Translation - English The striking colour contrasts caught my eye when I first saw XXX’s new works.
There is strong primitivism in the totem images on monumental poles and the detached, deformed presentations. Anthropologists of the 19th century, who paid no particular heed to the beauty of primitive art, saw the images as a result of undeveloped, pagan culture or ethnological samples that are, like those of natural history, cultural evidence of human evolution at an early stage. Primitive art did not gain attention until around 1905, when Parisian fauvist and cubist painters, such as Picasso, Matisse and Apollinaire, discovered the beauty of African and Oceanic masks and sculptures with much amazement. The discovery not only exerted an enormous impact on the development and style of western modern art throughout the century, but also spurred market demand for primitive art, leading to mass publication and sales of primitive art catalogues as well as increased research on the history of primitive art. Some even attempted to subsume the research under the discipline of art history. All these contributed to a rise in status of primitive art whose aesthetic values came to be acknowledged by mainstream society.

Source text - English Throughout the middle ages, Venice expanded in power and influence in the Mediterranean, and found itself in an advantageous position to lend assistance to the leaders of the Fourth Crusade. Short of funds, the crusaders turned to Venice, agreeing to attack the capital of
Byzantium in exchange for warships. As a result, the once-powerful city fell in 1204, leaving it under the rule of Venice.
Politically, much of the known world was facing internal strife among its leaders. Venice, in contrast, enjoyed a uniquely ordered leadership headed by the doge. While the elected doge’s powers were defined by the Venetian constitution, real power was vested in the Council of Ten and the 2,000-plus members of the Grand Council, from whom the doge and his advisers were elected.
By the 16th century, Venice had colonized all of northeastern Italy and held a monopoly over Mediterranean trade. To sustain its military might, Venetian shipyards were turning out warships at an impressive rate of one per day. Power, however, brought war, as the Holy Roman Empire sacked the cities of the Veneto and the Turks drove Venice
from the eastern Mediterranean, eventually taking Cyprus in 1570.
Translation - Chinese
