Sales

Tractors: According to Anfavea, in march of 2015, domestic market sales of tractors closed at 4,123 units. This was a 5% drop in sales when compared with the same month in 2014 (4,342 units).

Upon researching the figures it can be seen that in total, 9,748 units have been sold within the country this year. This displays a 13.9% drop in sales when compared with the same period last year (11,323 units).

Harvesters: According to the results of a survey by Anfavea, 417 harvester units were sold within the Brazilian market in March 2015; a 40.5% drop in sales when compared with the same month in 2014 (700 units).

Figures from Anfavea’s survey show that to date, 1,174 harvester units have been sold this year within Brazil. Thus, with sales in the same period last year totalling 2,022 units, a reduction in sales of 41.9% can be seen.

- As per prior agreement, main manufacturers within the sector have revised predictions of sales of agricultural machines for 2015. Sales predictions now stand at 42,500 tractors and 4,500 harvesters.

Challenges in 2015

Since the dollar crossed the R$3 barrier in March, producers have found themselves having to do some calculations. Next summer, after almost one decade of expansion, they may be required to reduce the areas planted with grains.

If on one side the higher dollar unlocks business and helps the exportation of the crop that is been harvested, on the other side there is an increase in the costs of production. This paints a worrying picture of the next season 2015/16.

Even with a 55% drop in oil prices which, in theory would bring down the prices of some raw materials, the exchange rate is likely to cancel out this gain or may even increase prices (of raw materials).

According to experts, the great challenge for 2015 will be to predict dollar´s trend and the best way to protect yourself will be to eliminate the risk of volatility.

For the moment economists recommend barter, with payment being made via the exchange of products and methods of payment for raw materials to be decided during negotiations.

- A dollar to R$4 can mean higher values at the time of sale, but also higher production costs. On the other hand, the dollar retreating back to around R$ 3 would be synonymous with falling prices in the domestic market, but with production costs not necessarily falling as early or as quickly.
