Czech to English: IX. Postmoderní přístupy (80. léta 20. století) / IX. Postmodern Approaches (1980s) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Translation - English The unofficial sphere of the realistic socialism period, lasting from 1972 until the fall of the iron curtain in 1989, did not concentrate only on the existential topics as it could appear. The pressure of the regime against the non-conformist authors was very strong and it culminated after the publishing of the Charter 77, resulting in a number of dissidents and other members of cultural opposition being imprisoned; the studios, however, vibrated with life (and spirit). Apart from the Geometric, Action, and Conceptual Art, which flourished namely in Moravia and Slovakia, a new young generation started to form around 1983. Their members just enrolled at art colleges and several years later, at various places and in varied formations, they proclaimed their affinity to an unclear, but for young artists a very suggestive, abundant stream of European Postmodernism. It was the time of excited intergenerational discussions, mutual condemnations as well as a slow dissipation of prejudices. Something substantial was in the air… Today, when the battle is over, all that is left is "purely art", which once wanted to destroy all established codes and it is hanging quite peacefully next to works by their former artistic opponents.
