As the one-year anniversary of the uprising in Syria approaches, the country is on the brink of civil war.

Syrians are approaching the one-year anniversary of what has become the most tragic, far-reaching and uncertain episode of the Arab uprisings. Since protesters first took to the streets in towns and villages across the country in March 2011, they have paid an exorbitant price in a domestic crisis that has become intertwined with a strategic struggle over the future of Syria.
The regime of Bashar al-Asad has fought its citizens in an unsuccessful attempt to put down any serious challenge to its four-decade rule, leaving several thousand dead. Many more languish in jail. The regime has polarized the population, rallying its supporters by decrying the protesters as saboteurs, Islamists and part of a foreign conspiracy. In order to shore up its own ranks, it has played on the fears of the ‘Alawi minority from which the ruling family hails, lending the conflict sectarian overtones. All these measures have pushed a growing number of young men on the street -- and a small but steady stream of army defectors -- to put up an armed response, while impelling large sections of the opposition to seek financial, political and military help from abroad. Loyalist units have taken considerable casualties from the armed rebels, and the regime has hit back with disproportionate force.

“It is time we gave them the wherewithal to fight back and stop the slaughter,” said Senator John McCain on Monday, referring to Syria’s opposition amid the carnage being wrought by the Assad regime’s efforts to quash a year-old rebellion. But McCain’s call is unlikely to be heeded by the Obama Administration or other Western governments as they prepare for Friday’s inaugural meeting in Tunis of a “Friends of Syria” forum established to coordinate an international response to the crisis. That’s because Western decision-makers are not quite sure just who the Syrian opposition would be — there is no single leadership that speaks on behalf of those fighting the regime on the ground in cities across Syria, and there are certainly signs that its ranks may include elements deemed hostile to the West. And also, because it’s far from clear just how arming rebel forces would, in fact, “stop the slaughter” and not intensify it.

Η πρώτη επέτειος του πλέον τραγικού, εκτεταμένου και αβέβαιου επεισοδίου των Αραβικών εξεγέρσεων πλησιάζει για τους Σύριους. Αφότου οι διαδηλωτές βγήκαν για πρώτη φορά στους δρόμους σε πόλεις και χωριά σε ολόκληρη την χώρα, το Μάρτιο του 2011, έχουν δεχτεί ένα εξοντωτικό χτύπημα στα πλαίσια μίας εγχώριας κρίσης που είναι συνυφασμένη με τον στρατηγικό αγώνα για το μέλλον της Συρίας.
Το καθεστώς του Μπασάρ Αλ-Άσαντ μάχεται τους πολίτες σε μία ανεπιτυχή προσπάθεια καταστολής οποιασδήποτε σοβαρής αμφισβήτησης της σαρακονταετούς κυριαρχίας του, αφήνοντας δεκάδες χιλιάδες νεκρούς πίσω του ενώ πολλοί περισσότεροι σαπίζουν στις φυλακές. Το καθεστώς έχει πολώσει τον πληθυσμό, συσπειρώνοντας τους υποστηρικτές του καταγγέλλοντας τους διαδηλωτές ως δολιοφθορείς, Ισλαμιστές και μέρος μίας ξένης συνομωσίας. Για να ενισχύσει τις τάξεις του, εκμεταλλεύεται τους φόβους της μειονότητας των Αλαουιτών, μειονότητα από την οποία κατάγεται η κυβερνώσα οικογένεια, προσδίδοντας σεκταριστική χροιά στη σύγκρουση. Όλα αυτά τα μέτρα έχουν εξωθήσει ολοένα και περισσότερους νέους ανθρώπους στους δρόμους και ένα μικρό αλλά σταθερό ρεύμα αποστατών του στρατού να καταφύγει σε ένοπλη αντίδραση, ενώ ωθούν μεγάλη μερίδα της αντιπολίτευσης στην αναζήτηση οικονομικής, πολιτικής και στρατιωτικής βοήθειας από το εξωτερικό. Οι καθεστωτικές δυνάμεις έχουν υποστεί σημαντικές ανθρώπινες απώλειες από τους ένοπλους αντάρτες και το καθεστώς έχει αντεπιτεθεί με δυσανάλογη δύναμη.
