Source text - German Insbesondere der herodoteische Bericht, aber auch die vergleichbaren Darstellungen bei Platon und Isokrates, haben bisher Eingang in fast jede Gesamtdarstellung gefunden, in der die Geschichte Athens oder Griechenlands während der Perserkriege abgehandelt wurde. Die Tatsache, daß die Spartaner eine der wichtigsten Schlachten der griechischen Geschichte versäumen, um ihr Gesetz nicht zu übertreten, ist allzu prägnant und für ein bestimmtes Sparta-Bild charakteristisch. Um so erstaunlicher ist es, daß es bisher nicht unternommen worden ist, die erzählerisch so reizvolle Darstellung auf ihren historischen Wahrheitsgehalt zu überprüfen. Es hat durchaus Ansätze gegeben, die einzelne Details des Berichts kritisch beleuchten. Die Frage, ob es überhaupt möglich war, mit einem Hoplitenheer von zweitausend Mann innerhalb von drei Tagen aus Sparta abzumarschieren und in Attika einzutreffen, stand dabei im Mittelpunkt. In weiten Teilen der Forschung ist der Bericht dagegen in seiner Substanz akzeptiert und sogar noch um manches Detail erweitert worden, für das es keinerlei Anhaltspunkt in der antiken Überlieferung gibt. So berichtet weder Herodot noch Platon oder Isokrates, daß es die Feier des Festes für Apollon Karneios war, das die Spartaner an einem rechtzeitigen Abmarsch hinderte. Und doch findet sich genau diese Angabe in zahlreichen modernen Darstellungen auch der jüngeren Zeit. Man hat sogar die Rekonstruktion des Schlachtdatums von der herodoteischen Vollmondkonstellation abhängig gemacht, obwohl doch Platon einen ganz anderen Grund für die Verspätung der Spartaner angibt. Am weitesten ist Ernst Baltrusch gegangen, der auf der Grundlage des in der Episode erwähnten athenischen Beistandsersuchens einen Beitritt Athens zum Peloponnesischen Bund im Jahre 492 v. Chr. angenommen hat – ohne daß es dafür auch nur einen Quellenbeleg gäbe.
Translation - English The Herodotean report in particular, but also the comparable portrayals in Plato and Isocrates have thus far found entry into practically every general portrayal in which the history of Athens or of Greece during the Persian Wars is treated. The fact that the Spartans miss one of the most important battles in Greek history so as not to transgress against their law is overly succinct and characteristic of a particular picture of Sparta. It is all the more astounding, then, that no one has thus far undertaken to examine the historical content of this portrayal, which is narratively so appealing. There have by all means been attempts to shed critical light on individual details of the account. At their center was the question of whether it was at all possible to march from Sparta with a 2,000-man hoplite army and arrive in Attica within three days. In large sections of the scholarly literature, on the contrary, the account is substantively accepted and even expanded with many details of which no indication exists in the ancient tradition. Thus, neither Herodotus nor Plato nor Isocrates reports that the celebration of the festival of Apollo Karneios was what was preventing the Spartans from leaving promptly. Indeed, it is exactly this piece of information that appears in numerous recent portrayals. The reconstruction of the date of the battle has even been made to depend on the circumstance of the full moon in Herodotus though Plato does adduce a completely different reason for the lateness of the Spartans. Ernst Baltrusch has gone the furthest, presuming on the basis of the Athenian appeal for help mentioned in this episode that Athens joined the Peloponnesian League in 492 B.C., but without even one piece of evidence from the sources to support it.

Source text - German Die untere Pamisos-Ebene (Makaria) in Messenien ist Teil eines sedimentär
verfüllten Halbgrabens, der im Osten vom Horst des Taygetos-Gebirges und im
Westen vom Westmessenischen Gebirge eingefaßt wird (Abb. 2/1). Wie bei fast
allen Küstenebenen des Mittelmeerraumes begann ihre Bildung erst vor etwa 6.000
Jahren, als nach dem maximalen Vordringen des Meeres eine verbreitete Tendenz
zu dessen Rückzug einsetzte. Entscheidend waren dafür einerseits die deutliche
Verlangsamung der durch die globale Erwärmung bedingten spät- und postglazialen
Transgression sowie andererseits der ganz wesentlich auf den Menschen
zurückzuführende starke Landschaftswandel aufgrund beschleunigter Erosion im
Hinterland und auf den Hängen (Quellgebiete) bei korrelater Akkumulation in
Flussauen und Deltas (Senken).
