De lat voor kwaliteitspeen ligt erg hoog
Yme Meirink:
,,Het seizoen eindigen met een groen middel geeft ons de beste kansen in de markt.”
Na tien jaar is bewaarpeen terug in het bouwplan van Yme Meirink in Oosternijkerk (Fr.).
Hij heeft zijn bodem op orde en houdt een zeer ruime rotatie aan.
,,Peen moet gezond opgroeien.
Dan kun je ook op lichte grond een goede kwaliteit telen’’, is zijn stellige overtuiging.
Yme Meirink geniet dit jaar dubbel van zijn winterwortelen.
Het gewas staat pal naast de boerderij en aan weerszijden ligt een bloemenstrook.
Onder andere zonnebloemen, boekweit, wikke en klaprozen zullen hier straks uitbundig bloeien.
,,Mensen uit het dorp lopen hier ’s avonds vaak nog even een rondje.
En ik heb er zelf ook lol in.
Ik kan wel een graanstrook zaaien langs het perceel, of een graspad in het midden, maar dat levert bijna niks op.
Op deze manier doen we veel mensen een plezier.’’
Tien jaar lang groeide er geen peen op het bedrijf van Meirink.
De Friese akkerbouwer nam er afstand van vanwege tegenvallende verdiensten en een reeks natte najaren.
,,We hadden onze grond toen niet zo op orde als nu.
In de tussentijd hebben we veel geïnvesteerd in de bodem.
We hebben meer gedraineerd, gebruiken compost, hakselen ons stro en telen maximaal groenbemesters.
Die aanpak werpt zijn vruchten af.’’
Op het 130 ha tellende bedrijf vormen pootaardappelen het grootste gewas.
Meirink ruilt percelen grasland met een veehouder en verhuurt land voor de teelt van broccoli.
De rest van het bouwplan bestaat uit wintertarwe, suikerbieten en zaaiuien en sinds vorig jaar 6 ha B-peen, van het ras Nerac.
,,Ik vind het een mooi gewas en we spreiden onze risico’s ermee.
Juist in een gewas als peen kunnen we onze investeringen in de bodemkwaliteit tot waarde maken.’’
Zowel de afzet als de bewaring verlopen via de Dutch Carrot Group.
Meirink heeft een deel van zijn peen op contract en draait met de rest mee in de pool.
Met 15 procent afslibbaar is de grond op Meirink’s bedrijf goed bewerkbaar, maar wel aan de lichte kant.
Het telen van een goede kwaliteit bewaarpeen vraagt aandacht.
,,De lat ligt erg hoog.
Januari is voor ons het moment van de waarheid, want dan wordt er getarreerd.
Afgelopen winter waren de resultaten gelukkig goed.
De peen zag er mooi uit en ook de uitslag van de N-Sure-test gaf geen verhoogde kans op bewaarziekten aan.’’
Voor een optimale uitgangssituatie vindt Meirink twee dingen erg belangrijk: een ruime rotatie en laat zaaien.
Bij het huidige areaal hoeft hij maar eens in de twintig jaar terug te komen op hetzelfde perceel.
Dat zit dus wel goed.
De akkerbouwer zaait bewust laat, om ervoor te zorgen dat ook de oogst laat valt.
,,Peen is een echte herfstgroente en moet vochtig naar binnen worden gebracht, voor minimale beschadigingen en voldoende grond in de kist.
Het draagvermogen van onze percelen is goed, dus voor de oogst ben ik niet zo bang.
Dat komt wel goed.’’
Dit jaar wachtte hij met zaaien totdat er neerslag in de voorspelling zat.
Hij zaaide op 30 mei geprimed zaad, in vochtige grond.
Ideaal, zo leek het.
Daarna viel er echter een bui van 30 mm, waardoor er een korst ontstond.
Hij besloot om het perceel twee keer te beregenen, om de jonge plantjes door de korst te helpen.
