Bab Berci kinézett az ablakon, és megcsóválta a fejét. Úgy nézem - mondta magának -, igen szomorú délutánom van. A válasszal sem sokáig késlekedett, fölkiáltott: Te oktondi, nem látod a csurgatott méz napfényt, a boldogan nyújtózkodó virágokat?! Mitol volna ez szomorú délután? Nem is tudom - válaszolta magának tétován Bab Berci, s tétovaságra volt is oka, hiszen az ilyen nyári délutánokon kívánja az ember, hogy álljon meg az ido, ne moccanjon semmi, és sokáig ringasson ez a megindító békesség. Ez igaz, de valami mégis hiányzik ebbol a csodadélutánból. Bab Berci vadul gondolkozott, mi hiányzik. Erosen gyanakszom - mondta magának -, az a baj, hogy ez a csodadélután nem ér a szívemig. Úgy bizony! Csak a borömig ér. S belül meg emészto, hervasztó köd gomolyog, sistereg odabent a bánat. Igen. Mert volt már nekem olyan délutánom, amikor benn a szívemben nagy ragyogás volt, idekinn meg ködöket hajkurászott a szél, bánatos eso szemerkélt, s én fölkiáltottam: Micsoda gyönyöru délután! Ha lett volna ott valaki, bizonyára megrovóan rám néz, és azt mondja: Eszed tokja! Mert, ugye, nem láthat bele a szívembe. Így meg, hogy nem volt ott senki, különösen nem láthatott bele.
- Állapítsuk meg - mondta hangosan Bab Berci -, hogy a délutánok csodásságát illetoen egyáltalán nem közömbös, hogy mi van az ember szívében. Ha ragyog az ember szíve, egy pocsék délután is lehet gyönyöru, ha meg az ember szíve olyan, mint most az enyém, akkor süthet hét ágra a nap, lehet mézszínu a világ, csak pocsék délután az.
De mitol? Mi az ördögtol, amikor semmiféle sérelem nem ért, nem fáj semmim, emésztésem, étvágyam példás, jól alszom, jól ébredek... ajaj... valami bánat úszkál itt a levegoben, valami nagy-nagy bánat.
- Jajajajaj - hallatszott ekkor szívet tépon, mintha maga a levegoben úszkáló bánat sóhajtott volna.
- Jól éreztem! - kiáltott felélénkülve Bab Berci, és a hang irányába trappolt.
A patak partján akadt rá az illetore. Meglehetosen kacifántos illeto volt, gólyalábú, szögletes vállú meszelonyél.
- Mondd, te kedves hosszúkás ember - szólította meg -, te árasztod magadból a szomorúságot?
- Jaj nekem, jaj nekem - riadt meg a meszelonyél, és eltakarta arcát.
- Ne jajongj - szólt rá Bab Berci -, elromlik toled ez a szép délután.
- Ne haragudj - mondta az idegen -, de azt hittem, hogy errefelé nem lakik senki. Azért jöttem ide, hogy ne szomorítsak senkit a bánatommal.
- Olyan nagy a bánatod? - kérdezte részvevoen Bab Berci.
Az idegen lógó orral bólogatott.
- Nem tudnánk rajta közös erovel segíteni? - reménykedett
Bab Berci, de az idegen ahelyett, hogy hálásan nézett volna rá, bosszúsan ráncolta a homlokát.
- Nuuszi Kuuszi vagyok - mondta jelentoségteljesen.
- Én meg Bab Berci - mondta Bab Berci.
- Jól értetted a nevemet? - kérdezte fürkészo tekintettel a másik.
- Jól hát - mondta Bab Berci -, azt mondtad, hogy te vagy Nuuszi Kuuszi.
- Na és?
- Mit na és?
- Sose hallottad ezt a nevet?
Bab Berci gondterhelten meredt maga elé. Lehet, hogy ez a bánata - gondolta magában -, hogy még senki sem hallotta a nevét, vagy ha hallotta is, azonnal elfelejtette.