Die Pamisos-Ebene ist heute eine aus vorwiegend fluvialen Sedimenten aufgebaute
Alluvialebene, die vom Meer durch eine mächtige Barriere aus Sand und Kies
getrennt ist, deren Schichtung in flachem Winkel landwärts einfällt. Durch die
Stauwirkung des Strandwallkomplexes kommt es auf seiner Landseite während der
regenreichen Wintermonate zur Ausbildung von Süßwasserseen, die teilweise im
Sommer verschwinden und trockene, begehbare Oberflächen hinterlassen, teilweise
aber auch dauerhafte Sümpfe bilden (Kraft et al. 1975: 1195.1202). Periodische,
flächenhafte Überschwemmungen der unteren Messenischen Ebene traten bis in die
1960er Jahre auf, als von Seiten der Allgemeinen Organisation für Bewässerung und
Melioration des Pamisosgebiets (Γ.O.E.B.) großmaßstäbige
Entwässerungsmaßnahmen ergriffen wurden (Sauerwein 1968: 179).
Translation - English The lower Pamisos plain (Makaria) in Messenia is part of a tectonic depression (half-graben) filled with Quaternary sediments that is framed by the eyries of the Taygetos on the east and the mountains of Kyparissia on the west (Abb. 2/1). As with most Mediterranean coastal plains, delta formation here started about 6,000 years ago, when long-term marine ingression was replaced by regressional dynamics due to slowing of the post-glacial rise in sea level and anthropogenic influence on the rate of erosion in the hinterland, triggering increased sediment loads in the low-lying river meadows and deltas.
The Pamisos plain today consists mainly of fluvial sediments that are separated from the sea by a broad barrier of well-sorted sand and gravel whose layers incline landward. The dam formed by the beach ridge caused freshwater flooding of the lower part of the Makaria during the rainy winter season, while the wetlands that formed survived even in the summer months (Kraft et al. 1975: 1195, 1202) until the 1960s, when the General Organisation for Irrigation and Amelioration of the Pamisos area (ΓOEB) implemented large-scale drainage measures (Sauerwein 1968: 179).

Source text - Greek Στον 19ο αιώνα η παγκοσμιοποίηση σήμαινε την εντατική διακίνηση αγαθών, ιδεών και κεφαλαίων ανάμεσα στις ηπείρους. Πρόκειται ουσιαστικά για την ανάπτυξη του διεθνούς εμπορίου μέσα από τη βαθμιαία ενσωμάτωση των διεθνών αγορών στο τέλος του 19ου αιώνα. Η περίοδος αυτή, μια περίοδος χωρίς στρατιωτικές συγκρούσεις στην Ευρώπη (1871-1914), ευνόησε την οικονομική μεγέθυνση και το διεθνή δανεισμό. Παράλληλα στην Ανατολή η περίοδος του σουλτάνου Αμπντούλ Χαμίτ (1894- 96) και το κίνημα των Νεοτούρκων (1907- 1909) χαρακτηρίζονται από συγκρουσιακές εθνοτικές διεκδικήσεις με πρωταγωνιστές Αρμένιους και Έλληνες στο εσωτερικό της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας, με αποκορύφωμα τους Βαλκανικούς πολέμους, αλλά και τη γενοκτονία των Αρμενίων το 1915. Translation - English In the 19th century, globalization meant intensive trade in commodities, ideas, and capital between continents. Essentially, it had to do with the development of international trade through the increasing integration of international markets at the end of the 19th century. This period, a time in which Europe was without military conflicts (1871-1914), was favorable to financial aggrandizement and international lending. At the same time in the East, the period of the Sultan Abdul Hamid’s reign (1876-1909) and the Young Turk movement (1906-1908) were distinguished by conflicting ethnicist claims, with Armenians and Greeks as the principal groups inside the Ottoman Empire, that culminate in the Balkan Wars as well as in the Armenian genocide of 1915. After the Congress of Berlin in 1878, the Greek and Armenian diaspora in Britain, united in their common involvement with international commercial transactions, would meet with Joannes Gennadius as principal agent in the negotiations.

