Source text - English There is a quiet revolution brewing at the Museum Art Conservation Centre (MACC) of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS).
MACC is one of the leading heritage conservation departments in India and under the guidance of CSMVS[1]s director general, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, a project is taking shape that has the potential to positively impact the Government of India[2]s national policy for art conservation.
Supported by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) through its media, art and culture portfolio, MACC is working to strengthen traditional and contemporary practices of art conservation in India.
The [1]Art conservation resurgence project[2] has been conceived and designed by Anupam Sah, head of art conservation, research and training at MACC in collaboration with SDTT.
In its first phase [1] backed by an SDTT grant of about Rs31 million, which will be given over a span of three years [2] the project aims to build expertise in art conservation by training staff from museums and institutions across India, publishing handbooks on specific aspects of art conservation, and establishing methods, systems and protocols that will be shared with practitioners.

The trust was one of the organisations that helped set up MACC four years ago.
At the time the centre was primarily an in-house resource, geared to looking after the museum[1]s own collection.
As it grew, establishing technical, research and educational divisions for providing help to other institutions, it earned a reputation for competency in art restoration.
MACC also realised the need to improve India[1]s art conservation practices.
Despite a great dependence on Western conservation thought, [1]the trust found a dearth of information and understanding about contemporary practices,[2] says Niyati Mehta, programme officer at the SDTT media, art and culture section.
Alongside, traditional systems were being ignored, which is why the project aimed to prioritise meeting this gap.
There are gaps
[1]Art collections in India have been deteriorating because of a poor understanding of the mechanisms of damage, with few models or reference documents for the Indian context,[2] explains Mr Sah.
We have practised conservation on the basis of world practices, but when things are not understood or created firsthand, there are gaps.
For example, conservation books authored in Europe might suggest that 18-20[1]C is the ideal temperature for storing or displaying paintings in a collection.
But, in India, setting the same temperature can damage the paintings.
When air gets cold it loses its capacity to hold moisture,[1] says Mr Sah.
The moment the air conditioner is switched off, the humid conditions in India often cause condensation.
The MACC project is grounded in the belief that training people and giving them the wherewithal to engage in conservation is the key to caring for our heritage.
It holds also that it is imperative to make the best of ancient and contemporary conservation practices.
Towards this end, it began a search for information available in regional Indian languages, such that is accessible to conservators at museums and custodians of private collections.
In the first phase the project involves surveying and compiling literature on various remedial conservation treatments developed around the world.
The team also researches indigenous systems and translates the literature into English, as a first step towards making the learning available to everyone across this multilingual country.

With university education and technical literature in India available predominantly in English, there has been an unfortunate loss of vernacular knowledge.
Thousands of years of civilisation led to the evolution of our arts traditions, with each region having its own distinct culture and language, rich in its own arts development and conservation practices,[1] says Mr Sah.
But that knowledge has eroded, leaving only traces of the original practice.
[1]There are various rituals like bathing idols in milk and honey, but the impact of these on the object is not properly known,[2] adds Mr Sah.
The fact that these objects have survived over millennia means that something was done right.
There is an enormous depth of knowledge in this subcontinent [1] rich in concept, thought and practice, encompassing materials, technologies and indigenous skills.
[1]Gathering knowledge
[1]To enhance knowledge of these ancient practices and to document them for wide dissemination, the project focused on specific art objects that are most commonly found across the country and studied them for their maintenance systems.
Since it was launched in February 2012, the art conservation resurgence project has focused on the following types of art collections: oil paintings, miniatures, manuscripts, stone and terracotta, textiles, ceramics and glass, metals, photographs, paintings on cloth, and polychrome on wood.
Says Mandira Chhabra, an assistant conservator at MACC:
The documentation of what we glean from the literature surveys, field work and site collaborations will also record diagnoses of the causes of deterioration and make recommendations on approaches towards conservation treatments for various types of art objects.
As the project evolved, institutions in India and around the world began to take notice.
Says Nidhi Shah, the project coordinator from MACC:
A few individuals can make a limited impact; so we decided to build collaborations across the country.
We thought of enhancing it into a movement for building standards and protocols for art conservation in the country.
Besides art conservators, the project also targets a host of public, private collections and institutions, such as [1]granthaghars [2](libraries), [3]mathas [4](monasteries), schools, colleges, universities, technical institutions and organisations like the Indian Railways and the Indian Army.

