Portuguese to English: USE OF LIQUID SOAPS IN PROSTHESIS DISINFECTION General field: Science Detailed field: Medical: Dentistry
Translation - English Prosthetic stomatitis is an illness that is usually developed when microorganisms colonize the internal surface of a dental prosthesis (Darwazeh et al., 2010, Lazarin et al., 2014, Dantas18 APFM et al., 2014). Due to certain characteristics of acrylic resins, such as roughness, hydrophobicity and electrostatic force, adhesion of microorganisms to their surfaces is favored, resulting in biofilm formation (Salerno et al., 2011). These biofilms are much more resistant to antimicrobial agents than planktonic cells, due their extracellular matrices, which act as protective coatings (Nett et al., 2010, Faot et al., 2014). Prosthesis brushing for efficient biofilm removal requires a certain level of manual capability, which is usually compromised in elderly patients (Brondani et al., 2012). Therefore, chemical disinfection, associated to the brushing method, is considered the most indicated procedure (Faot et al., 2014; Felton et al., 2011). Considering the disadvantages of some chemical solutions used in prostheses disinfection, the objective of this study was to evaluate biological, mechanical and physical properties of acrylic resins, used as bases for prostheses, after their immersion in liquid disinfectant soaps for different periods of time, in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for Candida albicans.
