Source text - Italian L’espansione territoriale e la crescita della popolazione portarono come conseguenza il ripensamento del sistema politico che dopo le guerre civili e l’assassinio di Cesare nel 44 a.c. e la lotta tra Marco Antonio e Ottaviano si risolse nel principato. L’imperatore governa un impero unificato e sostanzialmente pacificato fino al III secolo d.c. Con il III secolo d.c. una grossa crisi minaccia di far cadere l’impero, i barbari scorrazzano in ogni dove. Solo una serie di imperatori generali ripristina i confini. Durante il IV secolo si succedono pochi grandi imperatori ad una ridda di persone di secondo o terzo livello, mentre si sperimenta la soluzione di incorporare i barbari all’interno dello stato. Il 476 d.c. è la data che segna la fine ufficiale dell’impero e dopo una serie di regni barbarici e la breve dominazione bizantina Roma sancirà la fondazione del Sacro Romano Impero solo alla fine dell’VIII secolo con la figura di Carlo Magno, re dei franchi. Con la fine di questo dominio iniziarono a fronteggiarsi a Roma il potere crescente della chiesa con quello di alcune grandi famiglie romane. Translation - English Naturally, territorial expansion and the commensurate population explosion bring with them a reworking of the established political system. Thus, after a civil war and the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC and the resulting struggle between Marc Antony and Octavian, Rome was once again ruled ultimately by one man. The “emperor” presided over a unified and reasonably peaceful empire until the end of the 3rd century AD(CE). In the 3rd century, barbarian hordes terrorizing throughout Eurasia threatened to topple the empire. Only under the wise guidance of a series of emperor-generals did the boundaries remain intact. During the 4th century, there followed a period of sub-par emperors, some of whom even attempted to incorporate the barbarians into the state itself. 476 AD is the date that signifies the official end of the empire, and after a brief interlude of barbarian kings and a period of Byzantine domination, Rome was finally re-stabilized as the foundation for the Holy Roman Empire at the end of the 8th century by Charlemagne, king of the Franks. The end of this dominion ushered in a power vacuum of sorts which was filled by the rising power of the Church as well as several great Roman families. Within this power struggle there was oftentimes a ‘Holy Roman Emperor’ as well, now a German, whose power was finally ceded to the great Gregory the 7th at the end of the 11th century. At the end of the 13th century, the Pope transferred his seat from St. John Lateran’s Archbasilica to the Vatican City and as such, for almost all of the 14th century, Papal business was conducted from Avignon in France.

Source text - Italian La giornata non era cominciata sotto i migliori auspici. La Pizza Laguna-Veneta divorata la sera prima si era rivelata un osso troppo duro per il suo non più giovane stomaco. Aveva dormito male e ora giaceva nel letto, a faccia in su, abbandonato e stanco. La sua mente, ormai assalita dagli interrogativi e dai problemi delle prossime venti ore, gli impediva di ricongiungersi all'ovattato mondo dei sogni. Sentiva sua moglie respirare dolcemente al suo fianco, rilassata e indifesa come non era mai durante il giorno.
Con uno sforzo si girò di lato e cercò di mettere a fuoco la banda metallica appesa al muro che fungeva da calendario e orologio: le cinque e quaranta di Venerdì 26 Settembre 2031. Senza capire bene il perché decise di alzarsi. Dopo aver indossato gli abiti del giorno precedente si diresse silenziosamente verso la cucina per prepararsi il primo caffè della giornata.
“Vuoto!”, pensò infastidito riponendo il barattolo sulla mensola. Da quando Stella, ormai irrimediabilmente convertita alle tisane alla menta, aveva smesso di bere caffè, doveva essere lui a ricordarsi di comprarlo.
Fare la spesa, cioè l’arte di sapere cosa manca oggi e cosa servirà domani, non era mai stato il suo forte. Non che non ne fosse capace, semplicemente la cosa non gli veniva spontanea e se in qualche modo lo stress del lavoro lo aiutava a combattere la sua mancanza di organizzazione, quando si trattava della propria sopravvivenza, non riusciva a essere diverso. Viveva ancora alla giornata, anche se faceva di tutto per ignorare e mascherare questa verità.
