Translation - English Question Guide Supplemental Questions Week 2
1. Amount of time spent at hujras
For every respondent you talk to from now on, I would like to know how much time they spend in the hujra. (If it is a female, please write down how much time their husband or father or brother spends.) I would like to know:
How frequently do they go? (Eg. Every day, every few days, once a week, etc?)
How much time do they spend each time they go? (Even if it is different every time, that is okay. Just let me know the average or the range of time that they spend at the hujra.)
Please note this in the "Interviewee" section of your Notes.
2. Usage of SMS alert systems or other mobile services
We are interested in understanding who uses SMS alert systems and how they use them, as well as other mobile-based systems for getting news or information. Some of this is covered in your new Question Guide, but I want you guys to investigate SMS alert systems specifically:
How much do people use SMS alert system? What kind of news or information do people use them for? (Eg. sports, entertainment, community news, national news, politics, etc)
Can a person select the type of information that you want to be alerted about? If so, what are the choices to choose from?
What are the SMS alert systems, which ones do people use and think are good? (For SMS alert systems, we have heard about ARY, Al Jazeera. What are the others?)
For people that use these systems, can you take photos of the last 10 alerts that came through the system?
Other than SMS alerts, are there other ways or services (eg. voice-based, or where you can call in) that people can find out breaking news or verify information using their mobile phones?
Thank you to Farooq and Amjad in Mohmand for helping surface this interesting behaviour.
Those that find other interested mobile-based systems get bonus points! Please let me know, by SMS or email, if you find one of these other systems ASAP.
3. Usage of cassettes
In the more rural and remote areas, we are interested in understanding whether people are recording messages on cassette tapes to send to family and friends in other areas. Is this a behaviour that you have seen?
If so, please find out more details about this behaviours.
Who is doing this?
How common is it?
Why are they choosing this way of communicating instead of others?
How frequently do they send these messages? How do they send these (by mail, with a friend, etc)?
By now, you know how much we like details :)
This is a behaviour observed by Shakir in N Waziristan, and we are interested to find out if this happens in other areas as well.
4. How illiterate populations get and verify news information
For illiterate respondents, we are interested in an example of a time where they have tried to understand a specific news event through only looking at images (whether in the newspapers, via mobile, etc) which I saw was a practice with a respondent that Arif interviewed. I would like a detailed description of
what was the news event
how did they hear about it
how did they get more information about it
how they used the newspapers, mobile, etc to get more information about it, even if they didn’t understand the language (or couldn't read, etc)
We are interested in how illiterate populations get the news through traditional media sources. Also, we are interested in people watch TV or look at newspapers in languages they don't understand or "are illiterate in" (eg. English). If they don't understand this English, why is this sources still valuable?
