Source text - English So now after we have clarified the essential nature of logical formalizations, we are ready to return to the notion of semantic interpretation. The considerations carried out so far allow us to properly distinguish three essentially different kinds of considerations, which may lead to a notion of semantic interpretation. The considerations can be roughly summarized as follows:
1. “It is essential for the natural language that its expressions are in a way connected with extralinguistic entities. To make a formal language into a full- ledged representative of the natural one we thus have to establish some connection of this kind.”
2.“The axiomatization (if any) in a way characterizes standing truth. But is the characterization right and is it exhausting? Would it not be nice to have an alternative way of such a characterization (for the sake of checkup?)” (If there is no axiomatization, then the idea of such a characterization is clearly even more appealing).
3. “Formal calculi are abstract; it is necessary to establish their connection with the concrete things to which the abstract systems apply.”
An interpretation is a connection between an expression and something; this much seems to be clear. Now: to do justice to (1), the something should be as similar as possible to what the corresponding natural expression is really connected with in the world. To do justice to (2), the something should be whatever, with the help of which we arrive at a plausible characterization of standing truth. To do justice (3), interpretation should be an act inverse to that of abstraction, i.e. an act connecting a variable formal expression with its instance; hence the something should be a grammatically appropriate expression.
What we are now going to try to show is that however diverse these three considerations may be, they can all be conveyed to one and the same notion of interpretation.
It might seem plausible to start from the considerations of type 1: we may try to find out the nature of the real- world (or mental-world) entities connected with expressions of our language and then try to capture them formally. This is the way which seems to be taken by many present theoreticians of language; however, it is a way we consider essentially doomed. The point is that even if we consider meanings to be objects present in our world or in our mind (a thesis we are not going to challenge here12), we can hardly consider them to be present there in such a way that they could be identified and explored in a direct way. To believe that meanings are ready- made objects only casually connected with expressions means to maintain what Quine (1969) calls museum myth. The problem is that the only way how wee able to grasp world is by means of language, and that hence our world is inevitably a world couched in (such or another) language. “There is no innocent eye,” as Goodman (1960) puts it.
It is surely possible to say that the meaning of some expression is a real- world object or a mental state and we may also appeal to intuition in support of such a claim however, it is, quite unclear which real criteria could be applied to make such a claim into a real thesis which could be verified. Any constitution of semantic interpretation the sole basis of imitating reality is thus in a sense a battle with an invisible enemy: not only that it is difficult to hit him, but also, and that is worse, it is not clear what shows count as a victory and what a loss.
Translation - Czech Nyní, když jsme si objasnili základní podstatu logického formulování, jsme připraveni vrátit se k teorii sémantického výkladu. Až dosud uskutečněné úvahy nám umožňují řádně odlišit tři v základě rozdílné druhy úvah, které mohou vést k teorii sémantického výkladu. Tyto úvahy mohou být shrnuty zhruba takto:
1. U přirozeného jazyka je nezbytné, aby jeho výrazy byly určitým způsobem spojeny s mimolingvistickými entitatmi. Aby se oficiální jazyk stal plnoprávným zástupcem toho přirozeného, musíme vytvořit jakési spojení tohoto druhu.
2. Axiomatizace (pokud se vyskytuje) jaksi výstižně popisuje zavedenou skutečnost. Ale je tato charakterizace správná a vyčerpávající? Nebylo by hezké mít alternativní způsob takovéto charakterizace (kvůli přezkoumání)? (Pokud se axiomatizace nevyskytuje, pak je představa takovéto charakterizace nepochybně ještě více žádoucí).
3. Formální kalkul je abstraktní, je nezbytné prokázat vztah s konkrétními věcmi, na které můžeme tento abstraktní systém aplikovat.
Výklad je vztah mezi výrazem a něčím, tolik se zdá zřejmé. Teď, abychom dali zapravdu úvaze 1, to něco by mělo být co nejvíce podobné tomu, s čím je odpovídající přirozený výraz opravdu spojen ve skutečnosti. K obhájení přepokladu 2, to něco by mělo být cokoli, s jehož pomocí dospějeme k přijatelné charakterizaci zavedené skutečnosti. Abychom dali zapravdu úvaze 3, výklad by měl být pravým opakem abstrakce, to znamená počin spojující proměnlivý formální výraz s konkrétním příkladem, z tohoto důvodu by to něco mělo být gramaticky vhodným výrazem.
