DSM gaat de komende jaren fors inzetten op innovatie en het ontwikkelen van nieuwe producten. Het ligt voor de hand dat daarvoor flink wordt ingezet op de researchafdelingen in Geleen, Delft en Zwitserland.

Dat zei de financiële man van het chemieconcern, H. van Dalen, gisteren na de presentatie van de halfjaarcijfers. De resultaten van DSM waren sinds lange tijd niet zo rooskleurig. De winst over het eerste halfjaar steeg met 47procent tegenover het eerste half jaar van 2004. In euro's liep de halfjaarwinst op tot 264 miljoen. De omzet steeg minder hard, met 6 procent tot 4,1 miljard euro. Dat er ondanks die relatief kleine stijging van de omzet veel meer winst gemaakt is, komt onder meer door de reorganisaties en verbeteringen die zijn doorgevoerd, zei Van Dalen.

De Limburgse bedrijven van DSM droegen flink bij aan de winst. Een echte 'ster' is de Dyneemafabriek in Heerlen. DSM heeft deze ijzersterke vezel enkele jaren geleden ontwikkeld. Naast gebruik ervan in kogelwerende vesten worden steeds nieuwe toepassingen bedacht en op de markt gebracht, waar flink aan wordt verdiend. DSM verwacht veel van Dyneema als hechtdraad in de medische wereld.

That was the word yesterday from the chemical concern’s finance man H. van Dalen, presenting its half-yearly figures. DSM’s results are brighter than they have been for a long time. Profits for the first six months of this year were 47 per cent higher than in the first half of 2004. In euros, first-half profits this year totalled 264 million. Turnover climbed more slowly, rising by 6 per cent to 4.1 billion euro. Among the reasons why profits grew so fast, despite the relatively small rise in turnover, are the reorganisations and improvements brought in by the firm, Van Dalen said.

DSM’s Limburg sites made a big contribution to those profits, with “star” status going to the Dyneema plant in Heerlen. Dyneema is a super-tough fibre developed by DSM a few years ago. It is used in bullet-proof jackets, and further applications are constantly being devised and brought to market. It has become a big earner. DSM has high hopes of Dyneema as a suture for medical use.

Près de 5,5 millions de Français entre 20 et 59 ans s’estiment en situation de handicap, or moins de la moitié sont reconnus comme tels. A la fin de l’année 2003, la population active handicapée comprenait 888 000 personnes, dont 643 000 occupaient un travail tandis que 245 000 cherchaient un emploi. Le taux d’activité de 45 pour cent, contre 70 pour cent pour la population totale reste particulièrement faible. Parmi les personnes occupant un emploi, 500 000 sont salariées en milieu ordinaire (150 000 dans la fonction publique et 350 000 dans le privé), 120 000 personnes travaillent en milieu protégé et 23 000 sont indépendantes. Parmi les demandeurs d’emploi, 27 pour cent ont plus de 50 ans (contre 15 pour cent pour la population totale), 45 pour cent ont un niveau de qualification de manœuvre, ouvrier spécialisé ou d’employé non qualifié (23 pour cent pour le total des actifs français) et 41 pour cent sont au chômage depuis plus d’un an (30 pour cent pour la population totale).

Seules 46 pour cent des entreprises remplissaient les obligations de 6 pour cent d’embauche, en 2003. En revanche, 87 pour cent des employeurs se déclarent satisfaits d’avoir embauché un travailleur handicapé, un taux qui passe à 97 pour cent dans les entreprises de plus de 250 salariés. Les salariés handicapés sont également bien perçus par leurs collègues, les trois quarts considérant leur présence comme un facteur positif pour leur entreprise.

Employees with disabilities also have the approval of their fellow workers, three-quarters of whom see their presence as a positive factor in their workplace.

Zielsetzung der Arbeit ist die Herleitung von Notwendigkeit und möglicher Ausgestaltung einer wirtschaftspolitischen Koordinierung innerhalb der Euro-Zone gewesen. Im Unterschied zu dem bisherigen Forschungsstrang im Bereich der wirtschaftspolitischen Koordinierung versucht sich diese Arbeit der Kardinalkritik der Unsicherheit über das zugrundeliegende Wirtschaftsmodell zu entziehen. Die bisherigen Forschungsarbeiten lassen überwiegend eine Grundannahme über die Funktionsbeziehungen zwischen Geld-, Fiskal- und Lohnpolitik erkennen und machen ihre Ergebnisse damit in erheblichem Umfang davon abhängig, ob die unterstellte Funktionsbeziehung zwischen den einzelnen Politikbereichen zutreffend ist. Diese Arbeit nähert sich dem Thema eher aus institutionenökonomischer und empirischer Sicht und versucht so, die Entstehung wirtschaftspolitischer Koordinierung und die Anreize zu analysieren, die aus bestehenden oder möglichen Koordinierungsformen resultieren. In diesem Zusammenhang werden die unterschiedlichen Koordinierungsansätze von monetaristischen und keynesianischen Sichtweisen gegenübergestellt und hinsichtlich der Auswirkungen ihres institutionellen Arrangements bewertet.

This study sets out to demonstrate the necessity, and suggest the possible form, of economic policy coordination within the eurozone. Unlike the previous research strand on economic policy coordination, it seeks to allay the key criticism relating to uncertainty about the underlying economic model. Up to now, the research has mostly borne the traces of a basic assumption about the functional relationships between monetary, fiscal and wage policies. Its outcomes have thus been largely dependent on whether this supposed functional relationship between the individual policy fields does indeed apply. The present study, on the other hand, approaches the subject rather from a perspective of institutional economics and empiricism. Thus, it attempts to analyze the genesis of economic policy coordination as well as the incentives created by existing or possible forms of coordination. In this context, the differing coordination approaches fostered by monetarism and Keynesianism are contrasted and the impacts of their institutional provisions are assessed.

Multitud de personas de escasos recursos salen diariamente a las calles a vender cualquier cosa, o a realizar los más diversos oficios por poco dinero para sobrevivir en una situación de largo desempleo, a falta de oportunidades de empleo productivo. También muchas personas permanecen en el sector informal por el mal recuerdo del empleo en una empresa, mal pagado, rutinario y sin posibilidades de carrera, y por la sensación de libertad que les brinda, a pesar de sus riesgos. El sector informal es, en este sentido, el resultado de la falta de empleos productivos y además una expresión de fracaso de la actividad empresarial que no alcanza a ofrecer empleos dignos y atractivos.
El sector informal es ya en muchos casos como una fatalidad y las medidas que se adoptan para reducirlo o mejorar la condición de quienes lo integran parecieran no estar destinadas en realidad a que desaparezca.

Huge numbers of under-resourced people head out into the streets every day to sell something or other, or to carry out all sorts of tasks for very little pay, as a way of surviving in a situation of widespread unemployment and few productive job openings. Another reason why many people stay in the informal sector is that they have bad memories of poorly paid, monotonous jobs in firms that did not hold out any career prospects. Whereas informal work gives them a feeling of freedom, despite the risks. In that sense, the informal sector results from a lack of productive employment but also reflects a failure of entrepreneurial activity, which is not managing to offer decent, attractive jobs.
So in many cases, the informal sector was bound to happen, and in reality the measures taken to shrink it, or improve the conditions of those working in it, do not seem likely to make it disappear.
