Russian to English: Немецкая система обучения: ключ к успеху страны // The German Education System: The Key to the Country's Success General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Government / Politics
Translation - English Today’s Germany is one of the most developed countries in the European Union – a paradise for researchers and international students. It is a country of philosophical and literary geniuses that have made invaluable contributions to the development of Western European civilization. It is a country that has brought the world around 70 Nobel laureates. So, what is the secret of the German education system? And how important is the role of governmental support in the field of education and research?
Highlights of the German Education System
There are 427 higher education institutions in Germany today. Out of these, 108 are universities, 52 are art colleges, and 215 are technical institutes.
Since the founding of the first university in 1386 in the city of Heidelberg, German society has been meticulous about supporting higher education and research institutions. And the creation of such a high-quality system of education can be largely attributed to the support of the government.
The continual and substantial budgetary support from federal states and the national government, the educational and financial autonomy of higher education institutions, as well as the focus on scientific research are some of the German higher education system’s strong points.
The funding of universities is delegated to the government of each separate federal state. This principle is fixed in the German constitution. The budgets of German higher education institutions come out of each federal state’s budget. At the same time, though, there is also the centralized support of Berlin, as well as European Union foundations. Resources for creating new research centers or acquiring expensive equipment are generally covered through the joint efforts of local authorities and the federal government...
