Italy is described in the Encyclopedia Britannica as “less a single nation than a collection of culturally related points in an uncommonly pleasing setting”. The idea that Italy appears more than a single nation comes, perhaps, from a superficial impression that it is a country dealing with continuing internal struggles towards democratic unity. Below the surface, however, an intricate balance of sophisticated political skills has brokered a succession of short-term governments that have ensured stability. This successful and very Italian formula has produced an economy which supports one of the highest standards of living in the world for Italy’s population of nearly 59 million. The elements of variety within Italy’s 20 regions contribute to its world renowned excellence in fashion, innovation in technical design, the treasures of antiquity it holds and the peninsula’s physical beauty.

In the centre of this peninsular, lying across the central Apennine Mountains is Abruzzo, one of Italy’s most magical and romantic regions and the least-explored. This mountainous land of castles and Medieval and Renaissance hill towns is partly covered in forests where wolves, bears, golden eagles and the rare Apennine lynx may still be seen in their natural habitat. Over a third of Abruzzo’s surface area is designated to national or regional parkland which provides a haven for hiking, skiing and mountain biking. Four national and eighteen regional parks, lakes and wetlands are of great environmental significance and lie within Abruzzo’s four provinces of Aquila, Pescara, Teramo and Chieti.
