Alex only laughed, shrugged. “They’re close enough. And mine’s in heat, believe me.”
“She’s drunk, Alexi.”
“So what? I didn’t pour the drinks down her throat. I’m up for some fresh meat, and I’m fucking getting laid tonight. Don’t tell me you’re not planning to nail down the hot brunette, bro.”
“She’s sweet.” A smile tugged at Ilya’s mouth. “And just a little underripe. She’s not so drunk as yours. If she’s willing, I’ll take her to bed. I like her mind.”
Alex’s lips twisted. “Give me a fucking break.”
“No, I do. It adds something.” He glanced around. Too much the same, he thought of the women who passed by, too much predictable. “Refreshing—this is the word.”
“The blonde’s setting it up so we’ll go to my place. All of us. She said she won’t go unless her friend goes. You can have the spare room.”
“I prefer my own place.”
“Look, it’s both of them or neither. I didn’t put in over two hours getting her primed to have her walk her fine ass out of here because you can’t close the deal with the friend.”
Ilya’s eyes went hard over his beer. “I can close the deal, dvojurodny brat.”
“And which do you think will close it tight, cousin? The crap apartment you’re still living in, or my house on the lake?”
Ilya jerked a shoulder. “I prefer my simpler place, but all right. We’ll go to yours. No drugs, Alexi.”
“Oh, for Christ’s sake.”
“No drugs.” Ilya leaned forward, stabbed a finger on the table. “You keep it legal. We don’t know them, but mine, I think, would not approve. She says she wants to be FBI.”
“You’re shitting me.”
“No. No drugs, Alexi, or I don’t go—and you don’t get laid.”
“Fine. Here they come.”
“Stand up.” Ilya kicked Alex under the table. “Pretend you’re a gentleman.”
He rose, held out a hand to Liz.
“We’d love to get out of here,” Julie announced, wrapping herself around Alex. “We’d love to see your house.”
“Then that’s what we’ll do. Nothing beats a private party.”
“This is okay with you?” Ilya murmured as they started out.
“Yes. Julie really wants to, and we’re together, so—”
“No, I don’t ask what Julie wants. I ask if you want.”
She looked at him, felt a sigh and a tingle. It mattered to him, what she wanted. “Yes. I want to go with you.”
“This is good.” He took her hand, pressed it to his heart as they wove through the crowd. “I want to be with you. And you can tell me more about Liz. I want to know everything about you.”
“Julie said boys—men—only want to talk about themselves.”
He laughed, tucked his arm around her waist. “Then how do they learn about fascinating women?”

«Η ξανθιά θα κανονίσει να πάμε στο σπίτι μου. Όλοι μας. Είπε ότι δε θα έρθει αν δεν έρθει η φίλη της. Μπορείτε να πάτε στην άλλη κρεβατοκάμαρα.»
«Προτιμώ το σπίτι μου.»
«Κοίτα, είναι ή οι δυο τους, ή τίποτα. Δε χαράμισα πάνω από δυο ώρες να την ψήσω, για να πάρει το ωραίο κωλαράκι της και να φύγει επειδή εσύ δε μπορείς να κλείσεις τη συμφωνία με τη φίλη της.»

«Όχι. Χωρίς ναρκωτικά, Αλέξι, διαφορετικά δε θα έρθω –και εσύ δε θα πηδήξεις.»

«Σήκω πάνω.» Ο Ιλιά κλότσησε τον Άλεξ κάτω από το τραπέζι. «Προσποιήσου ότι είσαι τζέντλεμαν.»