[1]कला संरक्षण पुनरुत्थान परियोजना [2] एमएसीसी के कला संरक्षण, शोध एवं प्रशिक्षण के प्रमुख श्री अनुपम साह द्वारा परिकल्पित और रूपायित है और इसमें एसडीटीटी का सहयोग प्राप्त है।
परियोजना के प्रथम चरण [1] में कला-संरक्षण के क्षेत्र में विशेषज्ञता हासिल करने की योजना है। इसके लिए देशभर के संग्रहालयों एवं संस्थाओं के स्टाफ को प्रशिक्षण दिया जाएगा, कला संरक्षण के विशिष्ट पहलुओं पर पुस्तकें प्रकाशित की जाएँगी और विधि, प्रणाली, प्रोटोकॉल निर्धारित किए जाएँगे और इसे वृत्तिजीवियों से साझा किया जाएगा। इस कार्य के लिए एसडीटीटी से 31 मिलियन रुपए का अनुदान प्राप्त होगा जो तीन वर्षों की अवधि [2] के दौरान दिया जाएगा।
तमिलनाडु के स्वामिमलै के स्थपति तिरु श्रीकंठ काँसे की ढलाई की प्राचीन कला को प्रदर्शित करते हैं।

एमएसीसी ने भारत[1] की कला-पुनरूद्घार-पद्धति को भी समुन्नत करने की आवश्यकता महसूस की।
एसडीटीटी मीडिया, कला एवं संस्कृति अनुभाग की कार्यक्रम अधिकारी नियति मेहता कहती हैं कि संरक्षण की पाश्चात्य विचारधारा[1] पर काफी निर्भर रहने के बावजूद न्यास ने पाया कि समकालीन पद्धतियों[2] के बारे में जानकारी और समझ की कमी है।
समीप में ही पारंपरिक तरीकों पर ध्यान नहीं दिया जा रहा था यही कारण है कि परियोजना में इसे प्राथमिकता प्रदान कर इस अंतर को दूर करने पर ध्यान केन्द्रित किया गया।
अंतर हैं
श्री साह ने बताया कि क्षति की क्रियाविधि की तुच्छ समझ होने तथा भारतीय परिप्रेक्ष्य से संबंधित मॉडल[2] और संदर्भ दस्तावेजों के नहीं होने के कारण भारत में [1]कला-संग्रहों का ह्रास होता जा रहा है।
हमने संरक्षण के लिए विश्व-स्तर पर काम में लाई जाने वाली पद्धतियों का सहारा लिया है किंतु जब चीजें समझ में नहीं आतीं या देखा-देखी बनाई जाती हैं तो अंतर आ जाता है।
उदाहरण-स्वरूप, यूरोप में लिखी गई किताबों में सुझाव मिल सकते हैं कि किसी संग्रह में पेंटिंग को सहेज कर रखने या प्रदर्शित करने के लिए 18-20[1] सेंटीग्रेड आदर्श तापमान है।
किंतु भारत में इतना तापमान रखने से पेंटिंग को नुकसान पहुँच सकता है।
श्री साह बताते हैं कि जब हवा ठंडी हो जाती है तो उसमें आर्द्रता[1] बरकरार नहीं रह पाती।
जैसे ही वातानुकूलक बंद किया जाता है, भारत की आर्द्र जलवायु के कारण अक्सर संघनन हो जाता है।
एमएसीसी परियोजना इस धारणा पर आधारित है कि लोगों को प्रशिक्षित करने और उन्हें संरक्षण में लगे रहने के साधन प्रदान कर ही हम अपनी विरासत का ध्यान रख सकते हैं।
यह भी मानता है कि प्राचीन और समकालीन संरक्षण पद्धतियों का सर्वश्रेष्ठ उपयोग करना अत्यंत आवश्यक है।
इस उद्देश्य के लिए इसने क्षेत्रीय भाषाओं में उपलब्ध सूचनाओं को खोजना आरंभ किया, ऐसा जो संग्रहालयों के संरक्षकों और निजी संरक्षकों के अभिरक्षकों पहुँच के अंदरहो सके।
परियोजना के प्रथम चरण में विश्वभर में विकसित विविध उपाचारात्मक संरक्षक उपायों का सर्वेक्षण और साहित्य का संकलन किया जाता है।
यह दल देशी प्रणाली पर भी शोध करता है और उस साहित्य को अंग्रेजी में अनूदित करता है ताकि इस बहुभाषी देश में सर्वत्र हमारा अधिगम सबको उपलब्ध हो। इस दिशा में यह प्रयास प्रथम सोपान है।