Μέγ. µήκος 0,33, πλ. χείλους 0,075, ύψ. µετώπου χείλους 0,052, πλ. σχοινοειδούς ραβδίου 0,015 µ. Ύψος γραµµάτων 0,014 - 0,022, αποστάσεις 0,004 - 0,009 µ. Πηλός είναι καλά ψημένος, ερυθροκάστανος και ανάμικτος µε χαλίκια και άµµο, και φέρει γκριζοκόκκινο αλείφωµα. Το διακοσµητικό έξεργο σχοινιοειδές κυµάτιο (ραβδίο) κάτω από το γείσωμα του προεξέχοντος χείλους είναι απόλυτα όµοιο με εκείνο που απαντά συχνότατα στους ανάγλυφους αμφορο-κρατήρες της Σπάρτης, στους οποίους διακρίνονται πέντε ομάδες πηλών. Μέσα στο χρονικό αυτό πλαίσιο οι αμφορο-κρατήρες διακρίνονται, ανάλογα με την εξέλιξη του σχήµατος και την τεχνοτροπία σε τρεις οµάδες. Η επιγραφή µας υποχρεώνει να κατατάξουµε τον αμφοροκρατήρα των Ακοβίτικων στην τελευταία εξελικτική οµάδα. Ενδέχεται να είχε µεταφερθεί από τη Σπάρτη, µολονότι ευκολότερη ήταν η µετατακίνηση των τεχνιτών και των τύπων (µητρών) παρά των ίδιων των αγγείων. Η ύπαρξη πάντως τοπικού κεραμικού εργαστηρίου στην περιοχή του ιερού των Ακοβίτικων ή των πόλεων Θουρίας και Φαρών δεν μπορεί να αποκλεισθεί, απεναντίας φαίνεται πιθανή, γιατί βεβαιώθηκε η παρουσία εργαστηρίου µεταλλουργίας στον χώρο του ιερού.
Πρόκειται για τον πρώτο αμφοροκρατήρα αυτού του τύπου που απαντά εκτός Σπάρτης, σε περιοχή όμως που βρισκόταν υπό την επικράτειά της. Φαίνεται ότι οι λακωνικοί αυτοί αμφοροκρατήρες με την πλούσια έξεργη διακόσμηση χρησιµοποιούνταν είτε ως αναθηµατικοί είτε ως ταφικοί αδιακρίτως, όπως ακριβώς συνέβαινε με τους πρωιμότερους ανάγλυφους κυκλαδικούς πιθαμφορείς. Translation - English The inscription was cut into the outer surface of the rim after the vessel was fired and reads as follows:

Maximum preserved length 0.33 m, width of rim 0.075 m, thickness of rim 0.052 m, width of the rope-patterned band 0.015 m. Letter height 0.014-0.022 m, letter spacing 0.004-0.009 m.
The clay, reddish-brown in colour and tempered with grit and sand, is well-fired and coated with greyish-red slip. The decorative rope-patterned raised band below the rim’s overhanging edge is absolutely similar to those very often found on the relief amphoras of Sparta, which have been assigned to five groups according to clay type. This pithos/amphora from Akovitika can be classified as belonging to the group produced from a mixture of red and white clay. The activity of the Laconian potters’ workshops lasted from approximately the middle of the 7th to the middle of the 6th centuries B.C. (620-550 B.C.). Within these chronological bounds, the relief amphoras have been assigned to three groups depending on formal development and technique. Our inscription obliges us to place the amphora from Akovitika in the last group in terms of development. It could perhaps have been brought from Sparta, although transporting craftsmen and forms (moulds) would have been easier than vessels. At any rate, the existence of a local potter’s workshop in the area of the sanctuary at Akovitika or of the cities of Thouria and Pharai cannot be ruled out. On the contrary, it seems likely because the existence of a metalworking workshop in the sanctuary’s grounds has been confirmed.
What we have here is the first relief amphora of this type found outside of Sparta, but in an area that lay under Sparta’s control. It appears that these Laconian relief amphoras, with their abundant decoration, were used indifferently either as dedications or for funerary purposes, which is precisely what happened in the case of the earlier Cycladic relief pithoi. That the inscription was cut after the vessel was fired shows that the function – funerary and/or dedicatory – of these expensive vessels was not altogether clear from the outset.

