Source text - English The Amazon rainforest is one of the tipping elements in the Earth system. We already know that on the one hand, reduced rainfall increases the risk of forest dieback, and on the other hand, forest loss can intensify regional droughts. So more droughts can lead to less forest leading to more droughts and so on.
Our study provides new insight into this issue, highlighting the risk of self-amplifying forest loss.
Under a dry-season halving of rainfall, at least 10 percent of the forest might be lost due to effects of self-amplification alone, adding to the substantial direct forest losses from reduced water availability. Computer simulations built by the scientists suggest that this has already happened in the Amazon about 20,000 years ago, in accordance with evidence from the Earth’s past. Taking into account the puzzlements of the vegetation-atmosphere-feedback, self-amplified forest dieback could amount up to 38 percent of the Amazon basin. In combination with the direct effects of the droughts, in fact most of the Amazon forest might eventually be at risk.
Translation - Arabic تُعتبَر الغابات المطيرة في الأمازونِ عنصراً من العناصرِ القادرةِ على قلبِ موازينِ نظامِ الأرض. نعلم أنه من جهة، يؤدّي انخفاض معدّل هطول الأمطار إلى موتِ الأشجار، ومن جهةٍ أخرى، فإنَّ موتَ الأشجارِ يزيد من شدّة الجفاف في المنطقة. لذا فإنَّ مزيداً من الجفاف سيؤدّي إلى فقدان الغابات، والّذي بدوره سيسبّب مزيداً من الجفاف، وهكذا.
توفّر هذه الدّراسة معلوماتٍ جديدةً عن هذه المشكلة، كما تسلّط الضّوءَ على مشكلةِ فقدانِ الغاباتِ المتفاقمِ ذاتيّاً.
خلال كلّ موسم جفاف ينخفض فيه هطول الأمطار إلى النصف، نفقد 10% من الغابة على الأقلّ بسبب الآثار النّاجمة عن التّفاقم الذّاتيّ وحده، إضافةً إلى الفقدان الكبير الّذي تسبّبه قلّة المياه المتوفّرة.
كما تشير نماذج المحاكاة المُصمَّمة من قِبَل العلماء إلى أنَّ هذا قد حدث بالفعل في الأمازون قبلَ 20,000 سنة، وهذا ما تدعمه الأدلّةُ من ماضي الأرض، وبأخذ التّفاعلات ما بين النّباتات والغلاف الجويّ بعين الاعتبار، قد تصلُ نسبةُ تدهور وفقدان الغابات إلى 38% من حوضِ الأمازون.
هذه النّسبة، بالإضافة إلى الآثار المباشِرة للجفاف، قد تعني أنَّ معظمَ غاباتِ الأمازون في خطر.