Con un’impercettibile alzata di spalle decise di dirigersi al bar vicino a casa che a quell'ora doveva essere già aperto. Attraversando l’anticamera notò, dall’assenza del giubbotto sull’attaccapanni, che suo figlio non era ancora rientrato. Pensò, con un pizzico d’invidia, ai giovani che potevano permettersi di passare le loro nottate con gli amici, allegri, rumorosi e senza alcuna preoccupazione.
Non era stato diverso da loro in gioventù e un brivido lo attraversò mentre alcuni scorci del suo passato si materializzavano, come sempre non richiesti, davanti ai suoi occhi. L'eco delle facce, dei luoghi e delle voci della sua giovinezza lo riempiva spesso, soprattutto negli ultimi mesi, di un'amara nostalgia per ciò che era e non sarebbe stato mai più. Sentiva il peso di tutte le cose non fatte, delle decisioni non prese, delle occasioni lasciate ad aspettare. La vecchiaia, l'oscura compagna che da tanto tempo condivideva silenziosa il suo cammino, aveva deciso infine di rivelare la sua ingombrante presenza.
Lo specchio dell’ascensore, impietoso come sempre, non faceva che accrescere questo senso d’inquietudine. Sebbene, grazie a un costante allenamento, si mantenesse ancora in forma, i segni della decadenza fisica erano evidenti: i capelli, abbandonata completamente la sommità della fronte, esibivano qua e là delle allarmanti zone argentate; gli occhi, consumati dagli ultimi anni di lavoro, rimanevano socchiusi, quasi a voler fuggire la luce; rughe sempre più profonde solcavano inesorabili il suo volto, come le pieghe di una mappa usata troppo spesso. Certo, i suoi settantasei chili di peso per un metro e ottanta di altezza erano ancora l’invidia di amici e conoscenti, ma lui si era ormai da tempo rassegnato ad un lento, quotidiano declino.

Translation - English The day was ill-fated from the start. Scarfing down all that Pizza Laguna the night before was more than his aging stomach could handle. He hadn’t slept well; now he tossed and turned and stared at the ceiling, tired and beaten. The problems and inquiries of the next twenty hours loomed heavy and his mind cried out to rejoin the padded world of dreams. His wife breathed softly beside him, relaxed and vulnerable as she never was during the day.
With some effort he turned over and glanced at the metallic strip displaying the date and time: Friday September 26, 2031, five-forty A.M. Without really knowing why, he decided to get up. After putting on yesterday’s clothes, he crept toward the kitchen to make first coffee.
“Empty!”
He put the tin back on the shelf and grumbled to himself. Ever since Stella converted to mint brew, she’d stopped drinking coffee, and he had to remember to buy it himself.
Doing the shopping, the art of knowing what’s missing today and what you’ll need tomorrow, was never his forte. Not that he was incapable, it just never felt natural in his mind. The stress from work might explain his lack of organization, but he was hopeless when it came to the actual necessities of life. He was still living day to day, though he did everything possible to mask or ignore the truth.
With an imperceptible shrug, he made for the bar near his house, just opening its doors. There was no jacket on the coatrack as he crossed the anteroom; his son wasn’t back yet. With a trace of envy, he thought about young people spending their evenings out with friends, loud and happy, not a care in the world.
He used to be just like them. A shiver ran through his body; the past flashed before his eyes, uninvited as usual. The echo of faces, of rooms and voices of his youth came back, especially during the last few months. Bitter nostalgia for what was and would never be again. He felt the weight of things left undone, decisions unmade, opportunities missed. Old age, the dim companion tracking him silently for so long, finally revealed its cumbersome presence.
The elevator’s reflection, ruthless as ever, worsened his sense of discomfort. His workout routine kept him in good shape, but the signs of physical deterioration were there: the top of his forehead bereft of hair, alarmingly silver elsewhere. His eyes, after years of work, stayed half-closed, as if to escape the light. Ever-deepening wrinkle lines made grooves in his face, like folds in a well-worn map. Though his seventy-six kilos at one hundred eighty centimetres still made people envious, he had resigned himself to a slow, daily decline some time ago.
Just a few months until he hit fifty.
