Translation - English For the PGR, death of militiaman "strengthens" argument to federalise Marielle case
The summit of the Public Prosecution of the Republic (PGR) has concluded that the death of Adriano Nobrega "strengthens" the argument for federalising the investigations of the Marielle case. The prosecutor general Augusto Aras concluded that, "with each new fact involving characters linked to the Crime Bureau (among them Ronnie Lessa, accused of killing the city councillor and her driver Anderson Gomes), the need to conduct an investigation independent of the state of Rio [de Janeiro] becomes greater."
Friends and family of Marielle Franco are opposed to the federalisation and fear that the death of the militiaman might reignite the debate over the displacement of jurisdiction, which had already lost the support of minister Sergio Moro (Jurist).
Behind the scenes, prosecutors want to understand if the killing of Adriano Nobrega in the operation in Bahia was due to an "archive burning" - as the defence of the militiaman suggests - and maintain that the investigation should happen away from Rio de Janeiro.
Adriano Nobrega had been in hiding for a year and was killed last Sunday (9th) following a confrontation with police officers in Bahia, according to investigators.
Bahia's Security Secretary said in a statement that Adriano was suspected of involvement in the murder of Marielle Franco and the driver Anderson Gomes in March 2018. The name of the militiaman, however, does not appear in the file on the death of the councillor. The investigation into the councillor's death is underway in Rio de Janeiro, but the ex-Public Prosecutor for the State, Raquel Dodge, asked the High Tribunal of Justice last September to move the jurisdiction of the case.
The request is set to be examined by the STJ, and a decision is expected to be reached before July.

Translation - English The man who lives alone in the middle of the Patagonian Steppe
Floriano does not know that the cathedral of Notre Dame burned down, let alone that the Twin Towers fell. That September day, his mind was bent on moving the old door a few metres to make the goat pen bigger. Olga, his wife, was lending him a hand. She was not yet suffering the first symptoms of the cancer that would later knock her sideways.
Floriano is not familiar with the avatars of Messi or the Pope. A few months ago, he happened to hear something before turning off the radio he only uses to listen to the important things: the messages from National Esquel Radio to the rural populations at eight in the morning, at two in the afternoon, and a repeat at five pm. He listens to the important stuff and then turns it off to save the batteries.
For sure, Floriano does not know who Bolsonaro, Trump or Maduro are; he doesn't even know the details of what happened with Macri. The day of his inauguration, while the ex-president danced, Floriano was thinking about Olga and waiting passively for the embers to heat the kettle enough for his mate, just as he had done the day before, and the previous Friday, and two thousand three hundred mornings and afternoons before that.
The kettle still sits atop the wood burner, darkened a little by a grimace. The goats have given birth in the pen he enlarged; the River Chico runs lighter, save the occasional outburst that break its usual flow, taciturn and sad. The sparrows return; the wind, never. The wind is always there; here, the wind is the sparrows that challenge you in their flocks, sitting defiant on the wrinkled branches of a stoic larch. "They're flying low" warns Floriano. "The cold is coming."