In 1967, the critic and novelist John Updike wrote a brief reflec- tion on the photographs and amateur films taken in Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963, in the few momen- tous seconds when President John F. Kennedy’s motorcade drove through and he was hit by an assassin’s bullets. The more closely and carefully the frames are examined, Updike noted, the less sense they made. Who was the “umbrella man,” with an open umbrella despite it being a sunny day? Or the “tan-coated man” who first runs away, then is seen in “a gray Rambler driven by a Negro”? What about the blurry figure in the window next to the one from which the shots were fired? Were these innocent bystanders or part of a conspiracy? Updike wrote:
We wonder whether a genuine mystery is being concealed here or whether any similar scrutiny of a minute section of time and space would yield similar strangenesses—gaps, inconsistencies, warps, and bubbles in the surface of circumstance. Perhaps, as with the elements of matter, investigation passes a threshold of common sense and enters a sub-atomic realm where laws are mocked, where persons have the life-span of beta particles and the transparency of neutrinos, and where a rough kind of aver- aging out must substitute for absolute truth.
Years later, many frames turned out to have rational explana- tions. The “umbrella man” was identified—to the satisfaction of all but diehard conspiracy theorists. He testified before a Congressional committee that he had been simply protesting the Kennedy family’s dealings with Hitler’s Germany in the Second World War, a black umbrella—British Prime Minister Neville Cham- berlain’s trademark accessory—being a symbol for Nazi appeasers. Far from heralding a breach in the rationality of the world, the umbrella man was just a heckler.
But Updike’s description rings true. He knew that when scien- tists look at the subatomic world frame by frame, so to speak, what they find is discontinuous and strange, its happenings random except when collectively considered. He also knew that ordinary human beings tend to find our lives following a similar crazy logic, even if metaphorically. Our world does not always feel smooth, continuous, and law-governed; close up, it often feels jittery, dis- continuous, and irrational. Today’s world does not have the gentle geometry of the Newtonian universe, but is more like the surface of a boiling pot of water. Calling that a quantum condition may be scientifically incorrect, but to Updike—and to numerous other writers and poets—it was metaphorically apt.
How did the gentle geometry of the Newtonian world, stable and compelling for over two centuries, come to be perforated by gaps, inconsistencies, warps, and bubbles?

“Dark matter” and “dinosaurs” are words you rarely hear together except perhaps in the playground, a fantasy gaming club, or some not-yet-released Spielberg movie. Dark matter is the elusive stuff in the Universe that interacts through gravity like ordinary matter,
but that doesn’t emit or absorb light. Astronomers detect its gravitational influence, but they literally don’t see it. Dinosaurs, on the other hand . . . I doubt I need to explain dinosaurs. They were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates from 231 to 66 million years ago.
Though both dark matter and dinosaurs are independently fascinating, you might reasonably assume that this unseen physical substance and this popular biological icon are entirely unrelated. And this might well be the case. But the Universe is by definition a single entity and in principle its components interact. This book explores a speculative scenario in which my collaborators and I suggest that dark matter might ultimately (and indirectly) have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaur.
Paleontologists, geologists, and physicists have shown that 66 million years ago, an object at least ten kilometers wide plummeted to Earth from space and destroyed the terrestrial dinosaurs, along with three-quarters of the other species on the planet. The object might have been a comet from the outer reaches of the Solar System, but no one knows why this comet was perturbed from its weakly bound, but stable, orbit.
Our proposal is that during the Sun’s passage through the midplane of the Milky Way—the stripe of stars and bright dust that you can observe in a clear night sky—the Solar System encountered a disk of dark matter that dislodged the distant object, thereby precipitating this cataclysmic impact. In our galactic vicinity, the bulk of the dark matter surrounds us in an enormous smooth and diffuse spherical halo.
The type of dark matter that triggered the dinosaurs’ demise would be distributed very differently from most of the elusive dark matter in the Universe. The additional type of dark matter would leave the halo intact, but its very different interactions would make it condense
into a disk—right in the middle of the Milky Way plane. This thin region could be so dense that when the Solar System passes through it, as the Sun oscillates up and down during its orbit through our galaxy, the disk’s gravitational influence would be unusually strong.
Its gravitational pull could be powerful enough to dislodge comets at the outer edge of the Solar System, where the Sun’s competing pull would be too weak to rein them back in. The errant comets would then be ejected from the Solar System or—more momentously—be redirected to hurtle toward the inner Solar System, where they might have the potential to strike the Earth.

To be a great literature translator, you first have to love your native language and have a deep knowledge in it.
Surely you need excellent knowledge of your source language, but not even being billingual is a success key to your profession, and holding a degree in translation does not necessarily mean you are ready to translate anything. And it's not in the cat tools either -although they are a tremendous help. At the end of the day, it all comes down to that if you are not an exceptionally strong writer in your target language, you will not be able to translate convincingly.
What makes a translation a gem and not just "good enough", is to be sound as if it never existed in a foreign language. You have to make the story yours, and adapt it in your language as if it was a story you were telling to someone you know.
Even before I was able to read, I was fascinated with words. I knew all the fairy tails by heart, and learned the alphabet by myself before I was ready for kindergarden. The love for books was there to stay. An avid reader and writer myself, I chose translation as a profession out of pure love for languages and writing. With this, I could have the best of both worlds. Being able to read stories of other writers and then deliver them to my own language.
