Source text - English He subdivides the functions of the psyche, in more or less Aristotelian fashion, into the „vegetative“ (its autonomic physical functions), the „sentient“ (perception, appetite, locomotion), and the „rational“ (memory, imagination, and reason or intellect). But he enlarges significantly a suggestion of „the Philosopher“ (as he often calls Aristotle) that there are two kinds of intellect. The functions of the first, or „possible intellect,“ are understanding, judgment, and reasoning concering our perceptions; the functions of the sedond, or „agent intellect“, are to abstract ideas or concepts from our perceptions and to know, through faith, those other truths, such as the mystery of the Trinity, that cannot be known through reason.

Významně však rozšiřuje představu „Filozofa“ (jak často nazýval Aristotela), že existují dva druhy intelektu. Funkcí prvního neboli „potenciálního intelektu“ je chápání, úsudek a myšlení týkající se našeho vnímání; funkcí druhého neboli „hybného intelektu“ je odvozování ideí neboli pojmů od našich vjemů a prostřednictvím víry přijetí dalších skutečností, jako je například mysterium nejsvětější Trojice, které nemůžeme poznat rozumem.

Source text - English If this is true, however, it seems plausible that German resistance to liberalism is based upon a parallel misapprehension. Germans do not grasp the social bonds which, for Anglo-Americans, are implicit in the practice of the individual. The distinctive invention of liberal societies is not individual but the corporation; and, beyond that, a rich multiplication of associations of many varied kinds. The actual texture of life in liberal societies is highly associative and quetly ordered by law and civic consciousness. Perhaps Anglo-Americans také such things so much for granted that they do not feel the need to mention them. Still, the Anglo-American concept of „association“ is significantly different from the German concept of „solidarity“. The former seeks to highlight the realm of the person, the latter the realm of the common good.
Translation - Czech Pokud je to však pravda, potom se zdá být přijatelná domněnka, že německý odpor vůči liberalismu se zakládá na paralelním nepochopení. Němci nechápou sociální vazby, které jsou pro Angloameričany skryté v praxi jednotlivce. Příznačnou ideou liberálních společností není jednotlivec, nýbrž společenství a vedle toho ještě značný počet sdružení nejrůznějšího založení. Skutečný charakter života v liberálních společnostech je vysoce asociativní a neformálně uspořádaný zákony a občanským svědomím. Angloameričané možná berou tyto záležitosti natolik jako samozřejmost, že necítí potřebu se o nich zmiňovat. Angloamerické pojetí „asociace“ je nicméně výrazně odlišné od německého pojetí „solidarity“. To první se snaží zdůraznit sféru člověka, to druhé sféru obecného blaha.
