A história de Inabela, contada no início des-
te capítulo, ilustra como essa emergência trouxe
também a necessidade de preparo das equipes
para saber como receber e cuidar das crianças e
das famílias com casos de SCZv e outras deficiên-
cias em geral. Além disso, foi preciso pensar na
reorganização das estruturas de saúde existentes
e mesmo na formação de novas.
Uma das dificuldades enfrentadas nesse mo-
mento para a investigação e também para dar
acompanhamento aos bebês e suas famílias era a
falta de um exame para a confirmação do diagnós-
tico de infecção pelo vírus zika.
“O primeiro protocolo incluía uma série de exa-
mes para afastar outras possibilidades que podiam
causar malformação, como citomegalovírus, toxo-
plasmose, sífilis, HIV e rubéola. Não havia um exame
específico para o zika nessa ocasião”, lembra Maria
Angela Rocha, chefe do Departamento de Infecto-
logia Pediátrica do Hospital Universitário Oswaldo
Cruz da Universidade de Pernambuco, em Recife.
A médica conta que somente em fevereiro de
2016 essa situação mudou. O CDC deu um treinamento em Belém, no Pará, e forneceu kits capazes
de detectar anticorpos produzidos nas fases agu-
das iniciais da doença. “Havíamos retirado líquor
da espinha das crianças com microcefalia e arma-
zenado para quando houvesse o exame. Quando
tivemos essa segurança vinda do CDC, fizemos
os testes e conseguimos a comprovação efetiva”,
lembra Maria Angela.
Logo que surgiram os primeiros relatos de ca-
sos de microcefalia, Correia montou no gabinete da
Secretaria Municipal de Saúde de Recife uma sala
de situação emergencial para acompanhar a atua-
lização diária dos dados epidemiológicos, clipping
de imprensa e de publicações científicas sobre o
tema. “Naquele momento, foram dois grandes
eixos de atuação da prefeitura de Recife. Mesmo
com a incerteza científica, havia bastante proba-
bilidade de o fenômeno estar associado à infecção
pelo vírus zika. Portanto, o primeiro eixo foi uma
campanha de combate ao vetor Aedes aegypti”, ex-
plica o secretário de Saúde de Recife. O segundo
eixo, segundo ele, foi utilizar as tecnologias e os
programas disponíveis, fazendo adequações ne-
cessárias para garantir que houvesse o acolhimen-
to das famílias e o acompanhamento das crianças.

Inabela’s story, as told in the beginning of this chapter, illustrates how the emergence of this emergency
brought with it the need for medical teams to be prepared regarding how they would receive and care for the
children and families with cases of SCZv and other disabilities in general. Beyond that, there was also the need to
think about how to reorganize the existing healthcare structures, as well as the creation of new ones.
The absence of an examination that could confirm the diagnosis of infection by zika virus was one of the main
challenges presented for the scientific investigations and for the monitoring of babies and their families at this initial
moment.
“The first protocol included a series of exams that would eliminate other possible causes of the malformation,
like cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, syphilis, HIV e rubella. We still had no specific zika exam at that time”,
remembers Maria Angela Rocha, Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectology in the Oswaldo Cruz University
Hospital at the University of Pernambuco, in Recife.
Doctor Maria Angela Rocha tells us, that it was only in February 2016 that this scenario changed. CDC offered
a training course in Belem, Pará, and supplied the kits that were able to detect antibodies produced in the acute
initial phase of the disease. “We had taken samples of cerebrospinal fluid from the spines of children with
microcephaly and stored those samples for whenever we would have a test ready. When CDC assured us that
there was, we carried out the tests and were able to find effective proof”, Maria Angela remembers.
