Source text - English В этой квартире Михаил Афанасьевич Булгаков жил с осени 1921 до лета 1924 года. Доходный дом И.Д. Пигита после революции был национализирован и заселен рабочими. Вместе с писателем и его женой Т.Н. Лаппа в квартире № 50 жили 16 человек (в том числе знаменитая Аннушка). Здесь Булгаков написал роман «Белая гвардия», повести «Дьяволиада» и «Роковые яйца», множество очерков и фельетонов. В 2007 году здесь открылся музей М.А. Булгакова.
С 1911 г. в Саду работал цирк братьев Никитиных, упомянутый в повести «Собачье сердце» – именно туда доктор Борменталь водил Шарикова. В 1926-1936 гг. в Саду располагался Московский Мюзик-Холл (здание не сохранилось, на его месте построен Театр сатиры). Вероятно, Сад Аквариум и Мюзик-Холл стали прототипами Летнего сада и Варьете, где Воланд устроил знаменитый сеанс черной магии. Сад «Аквариум» Булгаков видел каждый день из окна коммунальной кухни кв. 50 дома 10 по Большой Садовой.
Translation - Russian This flat was home to Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov from the autumn of 1921 until the summer of 1924. Formerly a commercial apartment building held by the merchant Ilya Pigit, the property was nationalised post-revolution to accommodate workers. The writer shared this flat with his then wife Tatiana Lappa and a further 16 people (including Annushka, of Master and Margarita fame). Here Bulgakov would pen The White Guard and the short stories Diaboliad and The Fatal Eggs, as well as numerous essays and satirical pieces. The Mikhail Bulgakov Museum opened here in 2007.
In Heart of a Dog, Dr. Bormental takes Sharikov to The Nikitin Brothers’ Circus, which was open here from 1911. Between 1926 and 1936 the garden housed the Moscow Music Hall (the State Satire Theatre has since been built in its place). The Aquarium Gardens and Music Hall most likely gave Bulgakov the inspiration for the Summer Gardens and Variety Theatre where Woland would give his famous black magic performance in Master and Margarita. Bulgakov would have seen the Aquarium Gardens every day from the window of the shared kitchen at 10 Bolshaya Sadovaya, flat 50.

The driver had already shut them, but some people were forcing the closing doors open and trying to squeeze in. I am a translator/editor currently based in Leiden, the Netherlands. I am currently studying here, but have plenty of time left over to take on freelance work. My work recently has centred around finance, economics and marketing. My great interest in Baltic and Slavic languages, etymology, and historical linguistics, as well as a fascination with spoken idiom, have led me to adopt a conscientious and pedantic approach to all things translation.
I have been learning Russian since the age of 12 and have a deep understanding of the nuances each word contains, and of the capabilities of Russian morphology, which I have studied to great depth. Having worked as an English teacher to Russians for a number of years, I am also acutely aware of the typical pitfalls in rendering Russian speech into English and how to overcome them.
In my free time, I frequently engage in music-related activities - piano, composition, singing. I have an interest in all of the arts.