- Hát izé... - mondta - lehet, hogy hallottam... talán akkor, amikor az a nagy szél fújt... Igen, akkor hallottam. Azt fütyülte a szél, hogy nuuuuuuszikuuuszikuuuuszinuuszi... így valahogy. Nem tudtam, hogy rólad van szó.
- Pedig biztosan rólam beszélt... látod, már a szél is. O is az én égig éro bánatomat fütyörészi, pletykálja, szellozteti.
- Az istenért, miféle égig éro bánatod van neked?
- Tudd meg, hogy én nem akármelyik Nuuszi Kuuszi vagyok (ajaj, gondolta Bab Berci, ez azt képzeli, hogy ez a szélfújta név a leggyakoribb a világon!), hanem a varázsló Nuuszi Kuuszi.
Bab Berci fejébol ezen nyomban elpárologtak a tiszteletlen gondolatok, nagyra tátotta száját, elkerekítette a szemét, révült csodálattal bámulta a langaléta Nuuszi Kuuszit.
- Varázsló vagy? - kérdezte áhítattal.
- Az - mondta Nuuszi Kuuszi, és egyúttal legörbült a szája, a szemét elfátyolozták a könnyek.
- Akkor meg mit szomorkodsz?! - kiabált Bab Berci. - Kell neked ennél nagyobb boldogság? Tudsz varázsolni! Haha, még hogy szomorúság?! Mit tudsz varázsolni? - kérdezte mohón.
- Mindent - hüppögte a langaléta, és mutatóujjával egy könnycseppet birizgált a szeme sarkában.
- Komolyan mondod? Ide tudsz varázsolni egy tigrist, egy almát vagy egy harapófogót?
Milyen marhaságok jutnak eszembe - korholta magát Bab Berci -, még hogy harapófogó!
- Mindent - ismételte meg szomorúan Nuuszi Kuuszi -, hogyha például harapófogót akarsz, akkor figyelj...
- Állj - kiáltott Bab Berci. - Nem harapófogót akarok.
- Tulajdonképpen teljesen mindegy, hogy mit akarsz - mondta csüggedten Nuuszi Kuuszi, de Bab Berci rá se hederített.
- Fagylaltot is tudsz varázsolni?
- Tudok hát - mondta reménytelenül Nuuszi Kuuszi.
- Epret is, málnát is, csokoládét is?
- Vaníliát, puncsot, birsalmát, amit akarsz. Mindenféle fagylaltot tudok varázsolni.
- Nagyszeru - mondta Bab Berci -, akkor varázsolj nekem egy epres... Nem! Egy epres-csokoládés... azazhogy egy epres-csokoládés-vaníliás-birsalmás... Tudod mit?! Egy mindenesfagylaltot varázsolj nekem.
- Ajajaj! - mondta Nuuszi Kuuszi.
- Ez most a varázsige, vagy csak sopánkodsz?
- Még csak sopánkodtam... Arra kérlek, nagyon gyorsan nyald meg majd a fagylaltodat! És most figyelj, jön a varázsige. - Széttárta a karját. - Nuszikuszikuszinuszi, legyen Bab Berci kezében egy mindenesfagylalt!
Egy sissenés, egy szisszenés, egy sussanás, egy szusszanás - na és még olyan gyönyöruséget nem láttál! (Legalábbis fagylaltban.) Egy bohócsapkányi tölcsérben öklömnyi gombócok garmadája. Fehérek, halványzöldek, pirosak, sárgák, lilásak, barnák.
- Hahá! - ordított diadalmasan Bab Berci. - Ezt nézzétek meg! - és kinyújtotta a nyelvét, hogy megnyalja a csodálatos mindenesfagylaltot, de a mindenesfagylalt abban a minutában - volt, nincs - eltunt, akár a kámfor.
Bab Berci a levegobe nyalt, majd megkövülten bámulta a kezét, vagyis hogy inkább a mindenesfagylalt hult helyét bámulta. Ámbátor - fagylaltról lévén szó - inkább azt kellene mondani, hogy a mindenesfagylalt melegült helyét bámulta, de ne cifrázzuk, elég baja van szegény Bab Bercinek anélkül is.
