يربط معظم الأشخاص بين النفط ووسائل النقل، إلا أن هناك الآلاف من المنتجات المصنوعة من النفط يستخدمها العالم يوميًا، إذ يُنتج برميل واحد من النفط الخام (42 جالونًا) نحو 20 جالونًا من البنزين و4 جالونات من وقود الطائرات، أما الـ 18 جالونًا المتبقين فيدخلون في تصنيع العديد من المنتجات الأخرى.
وفي عام 1872 حصل عالم كيميائي شاب يُدعى "روبرت تشيسيبروغ" على براءة اختراع لتحويل البقايا الزيتية المتروكة في آبار النفط إلى بلسم وأطلق عليه الفازلين.
وكانت إطارات السيارات بيضاء حتى عام 1910 حين أدخلت شركة "بي إف غودريتش" الرائدة في مجال صناعة الإطارات مادة الكربون الأسود المصنوعة من حرق بعض المنتجات النفطية، مما أدى إلى زيادة متانة وقوة الإطارات، وإضافة إلى ذلك بدأت منتجات أخرى مشتقة من البترول تتخذ طريقها إلى السوق مثل الشموع والعلكة.
ورغم أن النفط يدخل في صناعة الكثير من المنتجات، إلا أن دراسة استقصائية أجريت عام 2007 في الولايات المتحدة كشفت أن 72% من الجمهور الأمريكي يجهل معلومة أن البلاستيك مصنوع من المنتجات البترولية وخاصة النفط. | Translation - English