Nyní se pokusíme ukázat, že jakkoli odlišné mohou tyto tři úvahy být, všechny mohou skýtat jednu a tutéž teorii výkladu.
Zdálo by se přijatelné začít u úvah typu 1: můžeme se pokusit objevit podstatu entit skutečného světa (nebo duševního světa), které jsou spojené s výrazy našeho jazyka a poté se je pokusit formálně zachytit. Je to cesta, kterou se vydává mnoho současných teoretiků jazyka, avšak je to způsob, který považujeme za předem odsouzený k nezdaru. Jde o to, že i když budeme považovat významy za předměty přítomné v našem světě nebo naší mysli (teze, jíž se zde nebudeme zabývat), můžeme je stěží považovat za přítomné takovým způsobem, který by je umožnil bezprostředně identifikovat a prozkoumat. Věřit, že významy jsou hotové předměty pouze náhodně spojené s výrazy, znamená držet se toho, čemu Quine (1969) říká muzeální mýtus. Problém je, že jediným způsobem, kterým dokážeme pochopit svět, je prostřednictvím jazyka, a proto je náš svět nevyhnutelně světem skrytým v (tom či oném) jazyce. „ Není nevinného oka“, jak tvrdí Goodman (1960).
Je jistě možné říci, že význam některého výrazu je skutečně existující předmět nebo duševní stav, a také se můžeme dovolávat intuice na podpoření takového tvrzení. Avšak je zcela nejasné, která reálná kritéria mohou být aplikována, aby se takovéto tvrzení stalo skutečnou ověřitelnou tezí. Jakékoliv ustanovení sémantického výkladu jako jediného základu imitujícího skutečnost, je tudíž v jistém smyslu bojem s neviditelným nepřítelem. Nejenže je těžké ho zasáhnout, ale také, a to je horší, není jasné, co se počítá jako vítězství a co jako porážka.

Source text - English IN the summer of 1874 I was in Liverpool, whither
I had gone on business for the mercantile house of
Bronson & Jarrett, New York. I am William Jarrett;
my partner was Zenas Bronson. The firm failed last
year, and unable to endure the fall from affluence to
poverty he died.
Having finished my business, and feeling the
lassitude and exhaustion incident to its dispatch, I felt
that a protracted sea voyage would be both
agreeable and beneficial, so instead of embarking for my
return on one of the many fine passenger steamers
I booked for New York on the sailing vessel
Morrow, upon which I had shipped a large and valuable
invoice of the goods I had bought. The Morrow was
an English ship with, of course, but little
accommodation for passengers, of whom there were only
myself, a young woman and her servant, who was
a middle-aged Negress. I thought it singular that a
travelling English girl should be so attended, but
she afterward explained to me that the woman had
been left with her family by a man and his wife
from South Carolina, both of whom had died on
the same day at the house of the young lady's father
in Devonshire--a circumstance in itself sufficiently
uncommon to remain rather distinctly in my
memory, even had it not afterward transpired in
conversation with the young lady that the name of the
man was William Jarrett, the same as my own. I
knew that a branch of my family had settled in
South Carolina, but of them and their history I was
ignorant.
The Morrow sailed from the mouth of the Mersey
on the 15th of June, and for several weeks we had
fair breezes and unclouded skies. The skipper, an
admirable seaman but nothing more, favoured us
with very little of his society, except at his table; and
the young woman, Miss Janette Harford, and I
became very well acquainted. We were, in truth, nearly
always together, and being of an introspective turn
of mind I often endeavoured to analyse and define
the novel feeling with which she inspired me--a
secret, subtle, but powerful attraction which
constantly impelled me to seek her; but the attempt was
hopeless. I could only be sure that at least it was
not love. Having assured myself of this and being
certain that she was quite as whole-hearted, I
ventured one evening (I remember it was on the 3rd
of July) as we sat on deck to ask her, laughingly,
if she could assist me to resolve my psychological
doubt.
For a moment she was silent, with averted face,
and I began to fear I had been extremely rude and
indelicate; then she fixed her eyes gravely on my
own. In an instant my mind was dominated by as
strange a fancy as ever entered human
consciousness It seemed as if she were looking at me, not
with, but through, those eyes--from an
immeasurable distance behind them--and that a number
of other persons, men, women and children, upon
whose faces I caught strangely familiar evanescent
expressions, clustered about her, struggling with
gentle eagerness to look at me through the same orbs.
