Het probleem: glastuinbouw vreet energie
Het energievraagstuk is één van de grootste uitdagingen binnen de glastuinbouw. Door de hoge gasprijs is het gebruik van een warmtekrachtkoppeling installatie (WKK) of een conventionele verwarmingsketel voor veel tuinbouwbedrijven niet meer rendabel. De energiekosten bedragen momenteel ongeveer 30% van de totale bedrijfskosten. Om de kassen op temperatuur te houden worden bovendien enorme hoeveelheden fossiele brandstoffen verstookt. Brandstoffen waarvan iedereen weet dat ze op zullen raken.
Zoektocht naar innovatieve toepassingen
De tuinbouwsector is al jaren op zoek naar oplossingen voor dit energievraagstuk.
Op verschillende manieren wordt geprobeerd niet alleen op kosten te besparen, maar ook duurzamer te produceren door het beperken van de hoeveelheid fossiele brandstoffen. Denk hierbij aan:
• Het gebruik van aardwarmte voor de verwarming van kassen.
• Het toepassen van technieken om warmteverlies te beperken, bijvoorbeeld met behulp van dubbele schermdoeken.
• Het gebruik van restwarmte.
De duurzame oplossing van WarmCO2
In Zeeuws Vlaanderen kwamen een aantal factoren bij elkaar. Chemische industrie en glastuinbouw lagen op een steenworp van elkaar. Daarnaast leefde de ambitie dit gebied grondig te verduurzamen. Het duurzame concept MUP, een Europees initiatief waarbij bedrijven gebruik maken van elkaars reststromen, paste prima bij die ambities.
Een unieke en verantwoorde oplossing kwam binnen handbereik: hoogwaardige restwarmte en zuivere rest CO2 uit de industrie gebruiken als grondstof voor de tuinbouw. Bovendien een voordelige oplossing want de prijs van restwarmte ligt ver onder die van aardgas bij gebruik van conventionele installaties. Daar komt bij dat de gasprijs een onzekere factor blijft.
De tuinders in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen hebben langjarige contracten met WarmCO2afgesloten en zijn nu verzekerd van een lage, vaste energieprijs voor een langere tijd.
Glastuinbouwgebied Zeeuws Vlaanderen: uniek in Nederland
Het tuinbouwgebied bij Westdorpe is gelegen in de Autrichepolder en de Smidsschorrepolder. Nagenoeg alle tuinbouwpercelen zijn verkocht en de tuinders gaan fasegewijs hun bedrijven uitbreiden. In 2019 zal hier in totaal 150 ha glas zijn verrezen. In het gebied worden tomaten, paprika’s en aubergines geteeld. De kassen in het gebied worden niet belicht. Een dergelijke duurzame opzet op deze schaal is uniek in Nederland!

The problem: greenhouse horticulture guzzles energy
The issue of energy use is one of the greatest challenges currently facing greenhouse horticulture. For many horticultural businesses, the use of a cogeneration plant (CHP) or a conventional boiler is no longer viable due to the high price of gas. Energy costs currently account for around 30% of total operating costs. In particular, huge volumes of fossil fuels are burned in order to maintain greenhouses at the correct temperature - fuel that everyone knows will one day run out.
The search for innovative solutions
The horticulture sector has long been seeking solutions to this pressing energy issue. Numerous attempts have been made not only to save on costs, but also to produce in a more sustainable manner by limiting fossil fuel consumption.
Examples include:
• The use of geothermal energy to heat greenhouses
• The application of techniques that reduce heat loss, such as the use of dual shading screens.
• The use of residual heat.
WarmCO2 the sustainable solution
A number of important factors came together in the Zeeuws Vlaanderen region. First of all, the chemical and horticultural industries were located only a stone's throw away from each other. There was also a keen ambition to make the area fully sustainable. And the sustainable concept, MUP - a European initiative whereby companies make reciprocal use of residual waste –happened to match that ambition perfectly.
Thus a unique and socially responsible solution was within reach: the recycling of high quality residual heat and pure residual CO2 from the manufacturing industry, as raw material for the horticultural industry. As the price of residual heat in conventional installations is significantly lower than that of natural gas, this is essentially a cost-effective solution. Particularly when the price of gas remains uncertain.
Horticulturists in the Zeeuws-Vlaanderen zone have agreed long-term contracts with WarmCO2 and are now assured of low fixed-price energy for the foreseeable future.
The horticultural area of Westdorpe is situated within the Autrichepolder and Smidsschorrepolder (reclaimed areas of land) in the Netherlands. Almost all available horticultural plots have been sold and the horticulturists are now busy expanding their businesses. It's anticipated that by 2019 a total of 150 hectares of land will be covered by greenhouses growing tomatoes, peppers and aubergines. None of the greenhouses in the area are illuminated – sustainable design on such a scale is utterly unique in the Netherlands!