- Te átkozott himpellér! Mit tettél a csodák csodája mindenesfagylaltommal?! Szégyelld magad, Nuuszi Kuuszi! - kiabált Bab Berci sértodötten, és hátat fordítva a hórihorgas varázslónak, elindult hazafelé.
De néhány lépés után megállt, mert meghallotta a szerencsétlen varázsló bánatos nyöszörgését.
- Na látod, Bab Berci, na látod - ezt nyöszörögte.
Aha - gondolta Bab Berci -, hát ez a bánata bibéje! Visszafordult, elillant a haragja, szánakozva nézte a meggyötört Nuuszi Kuuszit.
- Én figyelmeztettelek - nyöszörgött az tovább -, hogy gyorsan nyald meg a fagylaltodat, de te nyalás helyett diadalordítoztál.
- Aha - mondta most már hangosan Bab Berci -, hát ezért mondtad, hogy mindegy: harapófogó vagy fagylalt.
Nuuszi Kuuszi szaporán bólogatott, és hálásan nézett Bab Bercire, hogy íme, szavak nélkül is megértette, mi az o nagy bánata. Mert dehogyis akarta o eltüntetni Bab Berci csodás mindenesfagylaltját. Éppen hogy o lett volna a legboldogabb, ha Bab Berci szép nyugodtan elnyalogathatja azt a fagylaltóriást. De mit tegyen, ezzel van megverve, hogy amit varázsol, az egy szempillantásig létezik csak, s azon nyomban el is tunik.
- Hát varázsló vagyok én?! - sírt Nuuszi Kuuszi, most már nem tartotta vissza a könnyeit, potyogtak, mint a záporeso. - Kutyagumi vagyok, nem varázsló!
- Nana, nana, nyugalom, pajtikám - lapogatta a hátát barátságosan Bab Berci -, gondold csak meg, hány ember boldog lenne, ha ennyit is tudna varázsolni. Bukfencet vetne örömében, táncolna, ugrálna. Döngetné a mellét.
- Persze - mondta csendesen Nuuszi Kuuszi, és megtörölte a szemét -, ha nem varázsló volnék, persze hogy bukfenceznék, táncolnék, ugrálnék, és döngetném a mellem ennyitol is. De az a baj, hogy én varázsló vagyok... akkor pedig... - elhallgatott, és újra csak záporeso módjára rázendített.
- Ne sírj - mondta Bab Berci, de közben neki is elcsuklott a hangja, fészkelodni kezdett egy könnycsepp a szeme sarkában, hogyne fészkelodött volna, amikor egy ilyen kacifántosan szerencsétlen varázslóval hozta össze a sors. Egymás nyakába borultak, és sírt Bab Berci is, mint a záporeso.
- Nagyon kedves toled, hogy együtt sírsz velem - szipogta Nuuszi Kuuszi.
- Szóra sem érdemes - szipogta vissza Bab Berci -, amúgy is olyan szomorú délutánom volt.
Hüppögtek, zokogtak. És szó, ami szó, a közös sírástól könnyebbedni kezdett a szívük. Nocsak! Lehet, hogy akik ilyen szépen tudnak együtt sírni, azok késobb majd ki is találnak valami okosat?
Translation - English Benny Bean weeps with Nuusi Kuusi
Benny Bean looked out the window and shook his head. "I think I'm having a very gloomy afternoon," he said to himself. But he immediately corrected himself and shouted, "You fool, don't you see the sunshine, golden like flowing honey, and the flowers stretching contentedly? How could this be a gloomy afternoon?" "I'm not sure," Benny Bean answered himself with some hesitation. And he had good reason to hesitate, because balmy summer afternoons like this make us want time to stand still, all movement to stop, and this profound tranquility to keep us lulled forever. Still, something was missing from this magical afternoon. Benny Bean searched his mind trying to think what was missing. "I strongly suspect," he said to himself, "that the problem is this magical afternoon can’t reach my heart. That's it! It can only reach my skin, while inside there is a smoldering, sputtering gloom hidden in a thick, intense, withering fog. On the other hand, I can remember afternoons when there was a warm, bright glow inside, in my heart, even as the wind was chasing tufts of fog outside. A sad drizzle was falling, and I still shouted, 'What a beautiful afternoon!' Anyone who heard me would have frowned and said, 'You must be kidding!' Because, you see, no one can see what's in my heart, especially when I'm all alone."
