Source text - German Aber seit den 1960er und 1970er Jahren kennen Physiker Himmelsobjekte, die sehr viel stärkere Schwerkraftwellen ausstoßen, vor allem Schwarze Löcher und Neutronensterne – extrem kompakte Klumpen, die das Vielfache der Masse unserer Sonne auf dem Raum einer Großstadt vereinen. Schon damals zeigten Berechnungen: Werden solche Massen schnell genug beschleunigt, versetzt das die Raumzeit so stark in Wallung, dass das Gravitationswellenecho auch in großer Entfernung noch aufspürbar sein müsste. Bei der Kollision der beiden Schwarzen Löcher, die im September 2015 aufgespürt wurden, wandelte sich beispielsweise das Energieäquivalent von drei Sonnenmassen in Raumzeitschwingungen um.
Wie der Knall eines Hammerschlags auf einer unendlich ausgedehnten Stahlplatte breiten sich diese Vibrationen im Weltall aus. Alles, was sie passieren, wird binnen einiger Millisekunden einige Male in einer Richtung gedehnt und einer anderen zusammengedrückt. Ohne spezielle Messgeräte bekommen wir davon nichts mit, da die Raumzeit enorm steif ist, vielfach steifer als Stahl. Selbst ausgesprochen starke Gravitationswellen verformen das Weltall nur minimal.
Translation - English However, since the 1960s and 1970s, physicists have been aware of celestial objects that radiate much stronger gravitational waves, above all black holes and neutron stars – extremely compact bodies that compress several solar masses into the size of a large city. Already in those days, calculations showed that, if such masses are accelerated at sufficient speed, they shake up space-time to such an extent that the echo of the gravitational wave would be detectable even at a great distance. For example, during the collision of the two black holes that were detected in September 2015, the energy equivalent of three solar masses was converted into ripples in space-time.
Like the clang of a hammer on an infinitely expanded steel plate, these vibrations spread out through the cosmos. Everything they pass becomes stretched in one direction and compressed in the other, several times in the space of a few milliseconds. Without any special measuring instruments we do not notice any of this, as space-time is very rigid, many times more rigid than steel. Even exceptionally strong gravitational waves only minimally deform the universe.
