I speak in the present tense because for us time does not exist, only space. And because it seems like only yesterday.
The one tribal custom I did not follow was that of having my man by my side when Athena was born. The midwives came to me even though they knew I had slept with a gadje, a foreigner. They loosened my hair, cut the umbilical cord, tied various knots and handed it to me. At that point, tradition demands that the child be wrapped in some item of the father's clothing; he had left a scarf which reminded me of his smell and which I sometimes pressed to my nose so as to feel him close to me, but now that perfume would vanish for ever.
I wrapped the baby in the scarf and placed her on the floor so that she would receive energy from the Earth. I stayed there with her, not knowing what to feel or think; my decision had been made.
The midwives told me to choose a name and not to tell anyone what it was- it could only be pronounced once the baby was baptised. They gave me the consecrated oil and the amulets I must hang around her neck for the two weeks following her birth. One of them told me ton to worry, the whole tribe was responsible for my child and although I would be butt of much criticism, this would soon pass. They also advised me not to go out between dusk and dawn because the tsinvari ( Editor's note: evil spirits) might attack us and take possession of us, and from then on our lives would be a tragedy.
A week later, as soon as the sun rose, I went to an adoption centre in Sibiu and placed her on the doorstep, hoping that some charitable person would take her in. As I was doing so, a nurse caught me and dragged me inside. She insulted me in every way she could and said that they were used to such behaviour but that there was always someone watching and I couldn't escape so easily from the responsibility of bringing a child into the world.
'Although, of course, what else would one expect from a gipsy! Abandoning your own child like that!'

Το μόνο φυλετικό έθιμο που δεν ακολούθησα είναι να έχω τον άνδρα μου δίπλα μου όταν γεννήθηκε η Athena. Οι μαίες ήρθαν κοντά μου παρ’όλο που ήξεραν πως είχα κοιμηθεί με ένα “gadje”, έναν ξένο. Μου έλυσαν τα μαλλιά, έκοψαν τον ομφάλιο λώρο, έδεσαν διάφορους κόμπους και μου την παρέδωσαν. Ως αυτό το σημείο, η παράδοση απαιτεί το παιδί να είναι τυλιγμένο σε κάποιο κομμάτι από τα ρούχα του πατέρα. Μου έδωσαν το καθαγιασμένο λάδι και τα φυλακτά που έπρεπε να κρεμάσω στο λαιμό της για τις επόμενες δύο εβδομάδες από τη γέννησή της. Μια από αυτές μου είπε να μην ανησυχώ, όλη η φυλή ήταν υπεύθυνη για το παιδί μου και παρ’όλο που θα ήμουν αιτία για μεγάλο σχολιασμό, αυτό θα περνούσε σύντομα. Επίσης με συμβούλευσαν να μην βγαίνω ανάμεσα στο σούρουπο και την αυγή επειδή ίσως τα “tsivari” ( σημείωση του συντάκτη: κακά πνεύματα) να μας επιτίθεντο και να μας κατελάμβαναν, και από τότε και στο εξής οι ζωές μας θα ήταν μια τραγωδία.
Μια εβδομάδα αργότερα, μόλις ξημέρωσε, πήγα σε ένα κέντρο υιοθεσιών στο Sibiu και την τοποθέτησα στο κεφαλόσκαλο, ελπίζοντας πως κάποιος φιλάνθρωπος θα την περιμάζευε. Και καθώς το έκανα, με έπιασε μια νοσοκόμα και με έσυρε μέσα. Jamais frustration ne fut plus grande que celle que j'ai éprouvée dans cette pièce insolite, avant-dernière étape d'un reve vieux de trois ans. J'aurais pu pleurer, j'aurais pu laisser T-Bag me trancher la gorge avec sa lame, apportée comme ultime assurance de son passage. Cela n'aurait rien changé. Accéder à l'infirmerie était impossible. Rejoindre Linc qui se trouvait à moins de trois mètres de moi n'était plus qu'une illusion. Tout près du but, après avoir surmonté toutes ces épreuves, j'avais échoué, à cause du zèle d'un homme chargé de faire le ménage... Pendant une seconde, j'ai songé à rester là, à attendre qu'un maton me découvre et se rendre compte que j'étais en train de m'évader. Comme le disait Sucre, j'en aurais pris pour quinze ans. Mon frère allait etre exécuté dans quelques heures, et je ne pouvais plus rien pour lui.