"So then," Benny Bean said aloud, "as far as the magical nature of afternoons is concerned, one can only conclude that one mustn’t ignore what’s in the heart. If the heart is glowing, even a wretched afternoon can be beautiful, and if the heart is heavy, like mine is now, then the sun can shine as brightly as it wants to and the world can be the color of molten honey – the afternoon will still be miserable."
"But why? Why am I miserable when I haven't been offended by anyone or anything, I’ve no aches and pains, my digestion and appetite are in exemplary order, I sleep well, I wake up cheerfully.… Uh-oh.… There’s some kind of sorrow floating in the air; a deep, bottomless sorrow."
"Boo-hoo-hoo," he heard suddenly, as if the sorrow floating in the air had let out a heart-rending sigh.
"I was right! I could feel it!" Benny Bean exclaimed full of enthusiasm and dashed off in the direction of the sound.
He found the stranger at the brook. An odd-looking man, square-shouldered and tall, like a beanpole on stilts.
"If you please, towering sir," Benny Bean said in the way of a greeting, "are you the source of this sorrow?"
"Dear me, dear me!" The beanpole covered his face apprehensively.
"Stop whining," Benny Bean scolded him. "You’re spoiling this beautiful afternoon."
"I'm sorry," the stranger said, "but I thought no one lived around here. I came here because I didn't want to infect anyone with my sorrow."
"Do you have such a deep sorrow?" Benny Bean asked sympathetically.
Looking downcast, the stranger nodded.
"Couldn't we do something about it together?" Benny Bean asked hopefully, but instead of giving him a thankful look, the stranger frowned.
"My name is Nuusi Kuusi," he said pointedly.
"And I’m Benny Bean," Benny Bean said.
"Did you hear what my name was?" the other asked, giving him a penetrating look.
"Of course I did," Benny Bean said. "You said you were Nuusi Kuusi."
"And?"
"What do you mean?"
"You mean you’ve never heard my name before?"
Benny Bean peered into the air, worried. "This may very well be what's bothering him," he thought to himself. "Perhaps he’s sad because no one has ever heard his name, or because people forgot it as soon as they heard it."
"Hmmm, well...," he said, "I might have heard it before.... You know, once there was this big wind.… Yes, that's when I heard it! As the wind blew, I heard it say 'nuuuuuusikuuusikuuuusinuusi...' or something like that. I didn't know it was you."
"It must have been.… See, even the wind goes around whistling, prattling and chattering about my bottomless sorrow."
"Come on, tell me, what is this bottomless sorrow you are talking about?"
"Let me tell you that I am not just any old Nuusi Kuusi." ("Oh no," thought Benny Bean, "this fellow thinks that his windblown name is the most common one in the world!") "I am the wizard Nuusi Kuusi."
When he heard this, Benny Bean instantly abandoned all irreverent thoughts. His chin dropped, his eyes opened wide, and he stared at the gangly Nuusi Kuusi in respectful admiration.
"You’re a wizard?" he asked reverently.
"I am," Nuusi Kuusi said, but even as he said so, the corners of his mouth curved down and his eyes clouded with tears.
"If that's the case, what are you so sad about?" Benny Bean shouted. "Do you want more happiness? You can do magic! Sadness, indeed! What kind of magic can you do?" he asked eagerly.
"All kinds," the beanpole sobbed and rubbed a tear in the corner of his eye with his index finger.
"Are you serious? Can you make a tiger appear, or an apple, or a pair of pliers?" ("Good grief, how stupid I am," Benny Bean scolded himself, "a pair of pliers, indeed!")
"All kinds," Nuusi Kuusi repeated sadly. "If you want a pair of pliers, for example, pay attention.…"
"Stop!" Benny Bean shouted. "I don't want a pair of pliers!"