पुनरुद्घार विशेषज्ञ कार्यारंभ के पूर्व पिछवई वस्त्र लटकन को हुए नुकसान की जाँच करते हैं। पिछवई राजस्थान और गुजरात की एक प्राचीन कला-परंपरा है। धार्मिक प्रतिमाओं के पार्श्व में पृष्ठभूमि-आवरण के रूप में इन लटकनॉं को लगाया जाता रहा था और इन्हीं से इनका विकास हुआ।
विश्वविद्यालयों में शिक्षा-दीक्षा और तकनीकी साहित्य मुख्यतया अंग्रेजी में होने के कारण देशीय भाषाओं की काफी हानि हुई जो दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है।
श्री साह कहते हैं कि [1] हजारों वर्ष की सभ्यता में हमारी कला-परंपराओं का विकास हुआ जिसमें प्रत्येक क्षेत्र की अपनी खास संस्कृति व भाषा थी और जो अपनी कलाओं के विकास और संरक्षण-पद्धतियों[1] में समृद्ध था।
किंतु उस ज्ञान का क्षरण हो चुका है और अब केवल मौलिक पद्धति का केवल लेश-मात्र ही बाकी रह गया है।
[1]श्री साह आगे कहते हैं कि कई तरह के रिवाज हैं जैसे कि प्रतिमाओं को दूध तथा मधु में स्नान कराना, परंतु उन वस्तुओं पर इनका प्रभाव सम्यक् रूप से ज्ञात[2] नहीं है।
ये वस्तुएँ सहस्राधिक वर्षों तक सुरक्षित रह गईं। इसका अर्थ है कि कुछ-न-कुछ तो सही तरीके से किया गया था।
इस प्रायद्वीप[1] में ज्ञान का अथाह भंडार मौजूद है जिसकी संकल्पना, विचारधारा और पद्धति समृद्ध है और जिसमें पदार्थ, तकनीक और देशी कौशल सम्मिलित हैं।
ज्ञान-संग्रहण
इन प्राचीन पद्धतियों से जुड़े ज्ञान को समृद्ध करने और उन्हें दस्तावेज की शक्ल देने के लिए ताकि इस ज्ञान का प्रसार हो, परियोजना में खास किस्म की कला-वस्तुओं पर ध्यान दिया गया जो सामान्य तौर पर देशभर में पाए जाते हैं और उनके रख-रखाव से संबंधित प्रणाली का अध्ययन किया गया।
चूँकि इसका आरंभ फरवरी 2012 में हुआ, कला संरक्षण पुनरुत्थान परियोजना ने निम्नलिखित प्रकार के कला-संग्रहों पर ध्यान केन्द्रित किया – तैलीय पेंटिंग, भित्ति-चित्र, पांडुलिपि, पाषाण व मृण्मूर्ति, वस्त्र, मृद्भांड, काँच, धातु, छाया-चित्र, वस्त्रों पर पेंटिंग और काष्ठ पर बहुवर्ण।
एमएसीसी की एक सहायक संरक्षक मंदिरा छाबरा कहती हैं -
साहित्य के सर्वेक्षण, क्षेत्र-कार्य और स्थानिक सहयोग से हमें जो प्राप्त हुआ उनका दस्तावेज बनाते समय क्षय के कारणों की पहचान को भी अभिलेखबद्घ किया जाएगा और विभिन्न प्रकार की कला-वस्तुओं के संरक्षण-उपचारों के तरीकों के संबंध में संस्तुति की जाएगी।
जैसे-जैसे परियोजना आगे बढ़ी, भारत और विश्व की संस्थाओं ने इस पर ध्यान देना शुरू कर दिया।
एम.ए.सी.सी की परियोजना-संयोजक निधि शाह कहती हैं:
कुछ व्यक्ति केवल सीमित प्रभाव डालेंगे; इसलिए हमने निर्णय लिया कि देशभर में सहयोगियों को जोड़ा जाए।
हमने सोचा कि देश में कला-संरक्षण के लिए मानकों और प्रोटोकॉल के निर्माण के लिए इसे एक आंदोलन के रूप में आगे बढ़ाया जाए।
कला-संरक्षकों के साथ-साथ, परियोजना में कई सरकारी और निजी संग्रहों और संस्थाओं, यथा – [1]ग्रंथागार, [2] मठ, [3] [4]विद्यालय, महाविद्यालय, विश्वविद्यालय, तकनीकी संस्थाएँ और संगठन यथा - भारतीय रेल और भारतीय सेना का भी ध्यान में रखा गया है।
