Source text - English Imagine, in one global day, the pages of prose turned, plays performed, films screened, the unending stream of television comedy and drama, twenty -four-hour print and broadcast news, bedtime tales told to children, barroom bragging, back-fence Internet gossip, humankind's insatiable appetite for stories. Story is not only our most prolific art form but rivals all activities--work, play, eating, exercise--for our waking hours. We tell and take in stories as much as we sleep--and even them we dream. Why? Because as critic Kenneth Burke tells us, stories are equipment for living.
Translation - Indonesian Bayangkan, pada sebuah hari yang sama di seluruh dunia, halaman prosa dibalik, pertunjukan drama dipertontonkan, film dibuat, aliran tanpa henti dari komedi dan drama televisi, berita dua-puluh-empat-jam dalam bentuk cetak dan siaran, dongeng penghantar tidur diceritakan kepada kanak-kanak, ruang bar membual, pagar belakang (blog) internet bergosip, hasrat tak terpuaskan umat manusia akan cerita. Cerita bukan hanya bentuk seni paling produktif, tetapi juga merupakan tandingan dari semua aktivitas – bekerja, bermain, makan, berolah raga – yang dilakukan ketika kita tidak sedang tidur. Kita menuturkan dan menyimak cerita sama banyaknya dengan waktu kita tidur – bahkan kemudian kita bermimpi. Mengapa? Mengapa begitu banyak dari hidup kita yang dihabiskan di dalam cerita? Karena seperti yang kritikus Kenneth Burke katakan, cerita adalah perlengkapan untuk hidup.