Occult bloed in stoelgangstaal
Er gebeurt een test om te zien of er bloed in uw stoelgang aanwezig is. Dit noemt men een ‘fecaal occult bloed’-test. Voor u zal het van belang zijn dat u ten minste één week voordat de ‘fecaal occult bloed’-test plaatsvindt aspirine of NSAID’s vermijdt (NSAID’s zijn niet-steroïdale ontstekingsremmers, zoals ibuprofen; dat zijn geneesmiddelen die hoofdzakelijk gebruikt worden als behandeling voor een ontsteking, lichte tot matige pijn). Aspirine en NSAID’s kunnen immers de juiste beoordeling van de testuitslagen beïnvloeden (het is mogelijk dat de test ten onrechte positief is). Bespreek deze geneesmiddelen met uw studiearts. Uw studiearts zal u vragen gedurende 72 uur vóór de test geen ijzersupplementen, vitamine C evenals bepaalde fruitsoorten en groenten die peroxidase bevatten te vermijden (zoals pompelmoes, mierikswortel, suikermeloen, vijgen, broccoli, enz.). Uw studiearts zal u een lijst met voedingsmiddelen geven die u moet vermijden. Occult blood in stool sample
A test will be conducted to detect if blood is present in your stool. This is called a ‘faecal occult blood' test. It is important that you avoid aspirin or NSAIDs (NSAIDs are non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen; drugs that are predominantly used in the treatment of inflammatory, mild to moderate pain) for at least one week prior to the 'faecal occult blood' test taking place. Aspirin and NSAIDs may affect the correct evaluation of test results (it is possible that the test is falsely positive). Discuss these medications with your study doctor. Should you receive a positive result at any given moment, you must be retested at three different time intervals after every bowel movement approximately one month later. Een soort afwachtende houding, eerbiedig bijna. Dan de vraag, de vraag waar ik nog steeds graag op antwoord: waar merkte je het aan? Toch zit er een verborgen vraag in, een soort check. Als iemand mij vertelt, waaraan hij het eerste merkte dat hij alzheimer/kanker/depressie/ziektevanweetikveel had, ga je toch even checken of je dat soms ook hebt. Poeh gelukkig, nee, dat heb ik niet. Eerlijk is eerlijk, zo denk je weleens. Maar in het gesprek met je vrienden komt altijd een soort wending. Als ik een grap maak. Opluchting, pffff, gelukkig, ze doet nog vrij normaal. Je vrienden weten alleen nog niet helemaal zeker of ze wel over hun vakantie mogen vertellen. Alsof die vakantie belangrijker zou zijn dan parkinson. Goed nieuws: die vakantie IS belangrijker. Of dat je je huis hebt verbouwd. Of dat je kind een diploma haalt. Dat is toch waar je het voor moet doen? Doen wij ook thuis. Iets schilderen, heg snoeien, naar de Hema voor sokken, piano spelen. Werken, doen we ook gewoon. Kost iets meer moeite, maar omdat niemand ons geld komt brengen als we niet werken, werken we dus gewoon. Als ik dat allemaal vertel, als ik niet alleen de ellende, maar ook de gewone dingen deel, help ik anderen om mij te steunen. Want ze zijn bang, misschien nog wel banger dan ik.

Well, here’s the thing: that holiday IS more important. As are your latest home improvements. Or your child’s exam results. Talking about them is precisely what you should do! For we too, carry on just as before. Decorating, pruning the hedge, shopping for mundane items such as socks, playing the piano. Just as we still have to work. It might require a little more effort these days, but money doesn’t grow on trees and we still need to work. If I share this, the day-to-day things, and not just the darker moments, I believe that I can help others to support me better. Because they’re scared, perhaps even more scared than me.
