This detail from a 17th-century painting by Giovanni Stanchi depicts a watermelon that looks strikingly different from modern melons, as Vox points out. A cross-section of the one in the painting, which was made between 1645 and 1672, appears to have swirly shapes embedded in six triangular pie-shaped pieces.
- Modern watermelon
Over time, humans have bred watermelons to have a red, fleshy interior – which is actually the placenta – like the ones seen here. Some people think the watermelon in Stanchi's painting may just be unripe or unwatered, but the black seeds in the painting suggest that it was, in fact, ripe.

Originally opened in 1931, this airport now specialises in travel to Latin America, with direct flights to Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Santiago de Chile. Architects Richard Rogers and Antonio Lamela designed the Terminal Four building – which opened in 2006 – with the unifying element being the use of bamboo, to create a sense of calm.
Large windows in the roof allow natural light to enter a terminal that, along with its satellite building 1.5 miles away, covers 760,000 square metres. The two buildings are connected by an underground railway.
- Shenzhen Bao’an international airport, China
The design of Terminal Three at Shenzhen is down to Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, who describe their work as looking like a manta ray, which can be found off the coast of China.
The airport welcomes 32.3 million passengers a year, a number made possible by the sweeping design of the third terminal, opened in 2013. It has 63 fixed gates, 15 movable gates and a ceiling that is 79 metres high.

Source text - English Many people believe themselves to be multitasking masters, but could it all be in their heads? Our brains are designed to focus on one thing at a time, and bombarding them with information only slows them down.
MIT neuroscientist Earl Miller notes that our brains are "not wired to multitask well... when people think they're multitasking, they're actually just switching from one task to another very rapidly. And every time they do, there's a cognitive cost."
This constant task-switching encourages bad brain habits. When we complete a tiny task (sending an email, answering a text message, posting a tweet), we are hit with a dollop of dopamine, our reward hormone. Our brains love that dopamine, and so we're encouraged to keep switching between small mini-tasks that give us instant gratification.
This creates a dangerous feedback loop that makes us feel like we're accomplishing a ton, when we're really not doing much at all (or at least nothing requiring much critical thinking). In fact, some even refer to email/Twitter/Facebook-checking as a neural addiction.

Eschleman adds that he was also attempting to “better understand how people can use their free time to allow them to come back and feel energized and hopefully get more out of their work.”

The index shows how the net worth of each country’s wealthiest person compares to the livelihood of his fellow countrymen by calculating the lump sum in dollars each person living in poverty would get if the assets of the richest citizen were liquidated and redistributed. India’s large population means Mukesh Ambani’s $19.2 billion net worth amounts to the smallest payout to the poor of any other country analyzed. His net worth is 13.6 million times more than the gross domestic product of his fellow Indians. Still, with 30 percent of the country destitute, his riches would result in each poor person getting $59, enough for 118 basic meals priced at 35 rupees (50 cents) and consisting of rice, dal, two vegetables, one pickle and three chapatis.
Cyprus and Sweden are where the poor stand to gain the most, $45,987 and $33,149 respectively, yet they are also exceptional. They have small populations — the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean has 1.1 million people — and fairly high living standards — Sweden ranks among the highest when it comes to GDP per capita.

Whatever you call them, they’re short videos of her travels that the illustrator and designer posts to Instagram. Each begins with a close-up of the globetrotter waving happily as the camera pulls back to capture a dramatic locale. Up and up it goes, rising ever higher until Lusano slips out of sight, making the video a celebration of place, not self.
“I don’t like to take or share ordinary, hand-held selfies.” Lusano says. “I like creating photo and video collections that I can share with my friends and family, that they’ll really enjoy—not just cell phone snapshots that I’ll back up to a hard drive after a trip and never look at again.”
Lusano made her first dronie last year during a trip to Belize. While exploring Mayan ruins, she thought sending her GoPro-equipped drone aloft for a wider view would be the best way to document the moment.
“It seemed like the perfect place for a shot that would show me sitting casually before zooming out to reveal that Holy shit I’m on top of a giant pyramid!” she says.
