English to Arabic: Building on tradition
Source text - English
Building on tradition

For as long as there has been architecture, people have tried to define what the principles of architecture should be. There is still no definition that surpasses Vitruvius’ ‘commodity, firmness and delight’ – the idea that a building should do what its users need, that it should be stable and serviceable, and that it should give pleasure.
The first Qataris designing buildings– who at the time did not
have any formal architectural training but had an innate sense of what would work for them – responded to their own needs and to the cultural and climatic requirements. They used locally available materials to make buildings that provided shelter from the climate and allowed the inhabitants to live their lives in the way that they wanted to, within their families, their social groups, and the
country, following their religious and cultural beliefs. They made the best use of resources, using them as sparingly as possible and frequently recycling elements.
The result was a spare and beautiful architecture that responded to the sense of place and which resonates with us today as we seek to conserve and not to waste resources.
Since that time, there have been tremendous changes, as the country has become much wealthier, particularly through the discovery of oil. International communications have increased greatly, and there was for a time a pressure to modernise through imported ideas and styles, making city quarters that were
dependent on the motor car and buildings that, instead of working with the climate, battled against it. This has been a problem in many major cities around the world and each needs to find its own approach.

Bio

Abdullah Zaki has almost 10 years’ experience of localizing and crafting compelling and culturally appropriate Arabic content for a wide range of audiences.

Over the course of his professional careers, he served several local and international clients, including but not limited to Maersk Oil, Vodafone, Hyundai, Northwestern University, FIFA World Cup, delivering hundreds of magazine issues, web copies, newsletters, books, media packs, etc.

As a guardian of his clients' reputation, Abdullah understands how important high-quality Arabic copy-writing and translation is for their brands and engagement with the Arab communities. His approach to achieving that is not to translate word for word but striking a careful balance between sticking to the literal translation and a freer translation style. By doing that, he ensures the client is given an Arabic content freed from any influence of the source language, keeping the readers interested.

Although Abdullah manages different types of content, he has a passion and special interest in publications, marketing, and communication (All materials prepared to be published on all media platforms, including books, magazines, web copy, newsletter, press releases, feature stories, advertorials, taglines, social media, etc.).

Abdullah graduated with an honors degree from the faculty of languages and translation at Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt in 2008
