Water is required for life. There is a lot of freshwater on our planet, but it is not always in the right place, of the right quality, at the right time. Human activity has a major impact on the water balance. Diverting rivers to irrigate cotton fields has destroyed the Aral Sea in Central Asia. In parts of India, groundwater is falling due to overexploitation from pumps and boreholes for agriculture. And glacial retreat in the Himalayas caused by climate change risks future summer drought in the populous regions downstream.
Meanwhile, water stored in ice affects the temperature of the Earth and is the key determinant of global sea level. Snow and ice are white, reflecting the sun’s rays back to space helping to keep the planet cooler. As the Arctic ice melts it is replaced by the darker ocean which absorbs yet more heat. These feedback effects make it urgent that we tackle climate change and attempt to lessen its effects on livelihoods around the world. The vast Greenland ice sheet is a relic of the last Ice Age, sustained by cooling caused by its vast depth and altitude. If it melted, it would not reform under today's climatic conditions. The ice sheet is melting, sea level is rising, and scientists predict that this process is unstoppable. Whatever we do, we will need to adapt to higher sea-levels.
Amidst this global climate and water crises we need to reduce our consumption of freshwater and the energy used to transport and process it. To do this we need to understand the hidden world of product lifecycle footprints and how and where manufacturers source their raw materials and make products. To cut our use of water, many of us would consider buying water efficient appliances such as a new dishwasher and washing machine or avoid running the tap as we clean our teeth. But we could make a far bigger impact by changing our shopping habits. It can take 17,000 litres of water to make one kilogram of chocolate, 15,000 for one kilogram of beef and 1,000 to produce one litre of milk. By comparison, soya milk only needs 300 litres. But not all water use is equally harmful. Rain-fed crops cause less harmful impact than those that rely on irrigation in semi-arid regions.
Industry and many manufacturing processes use large volumes of water. Levi Strauss calculated that each pair of jeans requires over 2,500 litres of water through growing cotton, manufacturing processes and washing them at home. They have introduced several water saving techniques to process cotton fibres, manufacture and dye jeans. Waterless ozone technology has replaced the optional and water intensive process of stone washing that makes jeans look worn before sale. Reducing water use and recycling water within manufacturing plants also reduces the chemicals used to treat water, energy to pump it to the plant, energy to heat water within the plant and the volume of wastewater to be treated. Despite these dramatic improvements in water productivity in the manufacturing process, the largest potential water reduction technique in the life cycle of jeans is to use recycled cotton rather than virgin cotton grown on irrigated land.
The carbon impact of clothes is more than just from manufacturing and retail. Consumers use even more energy at home to wash and dry their clothes. Mondays used to be washing day in the UK; now some families have their washing machine on every day, with every wash using water, energy and releasing thousands of plastic microfibres into our rivers. Proctor and Gamble calculated that 90% of the lifecycle carbon footprint of their washing powder arises when their customers wash clothes at home. This spurred them to develop a new powder that works equally well at lower water temperatures – you can now wash clothes at 30°C, saving energy at home. Of course, wearing clothes for longer before washing them will save even more.
The best solution is for consumers to be willing to pay more for higher quality and durable clothes, which allows them to then keep and wear clothes for longer. The retailer can supplement this by offering long guarantees, backed up with repair and refurbishment services. GRN Sportswear sells quality, sustainable sportswear for teams. Most of their raw materials are synthetic, from recycled sources or off-cuts. They avoid using mixed fibres, design their products to be durable and are exploring the potential to chemically recycle used clothes to become the raw material for new garments.
Another option for the fashion conscious - those who feel the need to wear different clothes when they go out to events - is to rent outfits from companies like H&M Group which you return to be cleaned and reused. As a final thought on clothing; it should be socially unacceptable for people, newspapers and social media to criticise anyone, friends or celebrities, for wearing the same clothes twice in public. Only in this way will we begin to reduce the impact of fast fashion on water and the environment.

Source text - English Capybaras (Hydrochoerushydrochaeris) are very common animals in the green areas of Curitiba. It is therefore important to understand how people who visit these areas understand and behave regarding the species. It is also essential to understand the relationship between users and the capybara and its implications for the species in this city’s parks. Thus, a structured questionnaire was prepared with 18 questions organized as follows: (a) user’s profile, (b) knowledge about the capybara and (c) user behavior influence on the presence of capybaras in urban parks. This questionnaire was applied with attendees of three parks (Barigui Park, Cambui Park and Iguaçu-Nautical Park) where there are capybara groups. The results were compared using Chi-square Test and indicated that the users:know the capybara and its story in the park, users also value the species and agree that the parks of Curitiba can be the habitat for capybara and wildlife in general. It is possible to infer from results that therelationship between humans and the capybara can be considered harmonious, this being one of the factors that help guarantee the species’ permanence in city parks. This information is of great value to the development of management and conservation measures for this species in urban areas.