C'est Westmorland qui m'a ramené à la raison et m' a convaincu que nous devions retourner dans la salle de repos. Comme si rien ne s'était passé. Le vieil homme est le premier à glisser le long de la corde. Il disparait dans les ténèbres de l'ancient système d'égout, puis c'est le tour de C-Note et celui de T-Bag, qui me regarde comme si je venais de tuer ce qu'il lui reste de famille. Sucre plonge à son tour, et je peux lire toute lq désolation qui contracte son visage.
Je passe le dernier. Je me contente de suivre mes compagnons, sans en avoir vraiment envie. Je songe à Lincoln, qui est dans la salle de soins de l'infirmerie. J'imagine la détresse qu'il doit éprouver à cet instant. Tous ses espoirs de survie qui s'envolent en un instant.
De retour dans la salle de reois des gardiens, personne n'ose dire un mot. Nous recouvrons le trou, avec le tableau d'honneur des matons et replaçons machinalement le tapis dessus.
Nous regardons le bout de nos chaussures, quand Bellick vient s'assurer qu'il ne nous a punis pour rien. Le capitaine s'apprete à rentrer chez lui, mais en bon chien de garde, il ne peut s'empecher de venir nous flairer une dernière fois.
-Vous avez passé tout ce temps, ici, à ne rien foutre?, s'emporte Bellick.
-La pièce est encore humide, Boss. On n'a rien pu faire, explique C-Note, en tentant de sourire.
-C'est pas comme si on faisait un pique-nique, renchérit Sucre.
-Bande de fainéants de taulards! Bons à rien!
Un marteau à la main, j'avance vers le capitaine. Un court instant, je pense à lui défoncer le crane. Je n'ai plus rien à perdre.
-Tu as quelque chose à dire, Schofield?
'Oui' pense-je, 'je me demande la tete que tu ferais si je te l'écrasais avec ce putain de marteau.'
-Vas y, je t'écoute, répète-t-il avec le meme ton arrogant.
Je pose mon marteau sur la table et je baisse les yeux. Sans doute parce que, au fond de moi, je veux croire que tout n'est pas encore perdu. Parce qu'il reste un peu plus de vingt-quatre heures, et qu'une autre issue est peut-etre envisageable.
Bellick appelle un des gardiens affectés aux rondes de nuit et lui ordonne de nous raccompagner au bloc A.
-Bougez-vous, bande d'incapables!, guele-t-il, avant de disparaitre vers le parking.

Ποτέ η απελπισία δεν ήταν πιο μεγάλη από αυτή που ένοιωσα σε αυτό το ασυνήθιστο κομμάτι, το προτελευταίο βήμα ενός παλιού τρίχρονου ονείρου. Θα έπρεπε να μπορούσα να κλάψω, θα έπρεπε να μπορούσα να αφήσω τον T-Bag να μου κόψει το λαιμό με τη λεπίδα του, που την έφερε σαν έσχατη εξασφάλιση για το πέρασμά του. Αυτό δε θα άλλαζε τίποτα. Όπως έλεγε ο Sucre, θα μου εξασφάλιζε δεκαπέντε επιπλέον χρόνια. Στο βάθος, δεν είχα τίποτα άλλο να ελπίζω. Ο αδερφός μου θα εκτελούνταν σε λίγες ώρες, και δεν μπορούσα να κάνω τίποτα άλλο γι’άυτόν.
