St. Martin this
MIGUEL ESTEVES CARDOSO Público 11/11/2015
It has been beautiful the summer of Saint Martin. After all it exists. In future years, when they say that it never existed there will always be an incorruptible who will rise up and will quieten the people asking "well then and 2015 ...?"

"Oh yes," they will nod their little heads, "that long weekend which entered into the following week to gain momentum ... that marvel ... what a pity there are no longer summers of St. Martin like that ..."

I have spent the last few days talking with local scholars who always assure me that the summers of St. Martin belong to the vast collection of enjoyable experiences that are no longer available from the time they were lads and that generally fall under the fatal aegis of " ah, that was in the good old days ... ".

"So this weather is not the weather of the St. Martin Summer?", I venture. "No ..." they falter, turning their backs on the dialogue, "... the days yes but the nights no ... there is no água-pé without cold and there is no St Martin without água-pé ..."

I learned the true summer of Saint Martin, to the contrary of this impostor wandering around, had torrid days and freezing nights. As in all these disagreements there is always an unspoken prejudice that there are two climates: one for those who work the land, at the mercy of the elements, and one for those who go there sauntering from their air conditioned cars.

On the other hand the chestnuts this year are exceptionally fat and tasty, and as they do not lie, they can have the last word: it's St. Martin, all right.
