Source text - English There are approximately 2.1 million people living with MS worldwide. Although the disease is not contagious, epidemiologists who study patterns of disease occurrence have identified factors associated with a higher prevalence of MS.
Gender:
MS is significantly more common in women. All autoimmune diseases are more common in women. The prevalence of MS is two to three times greater in women than men. This finding has stimulated research initiatives to investigate the role of hormones in MS.
Age:
MS can occur at any age, but diagnosis is most common between 20 and 40 years of age.
Family history:
If a first degree relative has MS, then the risk of developing the disease is increased to between 1 and 3%, as compared to the risk in the general population, which is 0.1%.2 Interestingly, although identical twins share the exact same genetic makeup, the risk for an identical twin developing the disease if their sibling has it is 25%, which indicates that factors other than genetics influence the development of MS.
Viral infections:
Various viruses have been implicated in increasing the risk of developing MS, but none have been confirmed. Chlamydia pneumonia, a bacterium, has also been suggested but never proven.
Ethnicity:
People of Asian, African, or Native American descent have the lowest risk of developing the disease, but Caucasians from northern Europe are particularly vulnerable to developing MS. Some ethnic groups, such as the Inuit, Australian Aborigines, Yakuts, Hutterites, Hungarian Romani, and Maoris have few if any documented cases of MS regardless of where they live. These variations that occur even within geographic areas with the same climate suggest that geography, ethnicity, and other factors interact in some complex way to influence MS.

تزداد احتمالية إصابة الفرد بالتصلب المتعدد في حال وجود من يعاني من ذات المرض بين أقارب الدرجة الأولى، وذلك بنسبة 1 إلى 3% مقارنةً باحتمالية التعرض للإصابة به بوجهٍ عام، والتي تبلغ نسبتها 0.1%. ومن الأمور المثيرة للاهتمام ما توصلت إليه الأبحاث بشأن التوائم المتطابقة الذين يتشاركون الصفات الجينية ذاتها، فقد وُجد أنه في حال تعرض أحد الشقيقين للإصابة بالتصلب المتعدد، فإن احتمالية إصابة توأمه المتطابق بالمرض تصل إلى 25%، الأمر الذي يشير إلى وجود عوامل أخرى تؤثر على فرص الإصابة بمرض التصلب المتعدد إلى جانب العوامل الجينية.
العدوى الفيروسية:
تتسبب العديد من الفيروسات في زيادة مخاطر الإصابة بمرض التصلب المتعدد، ولكن لم يتوفر بعد ما يثبت ذلك. على سبيل المثال، هناك فرضيات تشير إلى أن البكتيريا المسببة لمرض متدثرة الالتهاب الرئوي تتسبب كذلك في زيادة فرص الإصابة بالتصلب المتعدد، ولكن لم تتحول تلك الفرضيات إلى حقائق بعد.