Ship, ocean, sky - all had vanished. I was conscious
of nothing but the figures in this extraordinary and
fantastic scene. Then all at once darkness fell upon
me, and anon from out of it, as to one who grows
accustomed by degrees to a dimmer light, my former
surroundings of deck and mast and cordage slowly
resolved themselves. Miss Harford had closed her
eyes and was leaning back in her chair, apparently
asleep.
Translation - Czech V létě roku 1874 jsem byl v Liverpoolu, kam jsem se vydal za obchodem pro kupeckou firmu Bronson & Jarrett se sídlem v New Yorku. Jmenuji se William Jarrett a mým společníkem byl Zenas Bronson. Společnost minulý rok zkrachovala a můj partner následně zemřel, protože nemohl snést pád z vrcholu blahobytu do bídy.
Po vyřízení mých záležitostí mě provázely pocity malátnosti a vyčerpání spojené s jejich vybavením, a cítil jsem, že prodloužené cestování po moři by bylo stejně tak příjemné, jako prospěšné. Inu, místo abych se při svém návratu nalodil na jeden z četných nóbl osobních parníků, rezervoval jsem si cestu do New Yorku na plachetnici Morrow, na které jsem převážel velkou a cennou zásilku nakoupeného zboží. Morrow byla anglickou lodí, kde, jak se se dalo čekat, bylo málo místa pro cestující. Cestovali jsme pouze tři, já a mladá žena se svou služebnou, černoškou středního věku. Zdálo se mi podivné, že by anglická dívka na cestách byla takto doprovázena, ale později mi bylo vysvětleno, že ta žena byla ponechána na starost rodině této mladé dámy po úmrtí muže a ženy z Jižní Karolíny, kteří oba skonali ve stejný den v domě jejího otce v hrabství Devonshire. Tato okolnost byla sama o sobě dostatečně nezvyklá, aby se mi vryla spíše výrazně do paměti, i kdyby poté, během konverzace s touto mladou dámou, nevyšlo najevo, že onen muž se jmenoval William Jarrett, a byl tedy mým jmenovcem. Byl jsem si vědom toho, že jedna větev mé rodiny se usídlila v Jižní Karolíně, ale nebylo mi známo nic o jejich minulosti.
Morrow vyplula z ústí řeky Mersey 15. června a řadu týdnů nás provázel příznivý vítr a obloha bez mráčku. Kapitán lodi, obdivuhodný námořník, ale nic více, nám dopřával své společnosti zřídkakdy, pouze při stolování u jeho stolu. Ta mladá žena, slečna Janette Harfordová, a já jsme se velmi dobře seznámili. Byli jsme, popravdě řečeno, spolu téměř vždy. Díky mému introspektivnímu stavu mysli jsem se často snažil rozebírat a definovat ten nový pocit, který ve mně vzbuzovala, tu skrytou, něžnou, ale silnou přitažlivost, která mě neustále nutila ji vyhledávat, ale mé snažení bylo beznadějné. Mohl jsem si být jist akorát tím, že to alespoň nebyla láska. Sa přesvědčen a jist si tím, že ona byla stejně tak seriózní, odvážil jsem se jednoho večera (pamatuji se, že to bylo 3. července), jak jsme tak seděli na palubě, zeptat se jí se smíchem, jestli by mi mohla pomoci rozptýlit mé psychologické pochybnosti.
Chvíli seděla zticha, s odvrácenou tváří, a já se začal bát, že jsem byl nesmírně drzý a netaktní, a pak upřela své oči vážně do mých. V okamžiku byla má mysl ovládnuta tou neobyčejnou představivostí, která kdy vstoupila do lidského vědomí. Zdálo se mi, že se na mě dívala ne očima, ale skrze ty oči, z nezměrné dálky v nich ukryté. A množství dalších lidí, mužů, žen a dětí, v jejichž tvářích jsem zachytil podivně známý pomíjivý výraz, se shromáždilo kolem ní a zápasilo s jemnou dychtivostí podívat se na mě skrze ty samé zornice. Loď, oceán, nebe – vše zmizelo. Nebyl jsem si vědom ničeho, krom těch postav v tom mimořádném a neskutečném výjevu. Poté jsem najednou upadl do tmy a za chvíli se z této, jako postupné přivykání slabšímu světlu, začalo pomalu vynořovat mé dřívejší okolí paluby, stěžně a lanoví. Slečna Harfordová měla zavřené oči a byla pohodlně opřena ve své židli, zjevně spící.
