Dutch to English: A Personal Immigration Story for the Red Star Line Museum

A family torn apart by an eye condition. Morris Moël was born in 1913 in Lubar, Ukraine. He came from a Jewish family. That same year his father departed for the United States with the intention of staying there permanently. The outbreak of World War I prevented anyone from hearing from him for eight years. Morris’ mother gave up hope of ever seeing him again. In 1921 the family learned from the HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) that their father had money on deposit in an account in Warsaw, Poland. Morris’ mother went there and made arrangements for her family to make the voyage to America. One year later in 1922 they took the ship Lapland from Antwerp. Upon arriving at Ellis Island it was determined that Morris’ sister Ita was not entirely cured of trachoma (an infectious eye disease). She was deported back to Antwerp for further treatment. Morris stayed with his mother and brothers for three weeks in quarantine on Ellis Island, afterward travelling by train from New York to join their Father in Huntington. It would take until 1927, following repeated treatment and a further deportation in 1923, before his sister was reunited with the rest of the family in West Virginia.
