper, coal, etc. For example, aluminum, gallium, potash, soda, cement are obtained from nephelite floatation tailings of apatite. The use of 30-40% of solid waste of mining production as building materials and the use of 20-30% of solid waste for the laying of worked-out area in mines and quarries are forecast. Leaching will allow the extraction of heavy non-ferrous metals from concentration tailings. It is possible to use oxidizing ferruginous quartzites ac-cumulated in dumps of iron ore deposits and magnetic concentration tailings.
As known, the beginning of systematic studies of the ecologization of the mining and metallurgical complex as the main polluter and the consumer of mineral resources is associated with the work of G. Hotelling entitled “Econom-ics of Exhaustible Resources”, in which the foundations of the theory and prac-tice of using nonrenewable resources were formulated. Hence, the main way of ecologizing the mining and metallurgical complex is the repeated use of techno-genic mineral formations.
At the enterprises of the chemical and mining industries, the implementation of rational modern approaches to management is impossible without the inte-grated use of available resources as well as the development and implementation of low-waste and non-waste technologies. Industrialized countries have long been actively following this path. In countries such as the USA, Germany and Japan, the share of secondary raw materials in the production of cast iron is more than 40%, steel – 65%, copper – from 20 to 45%, paper production – 26%, cardboard – up to 44%. There is constant work to improve the technolo-gies involved in the production of relevant waste.
Technogenic deposits are man-made mineral formations on the surface of the Earth (e.g. dumps of mining enterprises, tailing dumps of concentrating mills, slag dumps of the fuel and energy complex, slags and sludges of metallurgical production, slag and sludge disposal areas of the chemical industry). In terms of the quantity and quality of mineral raw materials contained, they are now suita-ble for industrial use and, as science and technology develops, more applications will be found.
The main reasons for the formation of man-made wastes are the deteriora-tion of the technological quality of ores, a significant backlog of production technologies due to the deterioration of the quality of minerals, mining-geological and mining-engineering conditions for the development of deposits, processing, metallurgical redistribution and increased losses.
Thus far, the volume of technogenic accumulation of the mining and metal-lurgical complex is increasing, while the content of metals in the dumps often exceeds the content in ores extracted from the field and coming to enrichment. This is particularly true of the old dumps and tailing dumps formed in the 1940-1950s, when the conditions of extraction and processing were much higher than today's and little attention was paid to the complex extraction of mineral raw materials.
The functioning of the industry led to the formation of extensive zones of technogenic impact, which are often associated with each other; the impact is environmentally dangerous for the population living in these regions and in gen-eral for the natural environment. In this connection, the task of localization and neutralization of man-made and natural objects especially saturated with harm-ful substances (mercury, radionuclides, oil products, etc.) was extremely acute.
The main development of the use of technogenic raw materials is carried out for the waste of metallurgical production. In terms of content and reserves of useful components, compared with the deposits of mining, concentration tailings of ferrous and non-ferrous metals ores are more promising.
The processing of technogenic raw materials makes it possible to solve a number of problems of an economic, social and ecological nature.
The economic effect is made up of many components: reduction of expenses for the search for new deposits and exploration of exploited deposits; preserva-tion of depleting mineral resources in the bowels, through the extraction of use-ful components accumulated in man-made waste; increase in labor productivity due to the processing of already mined raw materials, which is essentially a fin-ished intermediate product and is located near operating enterprises; production of cheap construction materials, glass-ceramic products, cementitious additives in cement, mineral additives and fertilizers for agriculture, etc.
The implementation of these results will ensure the expected social and eco-logical effect: improvement of working conditions, since technogenic deposits are located on the surface of the Earth, in contrast to deep mines and quarries; improvement in the management of labor in many ore areas due to a reduction in the amount of work caused by the depletion of mineral resources; return after the reclamation of large land areas withdrawn from the economic turnover oc-cupied by production waste; decrease in the impact on the quality of adjacent land due to dust and gas drifts from dumps and tailings; reduction of environ-mental pollution (soil, surface and groundwater, atmospheric air) by heavy met-als and salts in concentrations often exceeding permissible standards.
Thus, all of the foregoing points to the relevance and importance of the problem of processing and full utilization of waste from the mining and metal-lurgical industries.
An analysis of the known works on heap leaching (HL) of metals has shown that drip irrigation is used in all HL geotechnologies. Thus, only gravitational forces are used. Hence, from the position of hydrodynamics this process is un-controllable, which is the biggest drawback of this HL technology.
One of the existing shortcomings is the need to establish the basis for any new stacks and not to use the previously announced grounds.
The drawbacks of the known HL methods also include their seasonal use. At negative temperatures, it is impossible to use irrigation leaching operations from the top down.
Such drawback as the consolidation ability of ore material with the uneven loss of permeability of ore stacks, which is no longer possible to eliminate dur-ing work also should be noted. Moreover, the larger the stack volume, the more this unevenness is manifested, which leads to additional losses of metal.
Another drawback of the existing HL technology is the appearance of so-termed "umbrellas" in the stack, under which there are dead zones for leaching solutions. Consequently, this entails significant losses of ore and metal.
It is possible to name other minor drawbacks of HL drip irrigation, but for further research they will be insignificant.
The use of the heap leaching with special hydraulic systems presented in this paper for leaching and productive solutions embedded in the stack, as well as the construction of a foundation adaptive to loads, which perceives alternating force fields, allow not only avoiding the above-mentioned drawbacks, but also using year-round operating of mine with new subsystems.