Over de stand, met ongeveer 80 planten op een meter, is hij gezien de omstandigheden tevreden.

The bar for quality carrots is very high
Yme Meirink:
“Ending the season with a green product gives us the best chances in the market.”
After ten years, the winter carrot is back in Yme Meirink's growing plan in Oosternijkerk (Fr.).
He has his soil in order and maintains a very broad rotation.
“Carrots need to grow up healthy.
Then you can raise good quality in light soil,” is his firm conviction.
This year, Yme Meirink in enjoying twice his usual winter roots.
The crop is right next to the farm house and on both sides, there is a row of flowers.
Among others, buckwheat, vetch and poppies will soon start blooming abundantly.
“People from the village often take an evening stroll along here.
And I also enjoy that myself.
I could plant a row of grains along the parcel, or put a strip of lawn in the middle, but that yields almost nothing.
This way we make a lot of people happy.”
For ten years no carrots grew on Meirink's property.
The Frisian farmer avoided them due to disappointing earnings and a series of wet autumns.
“Our soil was not in good shape like it is now.
In the meantime, we invested a lot in the soil.
We drained more, use compost, chop our straw and generate as much green manure as possible.
That approach is paying off.”
On his farm measuring 130 ha, seed potatoes make up the largest crop.
Meirink exchanges parcels of grassland with a cattle farmer and rents out land for broccoli cultivation.
The rest of the growing area is made up of winter wheat, sugar beets and seed onions, and since last year 6 ha of winter carrots of the Nerac variety.
“I think it's a great crop and we spread our risks with it.
Especially with a crop like carrots we can make our investment in soil quality worth it.”
Both the sale and storage are done via the Dutch Carrot Group.
Meirink has part of his carrots under contract and competes on the open market with the rest.
With 15 percent slippage, the soil on Meirink's farm is well workable, but on the light side.
Growing a good quality winter carrot demands attention.
“The bar is very high.
January is the moment of truth for us, because that's when we take stock.
Fortunately, last winter the results were good.
The carrots looked good and the results of the N-Sure test also showed no elevated chance of storage diseases.
For optimal results, Meirink sees two things as very important: a broad rotation and late seeding.
With the current acreage, he only has to return to the same parcel once every 20 years.
So that's good.
The farmer intentionally seeds late, to also ensure that the harvest comes later.
“The carrot is a real fall vegetable, and needs to be brought in moist, for minimal damage and with enough soil in the crate.
The capacity of our parcels is good, so I am not so worried about the harvest.
That will work out fine.”
This year he waited with seeding until there was rain in the forecast.
He planted primed seed on May 30th, in moist soil.
Ideal, or so it seemed.
But then a storm dumped 30 mm of rain, which caused a crust to form.
He decided to irrigate the parcel twice to help the young plants break through the crust.
Regarding the outcome, with about 80 plants per meter, he is satisfied given the circumstances.

I was born in Amsterdam and moved to Rochester, NY, USA, when I was three. At home we always spoke Dutch. I started to learn English when I started public school. My parents were "Francophiles" and my Mom, a teacher, started teaching me French when I was about 4, and we spent most summers in France. Languages were always something I was interested in and continued to explore. In high I studied Spanish and Latin for 4 years. I did a study abroad in Perpignan, in the Southeastern corner of France, with a host family who were both teachers, and who spoke Catalan at home. Of course I wanted to learn it, and did. I continued to study it in later years. In college, at Duke, I took Italian and Portuguese, and did a study abroad in Rio de Janeiro. I later enrolled in an International MBA program at the University of South Carolina where I did a year-long internship in Lisbon, Portugal.
Outside of translation, I am a Realtor after working in Advertising at FedEx for 17 years, and also in several management positions including at Embraco, a Brazilian company's US offices, where I used Portuguese on a daily basis. Outside work, I love to cook, I am an artist and architectural model builder, and play guitar, bass and drums.
