Source text - Portuguese Este trabalho trata de um aspecto relativo ao debate sobre a legalização da eutanásia voluntária: o uso de argumentos do tipo declive escorregadio com o objetivo se de opor à legalização da prática. Minha intenção principal é a de defender que um argumento desse tipo usado contra a legalização, argumento este presente na obra do filósofo David S. Oderberg (2009), não é persuasivo. Não se trata, no entanto, do único argumento dele contra a legalização; pode ser que ele esteja certo quando afirma que não devemos legalizar a prática. Apenas não acho que o filósofo é bem sucedido em favor disso com o argumento aqui tratado.
A razão pela qual o argumento não é persuasivo é o fato de ter uma premissa falsa, o que compromete sua solidez e é motivo para rejeitá-lo. Tal premissa é a seguinte: se legalizarmos a eutanásia voluntária utilizando como base a autonomia, tal como Peter Singer (2002) a entende, não teremos razões para rejeitar a eutanásia involuntária. Penso que é possível aceitar a eutanásia voluntária e rejeitar a contraparte involuntária tendo como base precisamente o que Oderberg pensa não oferecer razões para tal.
Translation - English This work covers one aspect of the debate on the legalization of voluntary euthanasia: the use of slippery slope arguments aimed at opposing legalization of the practice. My main intention is to show that this type of argument, which occurs in the work of philosopher David S. Oderberg (2009), is not persuasive when used against legalization. However, I do not touch his main argument against legalization, which could be correct in concluding that we should not legalize the practice. I just do not believe the philosopher has succeed in supporting his view with the argument covered here.
The reason this argument is not persuasive is the fact that it has a false premise, which compromises its soundness and is grounds for rejecting it. This premise is as follows: if we legalize voluntary euthanasia using autonomy as a basis, as Peter Singer (2002) understands it, we would have no reason to reject involuntary euthanasia. I believe it is possible to accept voluntary euthanasia and reject its involuntary counterpart based on preciously what Oderberg thinks does not provide reasons.