Por isso é importante entender de que forma as pessoas que frequentam essas áreas compreendem e se comportam diante da espécie. É fundamental também compreender a relação entre os frequentadores e a capivara e suas implicações sobre a espécie nos parques da cidade. Para isso, foi elaborado um questionário estruturado com 18 questões organizadas em: (a) perfil dos usuários, (b) conhecimento sobre a capivara e (c) influência do comportamento dos usuários sobre a presença de capivaras em parques urbanos. Esse questionário foi aplicado aos frequentadores de três parques (Parque Barigui, Parque Cambuí e Parque Iguaçu-Náutico) onde existem grupos de capivaras. Os resultados foram comparados pelo Teste de Qui-quadrado e indicaram que os frequentadores: conhecem a capivara e sua história de vida no parque, apreciam a espécie e concordam que os parques de Curitiba podem ser habitat para a capivara e outros animais silvestres. A partir dos resultados pode-se inferir que existe uma relação harmônica entre o ser humano e a capivara, sendo esse um dos fatores que garantem a permanência da espécie nos parques da cidade. Essas informações são de grande valia para o desenvolvimento de medidas de manejo e conservação da espécie em espaços urbanos.

A complexidade inserida nela e as suas reestruturações revelam um quadro local, regional e até mesmo global muitas vezes incerto. No âmbito local pode-se citar, por exemplo, a maior ocorrência de enchentes relâmpago, ou flashfloods, em áreas urbanas. O relatório TEEB (2010) e Östberg (2013) citam o controle de enchentes como um dos principais serviços ecossistêmicos das árvores urbanas, e consideram este serviço ainda fracamente quantificado em muitos países, principalmente fora da América do Norte e Europa. Piracicaba ainda não possui dados desse tipo em quantidades suficientes para se tornar base da tomadas de decisões. O principal objetivo deste estudo é demonstrar a influência da cobertura do solo nas taxas de infiltração da água no solo, escoamento superficial e escoamento de base, fornecendo dados sobre influência da cobertura arbórea dentro do escopo da bacia do Piracicamirim. As categorias de cobertura do solo consideradas neste trabalho são as seguintes: Cobertura Arbórea, Cobertura Arbustiva, Cobertura Herbácea, Corpos d’água, Solo Impermeabilizado, e Solo Exposto. Dentro de 7 cenários diferentes, foram analisados os resultados das diferentes possibilidades de cobertura do solo na bacia do Piracicamirim, e também em uma microbacia urbana dentro de Piracicaba. Com estes cenários, foi possível estimar a influência das coberturas arbórea, arbustiva e herbácea nas taxas de infiltração e escoamento da água na bacia e na sub-bacia. Concluiu-se que as mudanças de cobertura de solo geraram diferenças significativas nas taxas de vazão, infiltração e escoamento, demonstrando a eficácia do aumento da permeabilidade e da cobertura arbórea no controle de picos de vazão na bacia e na sub-bacia. A presença da cobertura permeável (arbórea, arbustiva ou herbácea) representou queda nos picos de vazão, e a cobertura impermeável mostrou relação com aumento do escoamento superficial. Conclusivamente, em todos os cenários foi possível observar que as coberturas permeáveis são favoráveis aos processos de infiltração e escoamento de base, os quais são importantes no manejo sustentável de recursos hídricos. Os resultados deste estudo demonstram que é real a necessidade de planejamento do uso do solo com ênfase na manutenção da permeabilidade, e que esta é peça chave para conservação dos recursos hídricos. Seria interessante que estudos futuros pudessem refazer essas comparações utilizando modelos adaptados ao Brasil, para gerar dados mais confiáveis.
Translation - English Many consequences have been observed as a result of landscape modification by mankind. The complexity inserted in it and its restructuring reveal an uncertain framework, regionally and even globally. At the local level, for example, the higher incidence of flashfloods in urban areas show that Brazil is not prepared for climate change. Östberg (2013) mentioned flood control as a key ecosystem service of urban trees. The author considers this service as yet poorly quantified in many countries, especially outside North America and Europe. The city of Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, does not have enough data to sustain decision making on the subject. This study demonstrates the influence of land cover in water infiltration rates, surface runoff and base flow, using i-Tree (U.S. Forest Service modeling software). The aim is to provide data on the influence of tree cover within the scope of Piracicamirim watershed. The land cover categories considered in this work are: Tree cover, shrub cover, herbaceous cover, Water bodies, Impervious cover, and Bare Soil. Within 7 different scenarios that compare different rates of each category, the results were analyzed. With these scenarios, it was possible to estimate the influence of pervious and impervious cover rates in infiltration and waterflow. It was concluded that the soil cover changes have produced significant differences in waterflow, infiltration and runoff, demonstrating the effectiveness of increased permeability and tree cover in control of peak flows in the watershed. The presence of permeable cover (tree, shrub or herbaceous) was directly related to decrease in peak flows, which can help prevent flashfloods. The impervious coverage was related to increased runoff. Conclusively, in all scenarios it was observed that the permeable covers are favorable to infiltration processes and base flow, which are important in the sustainable management of water resources in the urban environment. The results of this study demonstrate that it is necessary for urban planning to focus on permeability, and that it is one of the key elements for water conservation.
