| Translation - English On behalf of Kuwait Petroleum Belgium (Q8) BioSoil was requested to conduct a feasibility study on the full-scale biological approach of a mineral oil and BTEX contamination at the old site of a gas station. The contamination in the unsaturated zone was removed by means of excavation. The contamination in the smear zone, however, could not completely be removed because of the high permeability of the soil and because the groundwater level could not be lowered sufficiently. The feasibility of the biological approach suggested by BioSoil was explored through lab and field tests. The influence of high levels of glauconite and iron in the aquifer was examined closely. On the basis of this feasibility study, a full-scale in-situ remediation plan was developed in cooperation with the soil remediation expert. The soil and groundwater remediation project took into account a maximum remediation duration of one year, in view of redevelopment plans for the site and it is currently in the approval process. BioSoil was asked to conduct the full-scale soil and groundwater remediation project that is expected to start up in the first quarter of 2014. |

| Translation - English MTBE contaminations are a growing problem in the Netherlands. From 1987, MTBE (Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether) was used on a large scale as a replacement for lead in gasoline. Furthermore, the Netherlands is the largest producer of MTBE in Europe. With the ‘Soil Protection Act for MTBE and ETBE contaminations’ that was released in 2008, guidelines were set out for dealing with such contaminations. In the Netherlands, despite the increased attention for MTBE contaminations, there is relatively little experience with (stimulated) aerobic biological degradation as a remediation method.
BioSoil R&D has conducted a pilot test over several years at an industrial site with, among other things, MTBE contaminants, in order to determine the potential for stimulated aerobic degradation in varying circumstances. By placing a bioscreen they looked at the effect of the dosing of air (oxygen) and nutrients on, among other things, the MTBE and TBA (Tert-Butyl Alcohol) concentrations. As a result of the bioscreen, a biological active zone was created perpendicular to the groundwater flow, in which degradation of the contamination took place. At two depths in the bioscreen the inflow and outflow concentrations were measured on a regular basis. At 19 MBGL only MTBE and TBA were present in significant concentrations. At a depth of ten meters, besides MTBE and TBA, there were also high concentrations of hydrocarbons in the groundwater. By comparing the data at these two depths, we can also draw conclusions as to the influence of hydrocarbons and the degradation of MTBE and TBA. In addition, the geochemical parameters were evaluated and innovative measuring techniques such as substance-specific stable isotope analysis and molecular analyses were applied. Additional lab research was carried out with material from the location to better demonstrate and describe the biological degradation under controlled conditions.