Source text - Greek Οι προϋποθέσεις για την έκδοση απόφασης χορήγησης άδειας συλλέκτου είναι: 1) Τα αρχαία στην κατοχή ή την κυριότητα του ενδιαφερομένου να αποτελούν ένα ενιαίο σύνολο από καλλιτεχνική, ιστορική ή επιστημονική άποψη. 2) Ο χαρακτήρας και η σημασία της συλλογής. 3) Ο ενδιαφερόμενος να παρέχει εγγυήσεις για την προστασία και τη διασφάλιση κατάλληλων συνθηκών φύλαξης και διατήρησης των αντικειμένων της συλλογής, καθώς και για την τήρησή των λοιπών υποχρεώσεων του συλλέκτη.
Δεν μπορεί να αναγνωριστεί ως συλλέκτης
α) άτομο το οποίο έχει καταδικαστεί αμετάκλητα ή εκκρεμεί ποινική δίωξη εναντίον του για κακούργημα ή παράβαση της νομοθεσίας για την προστασία της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς ή για πλαστογραφία, δωροδοκία, κλοπή, υπεξαίρεση ή αποδοχή προϊόντων εγκλήματος. Translation - English The preconditions for the publication of a decision on the granting of a permit to a collector are: 1) The antiquities in the possession or the ownership of the interested party should constitute a unified whole from an artistic, historical, or scholarly point of view. 2) The character and the significance of the collection. 3) The interested party should provide guarantees for the protection and the safeguarding of suitable conditions for keeping and preserving the objects in the collection, as well as for the observance of the remaining obligations of the collector.
Who cannot be recognized as a collector?
a) An individual who has been irreversibly convicted or is subject to a pending criminal prosecution for a felony offense or a violation of the laws governing protection of the cultural heritage or for forgery, bribery, theft, embezzlement, or receiving the proceeds of crime. In addition, the application may be rejected if the criminal case has stopped because of statutory limitation.
In the case of the application being submitted by a legal person, the aforementioned impediments must not coincide in the persons who handle its management.
b) A person whose profession is or was related to the protection of monuments or is an antiquities dealer, or a trader in modern monuments, or an employee or colleague of natural or legal persons who are involved in a similar undertaking.

Source text - French La thésaurisation concerne deux circuits différents. D'une part, les trésors des dieux accaparent un capital chez les particuliers qui leur consacrent des objets en métal précieux. D'autre part, ils mobilisent une partie des bénéfices en liquidités issus des capitaux sacrés, lorsqu'une phiale d'argent ou une couronne d'or est consacrée sur le produit d'un revenu du dieu. Cette pratique est courante dans le cas de capitaux de fondation prêtés à intérêt et dont une partie du produit aboutit à la confection de phiales de métal précieux, parallèlement à des dépenses de sacrifices et de banquets . Elle est également répandue dans d'autres contextes. Ce fut régulièrement le cas dans la gestion athénienne du sanctuaire de Délos au IVe s. avec la consécration annuelle d'une couronne d'or à Apollon qui mobilisait une partie des recettes monnayées du sanctuaire, à côté de pratiques administratives performantes visant à développer les ressources du patrimoine sacré . A l'époque hellénistique, les inventaires de Didymes montrent également que la cité de Milet a parfois choisi de transformer le surplus de certaines recettes en coupes d'argent, signalées comme telles dans les listes d'offrandes.
Translation - English Accumulation is connected with two different systems of circulation. On one hand, the treasuries of the gods monopolized the capital of private individuals who dedicated objects of precious metal to them. On the other hand, they freed up part of the profits in liquid currency originating from the sacred capital when a silver phiale or a golden wreath was dedicated from the proceeds of the god’s income. This was the current practice in the case of endowment capital belonging to the foundation being lent at interest, of which one part of the proceeds ended up being made into phialai of precious metal, analogous to the expenses for sacrifices and banquets. The practice was equally widespread in other contexts. It was the regular state of affairs during the Athenians’ management of the sanctuary of Delos in the fourth century, with the annual dedication of a gold crown to Apollo, which took a part of the sanctuary’s cash revenues out of circulation, together with efficient managerial practices intended to increase the resources of the sacred patrimony. In the Hellenistic period, the inventories of Didyma likewise show that the city of Miletus often decided to convert the surplus from certain sources of income into silver cups, so indicated in the lists of offerings.
