Bio

London-based Arabic linguist with extensive experience providing high quality Arabic-to-English translation of mainly Islamic historical and religious/Shari'a texts and newspaper/politics/social science/law related texts to academics, researchers, and journalists.

For example, in 2020-21 I undertook an extensive translation project for SOAS law lecturer Dr Jonathan Ercanbrac, translating lengthy sections from several Classical and Modern Islamic legal texts for his latest book on Islamic law. In 2018 I translated the 2006 Jordanian law of mediation forProfessor Hiro Aragaki of Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, who says, "Nikola translated the text in an efficient and timely manner and even helped finesse nuances and ambiguities in the original, really striving to get things exactly right".

I also completed a project in 2013 funded by Merton College Oxford, for which I translated and annotated Medieval Arabic chronicles (esp. Ibn Tulun's Mufakahat al-Khillan & Ibn Tawq's al-Ta'liq) for European History Lecturer Patrick Lantschner. He cites them extensively in, his article 'Fragmented Cities in the Later Middle Ages: Italy and the Near East Compared' (English Historical Review) and says, Nikola's "translations were really excellent and very meticulously done", his explanatory and historical notes "brilliant". (See this link for uploads of the translations I did for Lantschner: https://soas.academia.edu/NikolaSardelis, and see this link for the article: http://ehr.oxfordjournals.org/search?fulltext=sardelis&submit=yes&x=0&y=0).

In recent years I have completed several large translation projects of Islamic legal texts (both modern and pre-modern) for law academics, most recently for Jonathan Ercanbrack, senior lecturer in law at SOAS, and am currently working on a similar project, translating and analysing a large collection of Medieval Arabic fatwas and legal-theological tracts for a US-based academic.

I also offer MSA/Classical Arabic reading & grammar tuition to graduate students/researchers/journalists at very competitive rates and have access to classrooms at a university college in central London for the purpose.

I have an advanced, Arabic texts based MA in Islamic Studies (with Arabic Translation) - Distinction - from SOAS, a PG Cert Public Law, a LLB Law with International Relations (London) and a BA in Arabic with Islamic History (Oxford).

I am currently involved in a large Islamic texts translation project for a US based academic, while on a break from a part-time PhD at London SOAS on Islamic Political Theology and Constitutional Law in Egypt and Syria under the Mamluks and Ottomans, for which I am also translating into English several lengthy sections from a number of late Mediaeval Arabic legal, historical, and theological texts.