"Actually, it doesn't really matter what you want," Nuusi Kuusi said dejectedly, but Benny Bean didn't pay any attention.
"Can you conjure up ice cream?"
"Of course I can," Nuusi Kuusi said hopelessly.
"Strawberry, raspberry, chocolate?"
"Vanilla, rum punch, quince, whatever you want. I can conjure up any kind of ice cream."
"Great!" Benny Bean said. "In that case, conjure up some strawberry... No! Some strawberry-chocolate ... actually, strawberry-chocolate-vanilla-quince.… You know what?! Conjure up some every-flavor ice cream."
"Dear me!" Nuusi Kuusi said.
"Is this a magic spell, or are you still whining?"
"I'm still whining.… Please, make sure you lick your ice cream very quickly. And now pay attention, here comes the magic spell." He spread out his arms. "Nusikusikusinusi, let Benny Bean have an every-flavor ice cream cone in his hand!"
A whoosh and a buzz, a huff and a puff, and lo and behold, you have never seen anything this beautiful! (At least as far as ice cream goes.) An ice cream cone as big as a birthday hat, full of fist-sized scoops. White, light green, red, yellow, purple and brown.
"Yippee!" Benny Bean shouted triumphantly. "Just look at that!" He stuck out his tongue to lick the wondrous every-flavor ice cream, but at that very moment, the every-flavor ice cream cone vanished into thin air.
Benny Bean licked the air. He stared in disbelief at his hand, or rather at the thin air into which the every-flavor ice cream cone had vanished.
"You miserable trickster! What have you done to my amazing every-flavor ice cream cone?! You should be ashamed of yourself, Nuusi Kuusi!" Benny Bean yelled. Deeply insulted, he turned his back on the leggy wizard and started on his way home.
But he stopped after just a few steps because he heard the miserable wizard wailing forlornly.
"See, Benny Bean, see?" he whimpered.
"Aha!" Benny Bean thought. "So this is what he’s so sad about!" He turned around, looked at the dejected Nuusi Kuusi, and his anger flew away.
"I told you to lick your ice cream very quickly," the wizard continued to whimper, "but you were more interested in yelling triumphantly."
"So!" Benny Bean said out loud. "This is why you said it didn't matter if I wanted ice cream or a pair of pliers!"
Nuusi Kuusi nodded a few times rapidly, looking at Benny Bean. He was grateful that Benny Bean understood without words why he was so sad. Far be it from him to make Benny Bean's wondrous every-flavor ice cream cone disappear! In fact, he would have been the happiest man on earth if Benny Bean had been able to take his time savoring his gigantic ice cream cone. But what could he do when his curse was that whatever he conjured up would exist only for a moment and then disappear as soon as it had appeared?
"You call this a wizard?" Nuusi Kuusi wept. He no longer tried to hold back his tears, which fell copiously. "I'm a big nothing, not a wizard!"
"Now, now, calm down," Benny Bean said, patting the wizard on the back, comforting him. "Just think how many people would be delighted to be able to do this much magic. They’d do somersaults, they would dance, they would jump up and down for joy and pound their chests."
"Sure," Nuusi Kuusi said quietly and wiped his eyes. "If I weren't a wizard, I’d also do somersaults, dance, or jump up and down for joy and pound my chest if I could do this much magic. But the problem is that I am a wizard, and.…" He broke off and started sobbing again.
"Don't cry," Benny Bean said, but even as he said it, his voice cracked, and a tear began squirming in the corner of his eye. And it kept on squirming, because he had come upon such an odd-looking and forlorn wizard. The two of them flung their arms around each other, and Benny Bean started to cry like a baby, too.
"It's very nice of you to cry with me," Nuusi Kuusi sniffled.
"Don't mention it," Benny Bean sniffled back. "I was having a very gloomy afternoon anyway."
And so they sobbed and wept. And guess what? As they cried together, their hearts began to lighten. And who knows? When people can weep together so heartily, they might be able to come up with something clever once they are done crying.