Είναι ο Westmorland που με επανέφερε στη λογική και μ’επεισε ότι έπρεπε να επιστρέψουμε στην αίθουσα ανάπαυσης. Σα να μην είχε συμβεί τίποτα. Ο ηλικιωμένος άνδρας ήταν ο πρώτος που γλίστρησε στο μακρύ σχοινί. Εξαφανίστηκε μέσα στο σκοτάδι του παλαιού αποχετευτικού συστήματος, μετά ήταν η σειρά του C-Note και αυτή του T-Bag, που με κοίταζε σα να πήγαινα να σκοτώσω ότι είχε απομείνει από την οικογένειά του. Ο Sucre βούτηξε με τη σειρά του, και μπορώ να διαβάσω όλη τη λύπη που αντανακλά στο πρόσωπό του.
Περνάω τελευταίος. Ευχαριστιέμαι να ακολουθώ την συντροφιά μου, χωρίς να το έχω διάθεση. Σκέφτομαι το Lincoln που είναι μέσα στην αίθουσα θεραπείας του ιατρείου. Φαντάζομαι την απόγνωση που πρέπει να αισθάνθηκε εκείνη την στιγμή. Όλες του οι ελπίδες επιβίωσης να εξανεμίζονται σε μια στιγμή.
Κατά την επιστροφή στην αίθουσα ανάπαυσης των φρουρών, κανείς δεν τόλμησε να πεί μια λέξη. Ξανακαλύπτουμε την τρύπα με τον πίνακα τιμής των δεσμοφυλάκων και επανατοποθετούμε μηχανικά από πάνω το χαλί.
Κοιτάμε τον πάτο των παπουτσιών μας, όταν ο Bellick έρχεται να επιβεβαιώσει ότι δε μας τιμώρησε για το τίποτα. Ο αστυνόμος ετοιμάζεται να επιστρέψει σπίτι του, αλλά σαν καλό σκυλί-φύλακας, δεν μπορεί να αντισταθεί να έρθει να μας μυρίσει μια τελευταία φορά.
- Μείνατε όλη αυτή την ώρα εδώ, για να μην κάνετε τίποτα; Είπε θυμωμένα ο Bellick.
- Το μέρος είναι ακόμα υγρό, αφεντικό. Δεν μπορούσαμε να κάνουμε τίποτα, εξήγησε ο C-Note, προσπαθώντας να χαμογελάσει.
- Δεν είναι ότι κάναμε και πικ-νικ, πρόσθεσε ο Sucre
- Ομάδα τεμπέληδων απατεώνων! Καλοί για τίποτα!
Με ένα σφυρί στο χέρι πλησιάζω τον αστυνόμο. Ένα σύντομο λεπτό σκέφτομαι να του σπάσω το κεφάλι. Δεν έχω τίποτα άλλο να χάσω.
- Θές να πείς κάτι Schofield;
« Ναι» σκέφτηκα εγώ, « αναρωτιέμαι πως θα ήταν το κεφάλι σου αν στο έσπαγα με αυτό το παλιοσφυρί.»
- Εμπρός, σε ακούω, επανέλαβε εκείνος με τον ίδιο υπεροπτικό τόνο.
Ακουμπάω το σφυρί μου πάνω στο τραπέζι και χαμηλώνω τα μάτια. Χωρίς αμφιβολία γιατί, κατά βάθος, θέλω να πιστέψω ότι τίποτα ακόμα δεν έχει χαθεί. Γιατί απομένει κάτι παραπάνω από εικοσιτέσσερις ώρες, και μια άλλη λύση μπορεί να είναι δυνατή.
Ο Bellick φωνάζει έναν από τους φρουρούς επηρεασμένο από τις περιπολίες της νύχτας και τον διατάσσει να μας συνοδεύσει στον τομέα Α.
- Κουνηθείτε, ομάδα ανίκανων! Ούρλιαξε, πριν εξαφανιστεί προς το χώρο στάθμευσης.
