Extreem gespecialiseerd in bureaustoelen

Avoiding diet trends
Knowing what is and isn’t healthy: it seems simple but in reality is not. There is an overwhelming number of blogs, adverts, books and magazines all trying to convince readers what constitutes healthy food. No one can see the forest for the trees. Quick-fix diet solutions are blown out of proportion, hyped up and put on a pedestal. Foodies are definitely in the vanguard when it comes to ventilating strong opinions about diet ‘shoulds’ and ‘musts’, often resulting in major contradictions.
Our interest in food has many positive aspects: we are learning to appreciate new, rich flavours and cuisines. However, many assumptions are quickly taken as fact. Statements based on scientific research should become the standard, a safe haven where we can separate fact from fiction. Science works steadily and needs time to produce real findings, which is especially true when it comes to research on nutrition. As nutrition is incredibly well-rounded and complex, there is still a lot we don’t know, but also a lot that we already do.
The food industry is constantly working to find new resources that can make positive contributions to general health. It keeps a close eye on what the market demands and frequently responds. Prof. Martijn Katan, emeritus professor of nutrition, makes short work of seventy myths surrounding food and drink. He finds the daily avalanche of nutritional claims spurted out by attention-seeking food producers, researchers and diet gurus irritating, because they often barely amount to more than the suggestion to lose weight by eating radishes from a faraway land.
