English to Arabic: Mars General field: Science Detailed field: Astronomy & Space
Source text - English Mars
Mars, the first planet beyond the orbit of the Earth, has always been of special interest, because until relatively recently it was thought that advanced life forms might exist there. Less than a century ago, there was even a prize (the Guzman Prize) offered in France to be given to the first man to establish contact with beings on another world - Mars being specifically excluded as being too easy!
Translation - Arabic

Source text - English Flying now enables millions to travel far more cheaply
than by rail or road. But it is also the fastest-growing
source of greenhouse gases, contributing to global
warming. A new trend is emerging: ‘slow travel’.
For some, this is about spending more time at a
destination, mingling with people, getting to know the
local flora and fauna, taking long walks and exploring,
instead of rushing from one glitzy tourist trap to
another. It can also include choosing not to fly, taking
the time to savour experiences and landscapes along
the way. Jet-setters miss it all—and get jet lag!
English to Arabic: Understanding Kuwaiti Culture and Heritage by Investigating Alsadu Craft General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English Overview and Rationale for Teaching Art History
New methods of teaching art history linked to learning about culture have recently become formalised in Western countries. The present art curriculum for Year Five students in Kuwait does not include art history. This curriculum unit comprises six lessons, targeted at Year Five female students in primary schools. It provides new art history content which it is hoped will improve their understanding of Kuwait’s heritage and culture.
This curriculum unit focuses on Alsadu and crafts. Teachers transmit important aspects of the cultural context of this weaving tradition so as to give young students a better chance of understanding their culture. The art curriculum should include art history and cultural learning as well as art practice. It should provide an incentive for learning about the crafts that are part of our own history.
This curriculum unit aims to enhance Kuwaiti students’ ability to connect with their culture, national customs and artistic traditions through studying specific cultural artefact; Alsadu weaving. Students learn a few of the traditional weaving skills which are still practised today and relate them to their cultural context. I hope these lessons will alert them to the need to be aware of and conserve this heritage as they make their way in the modern world. The curriculum introduces art historical learning by means of a questioning inquiry strategy, together with the use of sketchbooks, museum visits and meetings with artists.
In this curriculum students use an art-historical enquiry method developed by Erickson (1993, p. 148). They are encouraged to research and investigate artworks and ways in which they relate to the cultural and historical contexts from which they arise. One of the best ways of studying the culture of previous societies is to study their artworks (Greer, 1987).
Translation - Arabic
